Chapter 1: let down your guard

Chapter Text

Damian Puig was not a man who acted on his whims.

So when he was walking Miss Estrella home, since it was getting dark, he did not go further than necessary. He kept the talk carefully friendly, because that’s what this was. A friendly date. He must not get too attached. He was doing this only to get information.

(And if he was delighted that she considered it a date, well, then, he wouldn’t admit it.)

The conversation was still very lively, and was cut off far too soon for his liking once they reached her house. He smiled politely at Miss Estrella, who was trying - and failing - to figure out how to bid him goodbye without making the air between them awkward.

He tilted his head slightly, listening to her stammer. There was something red in her hair. Maybe it was a… string or something?

“Miss Estrella,” He pointed at her hair, “You have something…”

“Huh?” She flinched. “Eh?! Where?!

Panicking, she flailed around, searching for the offender on her shoulder and backpack.

“Is it a bug? Don’t tell me it’s a ketchup stain!” Then, muttering to herself, “This is so embarrassing!”

In a valiant effort to quell her panic, he offered to get it for her. Reaching out, his hand brushed the hair behind her ear and oh fuck this is where it all went off-track.

On a deeper level he knew he shouldn’t do this. He was sure a voice in his brain was screaming at him to stop, don’t go further than necessary, don’t get too attached, you’ll ruin her life anyway, but in that moment, he found that he simply didn’t care. Honestly, he couldn’t hear it over the other voice which was screaming that oh my god she looks so pretty I want to kiss her right now.

This was rather uncharacteristic of him. That being said, could you blame him?

Was he supposed to look at her shining golden eyes, her slightly parted lips, her dark hair illuminated by the dim purple lights, and resist trying to kiss her? Her skin feels so soft, he mused, and slightly ran his thumb over her cheek.

“Miss Estrella…” He began, “Can I -”

Leave it to his phone to ruin a perfectly romantic moment.

They jumped apart. Damian saw her face turn beet red, and felt his own face burning up. What had he been thinking?

“W-Woah, sorry, it's from the district attorney's,” He stammered lamely, “Must be urgent if they're calling this late!”

“That's okay!” She exclaimed, her voice going an octave higher, “I should really get going now!”

“Good night Detective Puig!" She called over her shoulder, grinning.

He felt a smile form on his face.

“Good night, Miss Estrella.”

Above him, the stars shone dully, each one galaxies apart.

See, I need you and baby I need to

Let down my guard and give you my scars
