Mavise knew this would happen. There was something very wrong. Very wrong.
Maze was nowhere to be seen, which was the first red flag. Maze was a disaster to handle, but it would always be in everyone`s best interest for her to be close to someone mature, like her twin sister, Mavise. Mavise was more mature, and obviously, her mother needed to pay for Maze`s therapy. Very related.
In summer, like now, Maze was usually wandering around the house, trying to find a way out. They always managed to keep her inside somehow, but she sometimes managed to find a way out. And those times were ugly.
“Maze!” Mavise shouted, running down the hill. They lived in an isolated area on the coast of northern California, and there wasn’t anybody nearby. Even if there were others nearby, mother would have scared them away. If mother wouldn’t have scared them away, then their mansion would. Mavise never ever had friends over because of the aura of that place. It made her feel creeped out, what would it do to others?
Now, Maze was out. Mavise looked into every corner and cranny of every street she could find, running over fences. Maze was dangerous when it came to summer. She was even more curious and often decided she wanted to do things her way. Despite them being twins, and both seventeen, Mavise often felt like she was the one mothering Maze all the time.
She ran into another pathway. It was the last one left. She sincerely hoped Maze would be here since her longs were starting to hurt way too much to be healthy. She was too damn tired for this. In all honesty, she loved summer too. Even though where they lived was extremely cloudy in every sense of the word, summer was still enjoyable considering she had no homework.
All she wanted to do was sit pretty in her room and listen to music. Why mother was never home, she did not know. She was half convinced her mother was out clubbing.
Who knew where their father was. She hadn’t heard from him for more than a year. Just disappeared into space. Her mother loved to point that out when she was wasted and was lounging on the sofa with half her body threatening to drop.
Maze found those nights quite entertaining. She had started interviewing her mother whenever one of these episodes happened. Her favorite question was, ‘Do you ever feel like you should have been less wild and avoided hooking up?’ not rude in the slightest. Mavise would have fainted if she had ever said that to her mother`s face, or any adult, for that matter.
Mother would have slapped Maze if she wasn’t wasted, but she was wasted, and all she did was graphically explain how hooking up wasn’t a bad thing, but to not follow in her footsteps and to always be… prepared. Mavise was disgusted by that, but Maze had been nodding wisely, “Of course… of course.”
Mavise just waited for the morning. She didn’t like it when her mother was wasted. More chance of her sleeping in someone else`s room. Last time, she`d slept in Mavise`s room, and Mavise found her bed sheets ruined with snot and tears. Not a good mixture.
She was pulled out of her thoughts by a noise. Voices. She heard voices coming from underground and stopped in her tracks. Could it be…? Yes, it probably was. Her sister could be hiding in a spaceship and Mavise wouldn’t be surprised.
She dropped low to the ground and put her ear to the dirt. Disgusting, sure, but something could be heard…
“Yeah, yeah sure. I made sure of it.” A voice said dismissively. It was raspy, but not unused. And it was unmistakably Maze. God, she was underground? What would she do next? Underwater, or maybe in space? Mavise was done with all of this. Mother didn’t have to deal with all of Maze`s bullshit. Mavise had to. Why, she did not know. Somehow her responsibility had shifted from minding her business and acing her exams to taking care of her sister. How.
“You sure? The ropes are… uncomfortable…”
There was another voice though, which really made her concerned. It was confusing, which made this even scarier. A confused citizen at her sister`s mercy? Recipe for disaster. Or most likely a legal case against her sister. It had happened once already….
She looked for a way inside underground, her hands searching over the surface. Surely a tunnel entrance had to be here somewhere, maybe nearby? This was a little far away from their home, so the tunnel entrance couldn’t be anywhere near their house…
Mother was probably dancing to 1980 music right now, while Mavise was stuck trying to find an entrance to an underground cave. What the actual heck…
“Maze I swear to god I`m gonna-“ she hissed under her breath, but was cut off when she felt something slip from under her feet and she was plunged underground, dirt flying everywhere. It seemed the soil was particularly damp somewhere and it didn’t hold strong under her weight. Oh sweet bliss, now she was falling to her apparent death. Go girlboss.
There was a scream, but it wasn’t Maze or Mavise. They were both used to all kinds of injuries, mainly Maze`s fault. Or maybe their parents because of the very unsafe house they were living in that obviously needed a renovation.
She fell on a piece of hard rock, and groaned, spitting dirt out of her mouth. She could feel a cut forming on her hip and internally sighed. It had been a hot minute since she had been injured from one of Maze`s lovely experiments, but it seemed she was going to have to start getting used to it again.
“Oh! Mavise figured you`d be here soon.” Maze exclaimed cheerily, while the person in the background gave a little shriek. Mavise bared her teeth, and stood up gingerly, limping over to her sister.
Maze`s black hair was short and messily cropped. That, paired with her pale skin, made her look like the picture of their mother. Mavise looked more like her father –I know, it sucks to look like an asshole- with a strong jaw line, and blue eyes.
Mavise thought that she looked pretty good, but that wasn’t Maze`s opinion, exactly. Mavise was done caring about what Maze thought though. She had been done with that for over seven years. The last time she cared, Maze had tried to give her a makeover with her mother`s makeup… and mother had come home, and blamed Mavise for not controlling her sister. Dear ten-year-old Mavise should have known better. Fuck life.
Mavise wasn’t focused on Maze`s looks, though. She was focused on the fact that she was holding a needle. And had medical equipment on a table nearby. And the phlebotomy tools. And the guy strapped to a chair in the corner.
“Holy shit,” She breathed, for once not caring about how that sounded. This was a little too far. From experimenting on animals to this? Oh, help them. Mother didn’t have enough money to get a lawyer. That legal case was gonna be tough. “What the actual fuck are you doing here? And who the hell is that guy?”
She asked, pointing to him. He looked especially at ease, if not a little confused. He didn’t have the average look people around here had. Instead, he sported blonde hair and blue eyes. He didn’t look scared, or afraid, or anything people should feel when faced with Maze, so that was the main factor in why Mavise thought he wasn’t pretty high on intellect. Guys, or girls, who thought Maze was in any way ‘normal’ and ‘an easy fling’ were often like that.
“This guy is Jake. Absolutely astonishing. Truly unique.” Maze declared proudly, staring as said Jake as though he was the light to her darkness. Mavise shifted uncomfortably,
“You know maybe you should go clubbing like mom instead of hooking up with people underground….?”
“Oh, no!” Maze said, surprised at the same time Jake said, “Yes!”
“You`re not on the same page about anything,” Mavise sighed,
“I am so fucking happy I`m over that phase.” Mavise sighed, shaking her head, “Can you please tell me why we`re underground? And why you`re getting going to draw his blood with probably very dirty equipment?”
“My equipment is extremely clean, thank you very much.” She said defensively. “He is a very interesting test subject. And he completely consents!! See, I`m improving from last time.”
Last time, the non-consenting test subject was a frog, but it was a good example to explain to Maze how she should always ask before poking things at people, especially needles. And she had learned. Good thing, or there would be a lot of court cases.
“Why are we even here?” Mavise asked, looking around the dark place. Jake mostly stays silent during their conversation, content with staring at Maze like he has no idea he is being the opposite of subtle. She really wished guys –or girls, Maze was flexible- would start to realize how much trouble they caused for Mavise when they decided Maze was worth it, because then, instead of mothering one child, she was trying to take care of two. Not good.
“He lives over there,” Maze points to somewhere, but, since they`re in a small, underground tunnel… it doesn’t get anywhere, “And I was just so surprised! Like, girl, nobody has ever lived this close to us! And you know, I was curious-“
“And a little bit voyeuristic-“ Mavise huffed,
“And so I surprised him-“
“Attacked him from behind-“ She knew that from experience,
“And asked him if he`d be okay with me taking a few samples! You know, nothing extreme, just a few blood tests! It has to be in his blood…”
Mavise sighed to herself. Her sister had never stopped believing in magic.
“…and maybe fairies have possessed him somehow! We have to do this, Mavise! It`s for science.” Maze said casually, picking up the needle and going for Jake`s arm, “Now you just hold still…”
Mavise was staring for a second, just watching as Jake gave her sister a totally not obvious look and said, “Wanna go… golfing after?”
Her cringe tolerance was up now. Mavise lunged forward and grabbed her sister`s arm, “Maze! I don’t think there`s anything in his blood or that he`s fucking possessed! I just think he`s lusting after you and that`s why he agreed to this thing. So he could ask you out later.”
Maze looked a little miffed, “And you think I didn’t notice that? Sure I know he`s been ogling my ankles for the past hour,” She huffed, “It`s pretty obvious, Jake.”
Mavise had a second to acknowledge her sister`s moment of maturity. Those moments were extremely rare, for obvious reasons, and so she enjoyed it when her twin showed some decency and common sense. Like realizing when a guy is lusting after you and how to be a grown-up about it.
To Jake`s credit, he didn’t stammer, “So? I`m clear with what I want. You`re the one who dragged me underground,”
“Just shut up already,” Mavise groaned, any patience gone, and pushed Maze away from him, “We need to go home. Mom`s gonna be home soon.” And they definitely didn’t want the horror mother would have on her face as she watched her two daughters come home smelling of dirt. She needed a shower, and she needed it now.
She was tired of dealing with her sister. She was going to go home, and wish for her eighteen birthday so she could get wasted. She now understood why her mother loved liquor so much.
“But!” Maze said, panicked, “But science!”
“I`m sure he lives here because he has low intellect and doesn’t understand the threat you pose to society,” she sneered, pushing her up the hole in the ground, “We`re getting out of here.”
And they did.
“Uh.. girls? You haven`t untied me yet…”
And poor Jake was left there. Ugh, woman.
