Crying On Her Back Under the Stars

Summary:

Slight spoilers for episode 11 of the Kusuriya No Hitorigoto (Apothecary Diaries) anime.

Jinshi gets drunk and cries on Maomao's back.

It's pretty much just an expanded version of the anime scene because I loved it so much.

Notes:

I wrote this because that scene made me cry, and apparently I wanted to cry more. Hell, I'm even crying while writing these notes.

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

It's a cold night and somehow Maomao ends up on the ground, sitting on a very-drunk Jinshi's lap. He's holding onto her like she's his teddy bear and she's desperately trying to pry his arms from around her waist, but pauses and thinks.

'Now that I think about it, he caught me after I lost my footing and slipped while climbing. Maybe it would be rude to ask him to let go of me without thanking him first.'

She relaxes a little and sits back down on his lap.

"Jinshi-sama-"

Maomao stops, she feels something plop onto her neck. She looks at Jinshi. His face is red from alcohol and his eyes are filling up with tears, obscuring his usually bright and twinkly eyes. Eyes that were once playful and full of life are now downcast and sad. He's crying. This is the first time Maomao's ever seen this side of him. She doesn't know what to say to him, so she doesn't say anything at all and just watches him, quietly.

He closes his eyes and lets the tears run down his cheeks and drop onto her neck. They're cold and they tickle a little when they hit her.

After a suffocating silence Jinshi speaks, hugging her tighter as he begs her in what is barely a whisper, "Just a little longer. Keep me warm for just a little longer."

It's a cold night, and Jinshi doesn't have a jacket on, so Maomao sighs, and she does. She sits down and stares at the stars, letting Jinshi rest his head on her back and cry silently. She sits and takes in the sweet smell of the air, letting Jinshi hold her tight, as if he's floating at sea in a storm and she's the driftwood keeping him afloat.

And so they stay there for a while. For how long? They don't know. Eventually the tears stop falling, and Maomao get's bored of stargazing, but they don't move. Even though the storm has calmed and he can tread water, he still clings to his driftwood, and his driftwood stays there, letting him save enough energy to swim to shore.

Notes:

This is the first fanfic I have ever written, so I welcome any possible feedback. Thanks for reading!
