You drew stars around my scars
He cruised through the dimly lit streets, the low hum of the patrol car's engine a familiar companion. As he rounded a corner, his radio crackled to life, the dispatcher's voice breaking the silence.
"Jeon, where are you at?"
"Just finishing my rounds, heading back in. Why, what's up?" Jungkook replied, glancing at the city lights outside his car window.
"Report of potential vandalism on Insadong Avenue. Can you check it out before calling it a night?”
"10-4, I'm nearby,” Jungkook confirmed, “I'll swing by and see what's going on."
Just as he pulled up to the school's entrance, he spotted a familiar figure standing on top of a car, holding paint cans. He sighed, recognizing the troublemaker even before stepping out of the patrol car.
"Kim Taehyung," he called out.
Taehyung, caught mid-spray, turned to face Jungkook, a careless grin spreading on his face. "Hey, Officer J. Just adding a bit of color, you know?"
Jungkook shook his head, more disappointed than surprised. "You've got a strange way of expressing yourself, Kim. Get down from there."
Taehyung, still on top of the car, flashed him another grin.
"Oh, come on, Officer J! I can't just abandon my masterpiece. It's not done—"
Jungkook sighed, resisting a laugh. "This isn't the Louvre, Taehyung. Get down."
"I don't know, Officer. It's pretty high up here. Are you sure you can catch me?"
Jungkook, trying to maintain his professional manners, extended a hand. "Cut the act, Kim. I'm not in the mood for games." As he helped him down by the waist, he felt the change in Taehyung's weight from the last time they had done this. A nagging worry crept into his mind. It looked like Taehyung was losing too much weight.
“Are you okay?” He asked, before letting go of Taehyung's waist.
"Aw, Officer J, didn't know you cared so much about my well-being. Maybe you're not as tough as you look."
Jungkook ignored him but he couldn't resist casting a glance at the graffiti sprawled across the school wall. "Alright, let's see what you've done." The bold lines and play of shadows created a night sky. Splashes of color formed stars. He fought against the urge, yet a hint of admiration welled up inside him.
However, he maintained a straight face.
Taehyung, who was clearly enjoying himself, gestured proudly toward the wall. "Pretty cool, huh? I call it 'The midnigh—'"
"It's just graffiti, Kim.” Jungkook interrupted, “it's against the law."
Beneath the layer of authority, a small part of him did find Taehyung's work surprisingly impressive. But admitting that to the troublemaker was a line Jungkook wasn't prepared to cross.
He guided Taehyung toward the patrol car, the conversation dying down as they approached the backseat. As Taehyung settled in, Jungkook glanced at him through the rearview mirror. He took in the sight of the familiar troublemaker in the backseat. The pretty boy with messy hair. His eyes shifted to said hair, noting the faded purple strands.
Their eyes locked for a moment.
Jungkook couldn't help but notice the tiredness that was clearly visible in Taehyung's brown eyes. It was as if a glimpse of vulnerability was shining through his usual confident and bold demeanor.
"So, Officer J, are you gonna lecture me again or just enjoy the view?" Taehyung smirked, breaking the silence.
He replied with a serious face, "Save the charm for someone else, Kim."
Their eyes lingered, before Taehyung, stuck his tongue out and broke the spell.
"Oh, come on, Officer. Lighten up a bit," he teased.
Every time they sat in the police car and had a conversation, it was always the same routine. He was already feeling a little annoyed, and responded by rolling his eyes. However, he couldn't help but let a small smile escape from his lips.
The radio suddenly pierced the quiet of the patrol car, demanding his attention. "Unit 7, report on the situation."
"Situation handled."
With the radio now silent, he turned around in his seat, studying the other in the dim light. The playful look in Taehyung's eyes had dulled.
"Kim," he began, his tone more serious. "Do you need to sleep at the station again?"
Taehyung, now looking out of the window, nodded. Without saying anything more, Jungkook started the car and drove through the empty streets in the direction of the police station, the gentle hum of the engine serving as a guide.
He focused on the road, while Taehyung, gazing out of the window, seemed lost in his own thoughts.
The patrol car pulled up to the police station, the engine's hum diminishing as Jungkook parked. Without a word, he stepped out, his boots echoing in the quiet station lobby. He headed directly to a closet, familiar with the routine that unfolded after nights like these.
He reached into the closet and pulled out a worn blanket and a spare pillow. The soft rustle of fabric filled the air as he got ready for what had become a routine in dealing with Taehyung's late-night antics.
Moving through the station, Jungkook found him at his usual spot, occupying one of the chairs in the lobby. The dim light highlighted the tired lines on his face as he looked up, acknowledging Jungkook's presence.
He handed the blanket and pillow to Taehyung, who accepted them with a tired nod. Instead of returning to his usual post, Jungkook decided to sit down beside him.
"You know, we can't keep doing this, Taehyung."
A scared look crossed the other's face as he responded, "Please don't send me home, Officer Jeon. I can't go back there."
Jungkook let out a frustrated groan. "I can't keep turning a blind eye to this."
Taehyung sighed, his shoulders slumping. "You don't understand.”
Jungkook noticed the fresh bruises on his arms. He felt a surge of protective anger but he kept his voice steady. "You don't have to go back home if you don't want to." The room fell into a heavy silence, broken only by the distant hum of the station. He placed a hand on Taehyung's shoulder, "I won't send you back if you're not safe there. We'll figure this out together."
As Taehyung looked at him with those soft eyes that revealed how defenseless he felt, an overwhelming sense of protectiveness overcame Jungkook, like a tsunami smashing on the shore of his consciousness, ordering him to shield Taehyung from any harm that might come his way.
He placed his jacket over Taehyung's shoulders to keep him warm. Then, he walked towards the coffee machine to grab him a warm drink. As he got closer to it, he accidentally bumped into his colleague and friend.
"Jeon! What's got you back at the station at this ungodly hour?" Hoseok asked.
Jungkook nodded toward Taehyung. "Just dealing with Kim again. You know how it goes."
Hoseok raised an understanding eyebrow. "Yeah, the usual. So, no special plans for tonight?"
Confused, Jungkook furrowed his brow. "Special plans? No, just the usual routine."
Hoseok smirked, glancing past Jungkook at the calendar on the wall. "You sure about that, buddy?"
Following his friend's gaze, Jungkook spotted a heart-shaped reminder around the date.
Valentine's Day.
Something clicked in his mind, and he had to laugh. "Valentine's Day, huh? I forgot all about it. No plans, just another night on duty," he replied, sounding a little amused.
Hoseok clapped him on the shoulder. "Well, at least you've got the station as your Valentine tonight. Take care, Kook."
Taehyung glanced up at him with a faint smile as Jungkook returned with a mug of hot chocolate. As Taehyung accepted the cup from his outstretched hand, Jungkook couldn't help but notice the stick-and-poke star on his hand.
"Here you go, Starboy," he said, trying to sound friendly.
Taehyung, looking up at him, chuckled. "Starboy, huh?"
He kept a straight face but inside, a grin tugged at the corners of his lips, “You always have stars with you, whether they are on your hand or drawn on your cheeks.”
Taehyung shook his head, the playful glint returning to his eyes. "Stars just follow me, Officer J. What can I say?"
In the quiet lobby, Jungkook felt a comforting familiarity as he watched Taehyung hold the mug of hot chocolate.
Then he heard a low rumble. It was Taehyung's stomach demanding attention. He raised an eyebrow, looking at him concerned.
"When was the last time you ate?" He asked, noting the casual shrug Taehyung offered in response.
Jungkook sighed, recognizing the routine.
"Alright, Starboy, I'll find you something to eat. Don't want you causing a commotion with those stomach protests."
Taehyung grinned, and Jungkook got up, making his way to the station's canteen.
The fluorescent lights flickered overhead as he scanned the options available. But the sight that met him was less than promising. The canteen was closed for the day, and the sandwiches left were far from appetizing.
He sighed.
He didn't want to settle for a subpar meal from the vending machine, and candy wasn't going to cut it. Thinking of Taehyung, he thought about the possibility of taking him to a fast-food place still open at this hour.
As he returned to Taehyung, he found the troublemaker in a good mood, cracking a joke. "Took you long enough, Officer J. Did you forget about me?"
Jungkook shook his head but as he glanced at Taehyung, a realization hit him. In the dim light, the other seemed smaller, wrapped up in his oversized police jacket. Jungkook made up his mind and decided. "Change of plans, Starboy. We're not settling for these sorry excuses for sandwiches. How about I take you somewhere with real food?"
Taehyung's eyes lit up at the suggestion, and Jungkook, considering the options, thought about the empty apartment waiting for him. As he looked at Taehyung, a decision formed. "Actually, how about you come home with me for the night? I've got some decent food there."
Taehyung practically jumped up, a spark of excitement lighting up his eyes.
Jungkook couldn't help but find the reaction a bit adorable and, without thinking, a faint smile tugged at the corner of his lips.
The other, catching the smile, teased, "Oh, Officer J, did you just crack a smile? Never thought I'd see the day."
Rolling his eyes, Jungkook retorted, "Don't get too excited, Starboy. This is a one time thing."
As he packed his things, Taehyung trailed closely behind, like a lost puppy. "So, Officer J, is your apartment as spacious as your patrol car?" He grinned, making a show of inspecting Jungkook's belongings.
Jungkook struggled to maintain his serious expression. "You'll find out soon enough."
They strolled outdoors, and Taehyung, who didn't seem to care about the late hour, kept bouncing with enthusiasm. Not only was his antics entertaining to Jungkook, but he also felt a comforting warmth from the unexpected company.
Taehyung immediately began scanning the parking lot for a car. Jungkook, with a shake of his head, started walking toward the sleek motorcycle parked nearby.
He saw Taehyung's eyes widen in surprise, and he couldn't resist a chuckle. "What's the matter, Starboy? Were you expecting a police car?"
Taehyung, grinning, shot back, "I was thinking more along the lines of a fancy car.”
"Sorry to disappoint, but we're riding this tonight."
As Taehyung carefully eyed the motorcycle, a smirk spread across his face. "Well, Officer J, I guess I'll have to hold onto you tightly, then."
Jungkook swung a leg over the motorcycle, settling into the seat. He reached for a helmet and handed it to Taehyung, who eyed it skeptically.
"Put it on, starboy. Safety first," he instructed.
Taehyung, complying with a dramatic sigh, secured the helmet. As he got on the bike and wrapped his arms tightly around Jungkook, the grip almost too firm, he couldn't help but joke, "Easy there, Taehyung. I need to breathe, you know."
Taehyung chuckled, his voice muffled by the helmet. "Breathing is overrated, Officer J."
Jungkook started the engine, the motorcycle purring to life.
"And where's your helmet?!" Taehyung shouted over the engine's hum.
Jungkook glanced at him with a smirk. "I only have one. You should feel honored. I never let anyone ride with me."
Taehyung laughed. "Look at you, breaking your own rules. Doing something wild for once."
Rolling his eyes, Jungkook responded, "You better be honored, then."
As they sped through the night, the wind whipping around them, Taehyung's grip slowly eased. He laid his head on Jungkook's back, and Jungkook heard a tiny, barely audible thank you.
The city lights blurred as he maneuvered through the streets.
As the motorcycle rolled to a stop in front of his apartment, he turned to Taehyung. "You okay back there?"
"That was awesome, Officer J! Can we do it again?" the other practically yelled.
Jungkook chuckled, pleased to hear his excitement. "As much as I'd love to, you need some food first. Come on, Starboy, let go of me."
Taehyung released his grip but clearly couldn't resist asking, "Can't we ride some more after? It's like flying through the city!"
Although Jungkook secretly wanted to do it, he shook his head. "Not tonight. Food first. I don't want you passing out on my watch."
As they entered his apartment building, he led the way up the stairs. "I live at the top," he explained, "No elevator, so we'll have to climb."
Taehyung waved it off with a casual, "No worries. I can handle it."
But as they made their way up the stairs, Taehyung casually mentioned, "You know, Officer J, if I get tired, you could always give me a piggyback ride. I won't tell anyone."
Instead of saying anything, Jungkook just rolled his eyes.
"Come on, it's a great opportunity for some team building exercises," Taehyung continued, a playful glint in his eyes.
Jungkook let out a half-amused sigh, pretending not to entertain the idea. However, deep down, he knew that if Taehyung were to genuinely ask for a piggyback ride, he would find it incredibly hard to say no.
As they finally reached the top, he fumbled for his keys and unlocked the door. He flipped on the lights, revealing a small, straightforward two-bedroom apartment. He tossed his bag on the floor and gestured for Taehyung to enter first.
Without hesitation, the other slipped off his shoes and jumped right into checking out Jungkook's living room. The simplicity of his apartment seemed so contrast with Taehyung's excitement.
Jungkook watched as he inspected every nook and cranny. Curiosity lighting up his face.
"You act like you've never seen an apartment before," Jungkook said, slightly amused.
Taehyung, poking around, replied, "This is like a whole new world for me. Your place is practically a mansion compared to where I crash."
An uncomfortable knot was tightening in Jungkook's stomach. "It's just a simple place. Make yourself at home, but don't break anything."
As Taehyung continued his exploration, Jungkook couldn't help but notice how happy the troublemaker seemed to be. It was a glimpse into a side of Taehyung that he hadn't expected.
After letting him freely explore his apartment, Jungkook slipped into his room for a quick shower. The calming sound of water running filled the room, before he came out of the bathroom now wearing black sweatpants and a hoodie. He liked to call it his home uniform.
The police uniform had been replaced, at least for the night.
When he came back into the living room, Taehyung was sitting on the floor in front of the TV, looking like he was lost in his own thoughts. After a brief moment of silence, Jungkook cleared his throat, breaking the stillness. "Found something interesting?" He asked as he took a seat nearby.
Taehyung looked up, grinning. "Your DVD collection is a gold mine, Officer J. Movie night?"
"Sure, why not? Pick something you like."
Suddenly, Taehyung glanced over his shoulder at him. Jungkook raised an eyebrow, which made the other break into a warm smile.
"What's on your mind?" Jungkook asked, pretending not to care even though he was genuinely quite interested.
"I was just thinking, Officer J, you couldn't possibly look any more handsome than you do in that uniform of yours." He then added, "But now I must admit, you look just as good in sweatpants."
The compliment caught Jungkook off guard, but he pretended not to hear it.
Clearing his throat, he walked over to where Taehyung was sitting. He couldn't help but notice how different the troublemaker's edgy style was from his own. Taehyung was still wearing his police jacket over a thin sweatshirt and jeans with intentional or unintentional rips.
With a casual tone, he suggested, "Want to borrow something more comfortable?"
Taehyung looked a little surprised by the offer, like he wasn't used to being offered things like that, but he quickly nodded. "Sure, thanks."
Jungkook grabbed a towel and gestured toward the bathroom in his bedroom. "You can take a shower. I'll find you something to wear."
While Taehyung disappeared into the bathroom, Jungkook went through his wardrobe, settling on a pair of plain sweatpants and a gray hoodie.
He neatly laid them out on the bed, realizing the unusualness of the situation.
It wasn't every day that someone would unexpectedly join him in his isolated place.
As he waited impatiently in the living room, the sound of the door opening caught his attention. Turning around on the couch, he saw Taehyung walking out, now dressed in his oversized sweatpants and hoodie. The clothes hung loosely on him, and his wet hair hinted at the recent shower.
The big smile on Taehyung's face was captivating, and for a moment, Jungkook couldn't help but be struck by how different the troublemaker looked.
Taehyung, seemingly aware of Jungkook's gaze, teased "Officer J, if you keep looking at me like that, I might get used to wearing your clothes."
Jungkook felt his cheeks heat up slightly, and he cleared his throat, trying to hide the fact that he was blushing. "Just find something you want to watch. I'll see what I can rustle up in the kitchen."
As he headed to the kitchen, he couldn't shake the image of Taehyung in his oversized clothes and the unexpected transformation from a troublemaker to someone almost unrecognizably adorable.
Taking a look around his kitchen, he realized that his food options were rather limited.
He knew he didn't have enough to whip up a proper meal. Glancing at the refrigerator, he ruled out offering Taehyung pizza leftovers as a less-than-ideal choice. He searched through the cabinets again and he felt a twinge of embarrassment. The unexpected guest in his home really highlighted the simplicity of his bachelor lifestyle.
So he decided to opt for a different plan.
He would head to the nearest fast-food restaurant to buy something for their makeshift dinner. As he walked into the living room to inform Taehyung of the plan, he was met with an unexpected sight.
There stood Taehyung, in front of his shelf with pictures. A photograph clutched in his hand, he seemed lost in thought.
Jungkook paused for a second.
And then he approached him curious to know what had caught his eye. Peering at the photograph in Taehyung's hand, he stepped closer to him, only to realize that it was the picture of himself taken during his time in the military. He stood tall and proud in his uniform, a slightly younger version of himself with a stern expression.
This was the first photo he had ever taken.
Taehyung, without looking up, suddenly broke the silence with a question that hung heavy in the room, "How long have you been a police officer?"
He hesitated for a moment before answering, "About a year." The weight of the past year seemed to settle on his shoulders as he spoke.
"And how long were you in the military?"
"Two years," Jungkook replied, as memories of his time in the army came back to him.
Taehyung finally looked up at him, his eyes carrying a hint of sadness. "You always had everything figured out, didn't you? Must be nice, knowing what you want to do."
Jungkook was surprised by his sudden comment, but it brought a smile to his face and he couldn't help but let out a little chuckle.
Taehyung was clearly taken aback by the unexpected laughter.
"I didn't have anything figured out," Jungkook admitted, shaking his head.
"Come on, Officer J, you obviously have things figured out." Taehyung argued, rolling his eyes.
Jungkook raised an eyebrow, amused by the other's persistence.
"So, how old are you, anyway?" he continued.
"Twenty-two," Jungkook replied.
Taehyung threw his hands in the air dramatically. "See? You're only three years older than me, and you've already got your shit together."
"It's complicated, Taehyung," he said, shaking his head in response to his comments. That didn't stop the troublemaker, though, as he started rambling, using the nickname "Officer J" repeatedly.
Finally, unable to bear it anymore, Jungkook interrupted, "You know, my first name isn't 'Officer.' right? It's Jungkook."
The sudden revelation brought Taehyung to a halt. He blinked, genuinely surprised. "Jungkook?" he echoed. "Officer J is Jungkook?" He tested out the new information. "Jeon... Jungkook... Officer J is Jungkook." The repetition of his first name, especially when uttered by Taehyung, had an unexpectedly pleasant ring to it.
"Just so you know, it seems like I don’t have much to offer." Jungkook admitted with a shrug, "So I'm going to grab us some food. Okay?”
Taehyung could barely hide his excitement as he quickly nodded. "Finally, some food. Officer J—Jungkook, you're my hero."
He rolled his eyes but couldn't suppress a small smile.
"Any particular cravings? What do you want to eat?"
The other shrugged nonchalantly. "Anything, really. I'm not picky."
Knowing there must be something Taehyung really wanted, Jungkook insisted, "Come on, there's got to be something you're in the mood for. What's your favorite?"
After a moment of hesitation, the other admitted with a grin, "Okay, fine. I really like fries. Anything with fries is good."
He nodded, satisfied with the answer. "Got it. Fries it is, then. I'll be back soon."
He prepared to head out when Taehyung suddenly stopped him at the doorway. "Hey, Jungkook, got any paper and crayons or something?"
He was genuinely confused. "Why in the world would you need paper and crayons?"
Taehyung flashed him a grin. "I'll get bored while you're out. Gotta keep myself entertained somehow."
Sighing, Jungkook gave in, "Fine, wait here." He fetched some paper and crayons for Taehyung, "Make yourself at home, Picasso," he teased, handing over the supplies before finally heading out to get them some much-needed food.
Fortunately, a McDonald's was just a few blocks away from his apartment. He placed an order for a little bit of everything, but he made a note to ensure there were plenty of extra fries.
On his way back from McDonald's, he decided to make a quick stop at a convenience store to pick up some snacks. As he strolled through the aisles, grabbing a few additional items, something caught his eye.
It was a calendar on the wall reminding him that it was Valentine's Day.
Again.
The store was adorned with all the typical Valentine's Day decorations, bears with hearts, red balloons, and heart-shaped lollipops. After giving it some thought, he decided to grab a teddy bear and a pack of chocolates.
As he approached the cashier, a warm smile spread across her face. "Someone's going to be really happy," she said, nodding toward the teddy bear.
Jungkook, caught off guard by the comment, awkwardly smiled in response but chose not to say anything. He paid for the items and with the bag in hand, he continued his way back to his place.
Returning to the apartment with the bag of food, he found Taehyung sitting on the couch. Lifting the bag in a teasing manner, he announced, "Dinner is served."
The genuine happiness that lit up Taehyung's face at the sight of the food brought a pleasant feeling to him. It was simple yet comforting, knowing that someone was genuinely excited for his return, even if it was mainly for the food.
He brought the bag to the table in front of the couch, taking a seat beside Taehyung.
Handing over one of the bags along with a soda, they began their dinner. The atmosphere was relaxed, the smell of fries and burgers filling the air.
As they ate, he couldn't help but steal glances at Taehyung. The expression on his face was one of pure happiness as he ate his burger. It was a simple joy that Jungkook found oddly endearing.
As they finished their meal, Taehyung leaned back on the couch, a satisfied look on his face. "Thanks, Officer J," he said with a contented sigh.
Jungkook, happy to see the other so pleased, set his soda on the table. His eyes then fell on the crayons and small pieces of paper cutout nearby.
Curious, he asked, "What did you make?"
Taehyung, blushing slightly, reached under the couch pillow and pulled out a paper heart decorated with pink flowers, green leaves, and yellow butterflies.
Handing it to him, he said, "I made this for you."
Jungkook looked down at it and was truly amazed by how well it was made.
"Do you like it?" Taehyung whispered as Jungkook quietly admired the detailed heart.
His gaze shifted from the paper to Taehyung's shy eyes, and he couldn't help but break into a genuine smile. "Yeah, I do," he replied. "It's really nice. I've never gotten anything as pretty before."
Taehyung's eyes lit up with relief and a touch of pride. "I wasn't sure if it was any good. I mean, I'm not an artist or anything."
Jungkook chuckled softly. "Well, you could've fooled me. It's more than just 'good.' It's, uh, really special."
A subtle warmth settled in the room as Taehyung beamed, his nervousness had clearly been replaced by a growing sense of pride. "I'm glad you like it, Officer J."
He playfully nudged Taehyung's shoulder. "Call me Jungkook. And seriously, thank you for this. It's the best surprise I've had in a while."
While still admiring the heart-shaped masterpiece, he mused aloud, "You know, Taehyung, you should do something with art. You're really good at it."
The other chuckled, brushing off the compliment with disbelief. "Oh, come on, Jungkook, you're just messing with me."
"No, seriously," he insisted. "I've seen all the graffiti art you've been making. It's impressive, even if it's not exactly legal to graffiti people's walls."
Taehyung's eyes widened with a mix of shyness and excitement. "You really think so?"
He nodded. "Yeah, I do. You've got talent, Kim. Maybe find a legal way to use it. You never know where it could take you."
Taehyung's smile faded, and a hint of self-doubt crept into his expression. "People like me don't get out of this kind of life. I couldn't possibly actually make it in art," he admitted.
Jungkook shook his head.
Taehyung had already established himself as a known troublemaker at the police station by the time he was thirteen years old, thanks to his stealing and, most notably, his graffiti. And despite only knowing him for a few months, he had already been involved in bringing Taehyung to the station multiple times.
Despite this, Jungkook saw beyond the surface and the mistakes.
"Taehyung," he said, his tone steady, "you're not defined by your past or anyone's expectations. If you want to pursue art, go for it. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise."
He reached out and took his hand.
As Taehyung looked at him with widened eyes, Jungkook took a moment to collect himself, inhaling deeply before mustering the will to open up.
"You know, life can take unexpected turns," he began, "I escaped a dysfunctional family when I was about fifteen years old. The day I turned seventeen, I joined the military, and spent two years there." Pointing at the framed picture on the shelf that Taehyung had been holding earlier, Jungkook added with a small smile, "See that one? I was seventeen in that picture. Just a kid starting out in the military. That's where I met Namjoon, my friend whose dad is the police chief here."
While glancing at Taehyung, he continued, "After the military, I went to the police academy for almost two years. It wasn't an easy path, but Namjoon's dad helped me get a job here at the station. The point is, that life is full of twists and turns. Don't underestimate what you're capable of, no matter where you come from or what people might say about you."
In a whisper, Taehyung asked, "Was it worth running away?"
Jungkook met his stare. "Yeah," he replied softly. "I'd do it all over again. It was the best thing I did. Never looked back."
Taehyung's voice was sad as he admitted, "I wish I was brave like you."
Jungkook shook his head, placing a hand on his shoulder. "Staying or running away, both are shitty situations. You're brave for just staying sane and strong through it all, and always keeping that smile on your face."
Almost as if to emphasize the point, the other mustered a small smile, and Jungkook returned it with a genuine one of his own.
Taehyung then practically jumped on him, enveloping him in a tight hug.
Surprised by the sudden warmth, Jungkook froze for a second to absorb it. Then, he returned the embrace, wrapping his arms around the younger man and bringing him onto his lap.
Taehyung tightened his hold, and in a soft whisper, Jungkook heard him say, "Thank you." He wasn't entirely sure what Taehyung was thanking him for, but without hesitation, he thought to himself, I'd do anything for him.
They sat in that embrace for a while, and Jungkook sensed that Taehyung would have let it last much longer if he could. He didn't mind, savoring the rare warmth of a hug. It had been a long time since he had allowed someone to get this close.
After a while, he gently pulled back, creating just enough space to look at Taehyung. However, Taehyung had his head buried in his chest.
Jungkook instead shifted his gaze to the table where he had placed the heart-shaped card and remembered the small gifts he had brought for him.
As he tried to disentangle himself from Taehyung's tight embrace, he couldn't help but chuckle at the unexpected strength the other possessed.
Eventually, using his own strength, he managed to free himself, and when he looked down, he saw a pout on Taehyung's face.
"Hang on, I've got something for you," he said, making his way to the entrance where he had left the plastic bag.
The white bear, covered with little red hearts and a heart-shaped nose, looked surprisingly endearing.
He hoped Taehyung would like it.
Hiding it with the chocolate behind his back, he returned to the living room. Taehyung, still seated on the couch, stubbornly kept his pouty face. Jungkook smiled as he teased, "Alright, grumpy. I've got something for you."
He slowly revealed the bear and chocolate, watching for Taehyung's reaction.
The other blinked in surprise at the sight, his eyes then shifting to Jungkook. In a quiet voice, he asked, "Are these for me?"
Jungkook nodded as he settled beside him on the couch. "Happy Valentine's Day."
"Wow... Just a few hours ago, I didn't even know it was Valentine's Day, and now I've got a hot police officer as my date."
Jungkook rolled his eyes at the playful comment, feeling a slight heat in his cheeks again. To deflect, he quickly handed the teddy bear and chocolate to Taehyung.
"Here you go, Mr. Smooth Talker."
Taehyung's immediate embrace of the bear brought a smile to his face, and he couldn't help but notice how much Taehyung seemed to enjoy hugging.
Jungkook suddenly felt a little awkward and scratched his neck. Taehyung had a way of stirring emotions in him that were both unfamiliar and unexpected.
Suddenly, the other jumped up, grabbed a DVD, and showed it to him. "How about that movie night?" he suggested. Jungkook smiled at the idea and agreed, "Sure thing. I'll make us some popcorn."
In the kitchen, Taehyung, still hugging the teddy bear, followed him with a happy giggle. "So, do you even know your way around a kitchen, or are you going to burn the popcorn?"
Jungkook rolled his eyes, pretending to be offended. "Please, I'm a man of many talents. Cooking is just one of them," he responded, reaching for the popcorn and setting it on the stove.
Taehyung chuckled, and then he continued rambling about various topics, from the latest movies to random trivia, and Jungkook found himself enjoying the conversation. However, as Taehyung kept talking, he got distracted, and before he knew it, the unmistakable smell of slightly burnt popcorn wafted through the air.
Taehyung, noticing the smell, burst into laughter. "Is burning popcorn a talent?" he teased.
Jungkook groaned, realizing he might have underestimated the challenge of multitasking.
As they settled on the couch for movie night, Taehyung apparently couldn't resist poking fun at his DVD collection. "Your taste in movies is seriously lacking variety. It's all horror and action."
Jungkook raised an eyebrow, "I enjoy a good adrenaline rush, what can I say?" he replied.
Taehyung then managed to find one of the rare movies in his collection. "A comedy! Maybe there's hope for your movie taste after all," he exclaimed as he popped the DVD into the player.
As the movie went on, Taehyung got quieter, and Jungkook looked at him, worried.
Was he not having fun?
He wondered if he needed to change the movie or if something else was on Taehyung's mind.
"You okay, starboy?" He asked as he gently nudged his shoulder.
Taehyung nodded but he didn't say anything and Jungkook couldn't shake off the feeling that something was wrong. As he looked at the screen, confusion set in. There were no sad scenes playing, yet he noticed a single tear rolling down Taehyung's cheek.
He paused the movie, turning his attention to the other, who remained fixated on the now paused screen. Moving closer, he gently took Taehyung's hands in his and asked again, "What's wrong, Taehyung?"
Taehyung, avoided eye contact as he said, "Well, there goes the movie night mood. Sorry for ruining the moment..."
Despite the attempt at humor, Jungkook could see a genuine sadness in his eyes, and soon tears began streaming down his face.
He tenderly cupped Taehyung’s cheeks in his hands, his thumbs gently sweeping away the tears that streamed down. In the quiet of the moment, he decided not to say anything, allowing Taehyung the space to let out his feelings.
Slowly, he leaned into his touch, and what had started as a simple gesture turned into an embrace.
Another silent minute passed, and Taehyung's head landed on his shoulder.
Jungkook gently ran a comforting hand up and down his back.
In a vulnerable tone, Taehyung sighed, breaking the silence, "It's just... tonight has been so perfect. It's sad, you know? Sad that it's all going to end soon."
Jungkook, unsure of how to respond, hesitated for a moment before deciding to steer the conversation back towards the movie. "Um, why don't we just, you know, enjoy the rest of the movie? It's—”
However, before he could finish, Taehyung's head snapped up, and in a louder voice, he exclaimed. "I can't! Because once the movie ends, it's just time to sleep. And when I wake up, reality hits, and I'll have to go back home, and then everything's over."
Jungkook remained quiet, his hand still gently tracing soothing patterns on Taehyung's back as he let him release the pent-up frustrations.
Taehyung's voice trembled as he continued, "It hurts, Jungkook. This taste of a better life, even if it's just for a night, makes going back to the crappy one I'm used to even harder," he admitted, his eyes welling with sadness. Clutching the teddy bear, he then turned his gaze towards him. "I've had stuffed animals before, but none of them survived in my house. Perhaps it's better if this one stays here with you," he suggested, revealing a vulnerability that cut through Jungkook.
The silence that followed was heavy.
"You can't go back to that place, Taehyung. There has to be another option for you."
Taehyung responded with a bitter laugh, "Where else would I go, Officer? I don't have a plan. I'll probably end up on the street or something."
Shaking his head, Jungkook argued, "No, that's not the only option. We can figure something out."
"I'm not as strong as you were when you ran away. I don't know what to do next."
"You're stronger than you realize, Taehyung. Much stronger."
As the other continued to wear a skeptical expression, Jungkook tightened his grip on his hand. In a moment of genuine impulse, he uttered the words that surprised even himself.
"You can stay here, Taehyung. Move in with me."
The weight of his offer hung in the air, and he realized that he truly meant it.
Taehyung's initial shock gave way to a glimmer of hope. "Are you sure?" He asked nervously.
Jungkook nodded, "Yeah, I'm sure. You don't have to face this alone. We'll figure it out together."
"How can I repay you for this?" Taehyung asked while chewing on his lip.
He dismissed the idea with a shake of his head. "Don't worry about it."
Taehyung, though, kept asking him if he was absolutely sure about this.
Jungkook reached a tipping point, pulling the other closer.
Looking into his eyes, he repeated, "Please believe me when I say I want you to move in. Let me help you, Starboy."
Taehyung's gaze lingered for a moment before he nodded, a blush coloring his cheeks. Without missing a beat, he threw a teasing comment. "You know, Officer J, I always had a feeling you liked me. And now you're inviting me to move in. Bold move."
Rolling his eyes in response, Jungkook replied with a smirk, "Don't let me regret this already."
Taehyung smiled but a sigh escaped his lips as he said, "I wish there was a way I could help you too."
"How about being my dogsitter? I've always wanted a dog, but my schedule doesn't allow it. You can help me out with that."
Taehyung's eyes light up with excitement. "Yes! I'd love to be your dogsitter, Jungkook. Consider it a deal."
Taehyung wrapped his arms around him in a series of enthusiastic hugs.
"Is this going to be a regular thing?"
Taehyung nodded, his head still nestled in his neck. "Yep, I've needed someone to hug for a long time, and you're perfect for that."
Jungkook grinned, a warm sensation spreading in his stomach.
As they eased back into the movie, Taehyung's mood shifted, his tears having been replaced by smiles.
"So, Officer Jungkook," he began, amusement shining through his eyes, "Where am I supposed to sleep now that I'm part of the household?"
While Jungkook was thinking about his limited space, he said, "You'll have the home office. It's not exactly spacious, but it'll do just fine for a bed.”
"A home office, huh? I was hoping for a more VIP arrangement, maybe share your bed, Officer."
Jungkook spat out his drink, nearly choking on it. Taehyung couldn't stop laughing.
He cleared his throat, recovering from the teasing comment. "Nice try, but the home office it is. It's cozy, I promise."
The other grinned playfully, "Aw and here I thought I'd get to use your comfy bed."
Jungkook rolled his eyes, trying to mask a small smile. "You're lucky you're getting a room at all. Don't push it."
"Alright, alright, Officer Grumpy. I'll take what I can get."
They returned to the movie. He gazed over, admiring the genuine happiness in Taehyung's eyes, as his laughter filled the room.
They made it through a second movie, or at least Jungkook did, as Taehyung gave in to sleep halfway through the action film. He didn't mind in the slightest, especially since Taehyung's head had found a comfortable spot on his lap, resting on a pillow.
At some point the explosions on the screen lost Jungkook's attention, distracted by the steady rise and fall of Taehyung's breathing.
Observing him turned out to be quite relaxing.
He reached for a soft blanket and gently wrapped it around Taehyung, not wanting to disturb his much-needed sleep. He decided to limit his own movements as he found a comfortable position on the couch and closed his eyes.
His fingers found their way into Taehyung's hair and Jungkook felt something warm in his heart as he listened to his steady breathing.
He fell asleep with Taehyung peacefully resting in his arms.
