Charlie Spring was excited. It was his first Hanukka with a boyfriend, and he was eager to show Nick how fantastic the holiday was. Nick was excited to try to bake sufganiyot with Charlie. His boyfriend loved baking and was good at it.
Charlie heard the doorbell ring and knew it was Nick.
Charlie opens the door and sees Nick.
“Nick, hi,” Charlie said and went in for a kiss.
“Hi, Char,” Nick said.
“Ready to get making sufganiyot?” Charlie asked.
“Yeah, I’m excited. I love trying new things,” Nick said.
Charlie leads Nick to the kitchen and the two of them start making the sufganiyot.
“I think we should have Nutella filling,” Charlie says.
“My favourite,” Nick said.
Charlie shows Nick the recipe, and the two of them start working on making the sufganiyot.
Charlie’s parents will be home when it is time to light the first candle tonight. Tori is at Michael's house, and Olly is at a friend’s and will return when they light the candles.
They start frying the sufganiyot, and it smells fantastic. Charlie takes out the powdered sugar and the Nutella so Nick can fill the sufganiyot.
When they are all done, Nick takes a picture of them with the sufganiyot, and they look happily at it.
“This looks amazing, and we finished just on time. Your parents will be home any moment,” Nick said.
Charlie goes on his tiptoes, puts his arms around Nick’s neck, and kisses him. Nick leans down into the kiss and happily kisses Charlie back. Kissing Charlie is one of Nick’s favourite things to do. They get lost in the kissing until they hear the door open and Olly running towards them. They pull apart, and Nick feels Olly collide with him.
“Sufganiyot is my favourite. Did you make them, Nick?” Olly asked.
“Hey, I helped,” Charlie said.
Olly goes over to Charlie and hugs him.
“I love you, Charlie,” Olly said.
They hear Tori come in with Michael, and Julio and Jane set up the candles to light them.
“Let’s light the candles,” Julio says.
Olly runs to the living room to set up candles by the window and excitedly stands by his father and mother.
Charlie takes Nick’s hand, and they walk hand in hand to the living room. Charlie leads Nick to his Hanukiya, and they stand by it.
They light the candles and sing the songs. Olly loves the lights and the songs.
“Olly, I have something for you,” Nick says, leaning down to Olly’s height.
He takes out a packet of chocolate coins.
“I thought we could use them when we play with the dreidel,” Nick says.
“I’ll win. I’m the best at dreidel,” Olly said. “When do we get the sufganiyot?”
“After dinner,” Charlie says.
The Springs Nick and Michael sit at the table and eat their meal. After that, they bring out the sufganiyot, and they eat them.
“Yummy, these are so good,” Olly said. “I’m so happy I have you as an older brother now, Nick.”
“I’m happy that you are enjoying them. I had fun making them. It's nice being part of a new cultural experience,” Nick said.
Charlie leans his head on Nick’s shoulder and smiles happily. It was nice having a boyfriend and a boyfriend who enjoys taking part in his experiences. Charlie felt loved and knew he found a good one in Nick. He wanted to spend many Hanukkas with Nick. They can spend every holiday together for the rest of their lives.
“I love you,” Charlie whispers in Nick’s ear.
“I love you too,” Nick whispers back.
Charlie puts his head back on Nick’s shoulder and sighs contentedly. This Hanukka is off to a good start.
