Teen Dramatics

Summary:

Wei Wuxian finds out his adoptive family had to leave and left him in charge of the home (which probably wasn’t the best idea) and invited Lan Wangji to have some fun together on the internet but with the twist that they’re in the early 2000s and Wei Wuxian is a scene kid and Lan Wangji is emo.

Or

scene Wei Wuxian and emo Lan Wangji shenanigans during the 2000s + headcannon backstory (i changed some parts from the canonical book to make it more 2000s esque)

Notes:

If anyone from school who’s subscribed to my ao3 and sees this. I’d like to say, I am perfectly mentally sane and do not worry, I am in my natural habitat by writing this.

Work Text:

Tonight was a boring Friday evening to a long weekend, or was it?

Wei Wuxian finally convinced his something of a boyfriend’s uncle to let Lan Wangji stay over at his for a sleepover. It took a lot of work considering Lan Qiren always made it clear that he thought Wei Wuxian was a bad influence for his nephew, but Wei Wuxian promised that they wouldn’t do anything bad.

Nothing too bad at least.

hey wut time r u cuming ovr?

Prbbly 6.

So 5 mins?

Yep.

Wei Wuxian had to give credit to Lan Wangji for abbreviating all his words just like he did but always added a period to his texts like an English professor. The scene teen had to hand it to him, he was excelling in all his classes so it wouldn’t be a surprise that he’d keep a good habit around even when texting his boyfriend.

The doorbell rang in exactly five minutes, right on time as Lan Wangji always was, never a minute early or late. Wei Wuxian flipped his rhinestone encrusted hiptop phone shut and left it on the bed before he practically jumped down all the stairs just to answer the door as quickly as he could, taking it as a challenge every time to try and beat his last standing record.

He swung the door open and greeted his boyfriend, ushering him inside quickly. Wei Wuxian was totally prepared for the exciting night ahead and with the rest of his adoptive family gone for a family emergency, they left Wei Wuxian to stay back and watch over everything, promising them that they’d call to see how the other was doing.

As Lan Wangji took his shoes off at the door, he took a look at his perpetually overdressed boyfriend, decked out in one of his band tees, colourful skinny jeans with, for some reason, two studded belts and loads of gel bracelets and kandi that Lan Wangji personally made with Wei Wuxian that they gave to one another on one of their dates. Lan Wangji blushed, feeling quite touched that his boyfriend was wearing it since was wearing them too. They really contrasted one another but still somewhat similar with Lan Wangji also wearing a band shirt except it wasn't colourful, it was black, in fact his whole outfit wasn't too colourful, black pants, black eyeshadow, black sweater (borrowed from Wei Wuxian) black gel bracelets, even black hair! All natural of course, his hair was black from birth, perhaps he was born to be like this.

His boyfriend though, always being the one to initiate things since he was more of a proactive guy, was the one to give Lan Wangji a little peck on the lips before leading him up to his room to do who knows what devious plans Wei Wuxian planned tonight.

Making their way, Wei Wuxian reached for his MacBook that was sitting on his desk and hopped onto the bed, flipping it open and entering his password. He turned to Lan Wangji after going into his web browser with a shit-eating grin on his face. “Soooo.. any ideas of what we should search for first?”

It was obvious that Wei Wuxian had some devious ideas to do for entertainment tonight and Lan Wangji couldn’t do anything but go along with what he planned. “Ok fine..”

They both took a deep breath in and answered at the same time, “Stickam?” The two looked at each other with surprise before bursting into laughter as Wei Wuxian typed in the website, saying the site name really slowly as he typed it out.

Wei Wuxian clicked on a random stream of some random guy singing while playing the guitar, Lan Wangji and Wei Wuxian both looked at each other for a moment before smiling before Wei Wuxian felt that this was too boring and switched to a different one of someone he was subscribed to. He typed something in the chat before flipping his wildly dyed hair over his face again with a shake of his head.

Seeing him toss his hair over his shoulder reminded Lan Wangji couldn’t forget the first time they met. It was in a math class in grade 10 and a stupid boy hit him in the side of his neck with a slimy spitball and when he turned around to look who did it, he saw Wei Wuxian with a cocky grin, it was obvious that this stranger wanted Lan Wangji to know that it was him who did it. Oh how far they’ve come.

The pondering boy was brought back into reality when his boyfriend nudged him to show a different website called “rotten.com”. Lan Wangji scrunched his face up in displeasure at the name, he knew this would be something stupid thing that Wei Wuxian was always up to. “What is this?”

“Rotten.com, duh.” He gestured to the giant logo with an equally giant grin. “It’s just shock images and I need my Lan Zhan to be here with me to comfort me!” Wei Wuxian said in a sarcastic needy tone while wrapping an arm around Lan Wangji and clicking on a picture with his other hand.

The first picture that Lan Wangji reluctantly agreed to see with Wei Wuxian’s incessant pleading was an image of a girl in a bathtub with some weird orange liquid shooting out of her anus and landing on her face where there was a yellow mask covering the area around her eyes. Lan Wangji instantly shut off the tab and looked at Wei Wuxian with an incredulous expression. “What the hell was that!? You’re a sick, sick bastard, you know that?” It seemed Wei Wuxian hadn't changed one bit.

Though Lan Wangji’s tone was harsh, Wei Wuxian knew he didn’t mean it too badly. He chuckled and nuzzled his cheek against Lan Wangji’s earning him a muttered “frivolous” comment but he could feel his boyfriend’s face warm up anyways. “Heh.. I thought you emos were supposed to be in touch with your emotions or something? How could you say something so mean to me?” Wei Wuxian asked like a damsel in distress, putting the back of his palm on top of his head dramatically.

“I am. I’m also brutally honest too, that’s part of being myself which is also what they preach.” Lan Wangji said with a coldly indifferent tone, pushing Wei Wuxian to increase his theatrics even more.

"Aw man, you totally suck!" Wei Wuxian retaliated by poking Lan Wangji in the centre of his chest.

"If you keep this up I'm going to remove you from my top 8."

This managed to hit Wei Wuxian where it hurt. "You don't mean that! You're so cruel Lan Zhaaaan!!!" He grappled onto his boyfriend, clutching onto him and burying his face into his soft black hair, half as a tactic to charm him but also half to smell that sandalwood scent he always carried, as he used his crocodile tears to get his way like he usually did.

Lan Wangji frowned but he sighed, giving in or else Wei Wuxian would pester him endlessly for the rest of the night. "You're right, I wouldn't but God, why am I with you, you're so insufferable."

Seeing that Lan Wangji wasn't being serious, Wei Wuxian held onto his boyfriend's arm and thanked him over and over again, "thank you Lan Zhan, I love you!!" To show his appreciation, Wei Wuxian leaned in and kissed him on the cheek.

"I love you too my perpetually insufferable monster who holds my heart in the palm of his hand." Lan Wangji shot back sarcastically but they both knew that he meant every sweet word he said.

Before they could say anything else, they heard the landline ringing from the kitchen and Wei Wuxian jumped up, dashing down the stairs to get it. It was just the rest of his family calling in to check how Wei Wuxian's house sitting was going.

"Heyyy dude, what's up?" Wei Wuxian asked with vigour as he picked it up.

"Cut the crap Wei Ying, is the house destroyed? Is there anything broken?"

"Ahhh, Jiang Cheng I see you haven't changed one bit." Wei Wuxian said as he shook his head, Jiang Cheng couldn't see it but he could definitely sense it with Wei Wuxian being his annoying little brother and all.

Similarly, Wei Wuxian could tell that Jiang Cheng was probably rubbing the bridge of his nose out of frustration. "Just answer the question. How are you guys holding down the fort?"

Wei Wuxian felt like a thunderbolt had just shot down his spine as he heard "guys". "...How did you know I had someone over?" He asked in a whisper shout, hoping his mom and dad wouldn't hear.

"You're Wei Wuxian, there's no way in a million years where we're gone over the long weekend, and you wouldn't invite someone over, or at worst, have a giant party." Jiang Cheng said calmly before loud sounds of rustling static on the other end were heard and the sweet soothing sound of Jiang Yanli was heard.

Wei Wuxian suddenly softened up at hearing his sister's voice, putting on a much nicer mask just for her. "Oh yes, yes we're doing fine, the house hasn't exploded or caught on fire or anything so that's good."

Jiang Yanli giggled at his joke, she always did so, even when they were horrible, which might be how he ended up the way he was now. "Hey, glad to hear you're doing good. We left 20$ on the counter for you to pick up some food for yourselves!" Jiang Yanli said, being the angelic sweetheart that she was.

Wei Wuxian smiled as he heard her voice, a nice contrast to Jiang Cheng's blabbering, loud voice. "Wait, so you know?”

He heard Jiang Yanli's giggle, "of course I know, me and Jiang Cheng both know, but don't worry we'll keep it under wraps!"

It seemed that Yanli had said that a little too loudly and they all heard Yu Ziyuan ask sharply, "keep what under wraps?"

Wei Wuxian could already hear Jiang Cheng come up with an elaborate lie to cover up Wei Wuxian in the background of the call and Yanli whispering a quick “goodbye” into the receiver before a minor chaos broke out in the Jiang family’s car ride.

Just then, Lan Wangji came downstairs at the perfect time. It seems even when he didn't know what's going on, he still manages to show up at the right time. "What happened? Who was that?"

The teenager smiled as he saw his pale figure come into view around the corner and he shook his head while leaning against the counter. "Oh nothing much, just my family calling in." He said, brushing off the argument like it was nothing, grabbing the money on the counter and waving it in the air, "let's go get something?"

Lan Wangji shrugged but that just meant a yes, he wasn't a very expressive or talkative person usually. At least he wasn't until Wei Wuxian came around and broke that shell of his and forced him out for the better.

-

They went together towards the nearest restaurant which just so happens to be the pizza place where they had their first date.

"Hey Lan Zhan do you remember this place?" Wei Wuxian asked as he pointed to the restaurant they were nearing.

"Mn." Lan Wangji nodded, not even giving Wei Wuxian a word to quell his need for being chatty.

Fortunately, Wei Wuxian didn't seem to be in the mood to mess with his boyfriend any longer for his silence and just went inside, Lan Wangji thanking whatever god was out there for that. Before they entered, Wei Wuxian rushed in front of Lan Wangji to hold the door open while saying, "after you m'lady." Which definitely earned him a gentle flick on the nose.

They went in and bought a small pizza to bring home, Wei Wuxian chatting to Lan Wangji the whole way about their favourite bands and random schoolwork they completed, and Wei Wuxian surprisingly had the nearly same grades as the other. It seemed even when the teachers hated him, his work was still good enough that they could overlook his disruptive behaviour.

Once they got home, they ran upstairs after taking off their shoes at the door, leaving their jackets on the stair banister before Wei Wuxian happily leading Lan Wangji upstairs to his bedroom where they'd undoubtedly get crumbs all over the floor or bed after they'd finish eating.

After a while, the two managed to eat half of it, saving the last four slices for tomorrow. When Lan Wangji went downstairs to put the pizza away in the fridge, Wei Wuxian got a text from his friend, Nie Huaisang.

dere’s a party @ Zixuan's!

We'll b there :D

Being Wei Wuxian, the second Lan Wangji came up the stairs he tried to keep it in for a moment but Lan Wangji could already tell with the goofy smile painted onto his face, he had something he wanted to say. So he sat down beside Wei Wuxian, without a word, he raised an eyebrow and Wei Wuxian sighed, not being able to hold it in anymore.

"Can we go to a party? Nie Huaisang said there's one at Jin Zixuan's!" Wei Wuxian even got on one knee and begged Lan Wangji with puppy dog eyes.

How could Lan Wangji say no to that? Also because there’d definitely be repercussions that would sap any sense of joy Lan Wangji had for the rest of the night if he refused, so there they were, on their way to Jin Zixuan’s house. Luckily he lived nearby and they could already hear the suggestive pop music blasting through the open windows, no doubt annoying his neighbours.

"So Lan Zhan, how are you feeling after being invited to your first ever high school party?" Wei Wuxian asked excitedly as he knocked on the door which was when Lan Wangji noticed him carrying two of his parents’ bottles of baijiu.

“You’re the one who was invited not me.”

“Yeah, but you’re my plus one so still!” He nudged Lan Wangji to which he was responded with an, “mn.” Before the door opened.

A flashy figure dressed in a cheesy graphic tee, black skinny jeans, his accessories all gold coloured and who else could it be but Jin Zixuan himself? Wei Wuxian didn’t really like him at first when he spoke badly about his sister but they were all good now that he proved to be a better person. He rushed to give him a hug and a pat on the back before beckoning Lan Wangji to come in.

In the centre of the party, Lan Wangji just awkwardly followed after Wei Wuxian as he and Jin Zixuan discussed how the party was going until he revealed the alcohol that he had taken from the basement, putting it on the table for anyone to come and try a sip of it. It was a hard alcohol, it had over a 50% alcohol volume and was sold as a cooking alcohol to bypass laws in the west.

Wei Wuxian had already skipped the mixer and started downing a bottle of alcohol like it was the last night of his life. Lan Wangji had to rush over to calm him down before he’d pass out. “Wei Ying! Slow down, you’re gonna die if you keep drinking like that!” He scolded harshly before snatching the bottle away.

“Heh.. you think I’m a lightweight like you? Well you gottanother thing comin’ for ya bud!” Wei Wuxian was already slurring his words and Lan Wangji took a look at the bottle of whisky, feeling the bottle to seem pretty light until he peered inside and saw an alarming 75% of the contents were already drunk in those few seconds that Wei Wuxian had picked it up.

Lan Wangji rolled his eyes and decided that it was best to not let anyone drink out of the same bottle his boyfriend had drunk out of and there wasn’t that much left anyways so he chugged the last bit, not expecting anything too much out of it.

He collapsed on the spot.

Wei Wuxian, being a drunken idiot but still a caring boyfriend, cradled Lan Wangji in his arms before dragging him to a nearby couch, thanking the heavens that Jin Zixuan’s house was big enough that it held a giant couch, where they could sit and rest for a while without interacting with the couples making out on the other side of the couch. Still, Wei Wuxian didn’t feel drunk enough so he went back, this time going straight for the vodka, mixing it with a sprite so it didn’t taste too gross that he’d puke.

Fortunately, that was all he needed, he stumbled around the first floor and somehow made it to the dance floor, the place closest to the speakers where he could hear brokeNCYDE playing.

“Oh em gee, this is like my favourite song!!!” Exclaimed Wei Wuxian before he started to dance in a drunken stupor, at first it seemed kinda lame but after a few minutes, he started to do the worm and even started to swing his body around with just his hands planted onto the floor, effectively doing a half assed job at breakdancing.

In a moment, while Wei Wuxian was spinning and dancing and jumping around, feeling at one with the party, he began to feel a rising sensation like he floating as his mortal body transcended space, time and the laws of physics from how awesome his dancing skills were.

"I AM A GOD!!!!!! WHOOOO!!!!!!!!" Wei Wuxian screamed at the top of his lungs as he room was spinning as he was lifted up to touch God's finger. He could hear everyone below him chant his name over and over again, that was until Lan Wangji called out to him from the ground.

"WEI YING GET DOWN FROM THERE!!!" Yelled Lan Wangji as he pushed through the crowd that was holding him up and passing him around like a stage diving rockstar.

Wei Wuxian only cackled in response, not being able to hear Lan Wangji over the crowd screaming and raving about him. Luckily, though completely wasted, Lan Wangji managed to push someone who was about to receive Wei Wuxian to the side and caught him before he could stir up any more trouble for the both of them.

Lan Wangji felt a bit dizzy from the alcohol and couldn't stand properly so the second Wei Wuxian landed in his arms, he almost fell over if it wasn't for Wei Wuxian holding him up. Though leaving his centre of balance in Wei Wuxian's hands (literally) wasn't too bright of an idea because before Lan Wangji knew, their lips were connected and he could see a camera flash in front of them.

He was too preoccupied with the rush of the sloppy, drunken kiss to notice Wei Wuxian snapping a selfie of them kissing. Oh hell, at this point Lan Wangji wouldn’t even mind if he posted it online, he might even save the picture and post on his own MySpace page too, all he wanted to do now was taste the flavour of Sprite mixed with vodka and whiskey on his tongue as the crowd around them all went silent before cheering them on. Lan Wangji even pinned him against the countertop just for kicks.

The boy tried to recompose himself, reluctantly pulling away from Wei Wuxian, whose lips seemed addictive at the moment. Of course, in all Lan Wangji's silent glory, even when he's totally wasted, he said absolutely nothing, awaiting his boyfriend to say the most stupidest thing he'd ever heard in his life.

"Damnn!!! That was so hot, come here Lan Zhan!" Wei Wuxian exclaimed as he pulled Lan Wangji back into the heady drug of a kiss. Maybe that wasn’t as stupid as Lan Wangji initially expected. The crowd dissipated after getting their fill of the drama, leaving the couple alone to just make out for the time being.
After a while though, Lan Wangji pulled away again, his eyes dazed and staring straight ahead at a random spot on the wall, spooking Wei Wuxian a bit.

"Lan Zhan?" He asked as he waved a hand in front of Lan Wangji's face, even going as far as to brush the hair covering his eye to the side which would usually either earn Wei Wuxian a slap or a good chastising for messing up his hair.

Luckily, this movement did knock him out of his trance before he looked down at Wei Wuxian and started to cry without a facial reaction as he usually did, to which Wei Wuxian had to drag him into one of Jin Zixuan's ginormous bathrooms, sitting Lan Wangji in a bathtub before trying to comfort him in private. "Hey, what's wrong?" Wei Wuxian asked, trying not to show how much he was worrying for Lan Wangji in case it might upset him for making him feel bad. Wei Wuxian was used to this, teenagers are so complex and emotional and especially Lan Wangji, he was a bit of a wreck, they both were, but luckily they’re both working through it together.

Lan Wangji didn't say anything but he rolled up the sleeves from his skelanimals hoodie that he had "borrowed" from Wei Wuxian, showing him the cuts on his arm. It must've been weighing down on his mind.. They seemed old, calming Wei Wuxian down a little and realized Lan Wangji had to have been holding back from telling Wei Wuxian the whole time they knew each other because he didn't want to trouble him so much. He knew in this moment, he couldn't use words to fix it.

Wei Wuxian got ahold of Lan Wangji's arm and brought his lips to it, kissing his scars on his arm softly, brushing his lips against the unevenness and imperfection on his skin. He could feel Lan Wangji's blushing even without looking at his face from how warm his arm became but he didn't stop, he kept doting on him lovingly until Lan Wangji would push him away. Still, as his head was pushed off gently, Wei Wuxian couldn’t let go, his hand snaking down to Lan Wangji's hand, squeezing it to convey his love for him. "Why did you cut yourself? You're perfect my love.." Just to emphasize his point, he leaned forward to kiss his forehead but slipped from the smoothness of the bathtub, dragging the both of them down until he was hovering above Lan Wangji, taking this chance to give him a peck.

"I was lost.. until I met you, you saved me, cracked and teared down the wall I built up against everyone else and introduced me to the world and everyone around me. I just couldn’t hide it anymore. I love you too much for me to one day tell you about what I used to do to myself and.. you’d think I’m disgusting, a monster." Lan Wangji’s words were quiet but they rang as loud as crashing waves at the wave pool waterpark they went to together one time during the summer. It was there where Wei Wuxian caught a glimpse of Lan Wangji’s scars but he never mentioned it, he just waited for when Lan Wangji was ready to tell him himself.

"I love you so much, I would never think that of you!" Wei Wuxian felt slightly hurt that Lan Wangji would think he would be such a jerk to make fun of him for it but he used to be bullied for how he dressed or looked so he couldn’t hold it against him. He was just glad Lan Wangji trusted him enough to tell him tonight. Wei Wuxian hugged him tightly, nearly squeezing the life out of his boyfriend’s poor body.

His boyfriend's usual cold demeanour melted like snow under the springtime sun, he hugged him back and nodded. "Mn, I love you too." Lan Wangji said with his unfitting stoic demeanour, unknowingly bringing tears to Wei Wuxian's eyes.

Wei Wuxian got out of the tub and wetted a hand towel under the sink, washing away Lan Wangji's tears and unfortunately, also his eyeliner. "Let's get out of here, shall we?" Wei Wuxian asks as he held out a hand for Lan Wangji, waiting for him to take it.

Lan Wangji smiled, placing his hand in his boyfriends and letting him lead them out of there before saying their goodbyes to Jin Zixuan and Nie Huaisang. As they walked back to his home, Wei Wuxian pulled out the picture of them kissing, showing it to Lan Wangji just to get a reaction out of him.

A grunted, "Frivolous." Was the only comment Lan Wangji made but that prompted his next question,

"Should I post this online?" Wei Wuxian asked, waving his phone around with the picture still on the screen. Even though he looked like he was joking with his usual charming smile but Lan Wangji knew him well enough that Wei Wuxian was actually contemplating if he should and he felt a little touched by how his boyfriend cared to ask him first for permission.

"Do what you want, I don't really care." Lan Wangji replied nonchalantly while shrugging his shoulders, but he reached out to hold Wei Wuxian's hand, squeezing his hand as a way to get him back for earlier, in a loving way of course. Lan Wangji knew that this would probably become a decision he'd regret later but for now, he couldn't care less.

Once they got back to Wei Wuxian's home, he went straight to uploading the photo onto his computer and on his MySpace page, titling it as "me and mai hawt bf! XD" while adding Lan Wangji's account link with the image.

purple-river: u rlly pretended 2 stay @ home and went out 2 get drunk? smh slut

After a few more hours of browsing the internet’s shock sites, funny YouTube videos and listening to some miscellaneous collection of their music combined while attempting to summon a demon for fun, they both decided that it was finally time for bed so they went to brush their teeth and did their nighttime routine of removing the layers of makeup they had on before changing into their pyjamas.

"Good night Wei Ying." Lan Zhan said from the ground, both of them knowing damn well he'd be lying on top of Wei Wuxian soon enough.

"Good night Lan Zhan."

In the end, it was indeed a good night, their problems fixed, well some were caused this very night but others were fixed, it was just a 50/50 balance at this point. Oh well, it wouldn't be too big of a deal, if they could cause it, they could get over it together and definitely with Wei Wuxian cracking jokes and laughing the whole time paired with Lan Wangji scoffing and rolling his eyes but internally chuckling.

Notes:
