Absolute 10/10 wowzers
I’m gonna just write about everything I remember after reading this 25,000 word marathon (also cool how the fic is EXACTLY 25k words).
Throughout the story, never was there a moment when the characters felt off or mischaracterized. I’m glad there was a section and painting for each of ena’s relationships with the other n25 members, especially mizuki for obvious reasons.
We get see ena’s character and journey be represented through these dreams that she has. The first being how the sunset is appreciated and how ena thinks about how she wants her art to be seen and admired by others. The next one being a nightmare with mafuyu, seeing ena’s middle school self crushed under her father’s cruel and unforgiving statements. The dream with kanade rescuing ena with her song from drowning in despair over her crushed hopes and dreams. Idk if I’m skipping over another dream here but next is the one with mizuki, not amia. mizuena mizuena blah blah blah. With narcissus using the river to gaze upon his own beauty, we see ena and mizuki see each other through the eyes of the other (wow that sentence looks weird). The both look prettier than how they thought they looked since they love I mean they don’t see each other for their mistakes and blemishes but rather what makes them a person that the other can rely on and appreciate. Yeah idk what I just wrote there but you get the meaning.
Relating Sisyphus’s fate and Ena’s passion for art was so genius. “One must imagine Sisyphus happy” works so well with ena, especially when we see it towards the end of the fic. It’s the big realization moment for how ena perceives her dream of art, being happy with the overall process and time she puts into it even if the results aren’t something she feels the most confident in. Ena asking for her father’s opinion on the painting underscores this, as ena is no longer fearful of his rejection and criticism while still planning on submitting a piece riddled with mistakes that he bluntly comments on. And him handing her the varnish, the liquid used to protect the finished artwork underneath, shows that he accepts ena’s dream, this time in a different form that she’s happy with. It’s not about being like her father, but about doing what she loves to do. Idk, I could be way off on how it’s supposed to be interpreted, but who cares.
