Summary
Eileen Shea lives in the ghost of the Reapings, and the ghost of her mother. She has for years.
But she has managed to gather her own little light in the darkness. Her brother and father walk side-by-side with her no matter how heavy the weight of their loss is. And when the reapings come, they huddle close and let them pass overhead, like one of the Capitol's hovercrafts. The silence is woven with words they'd never speak, tragedies they never want to admit.
And they make it, somehow. They make it all the way to the 68th Hunger Games, where her name is drawn from one of the glass bowls onstage and read aloud in a thick Capitolite accent.
She quickly discerns that if she ever wants her freedom back, she will need to play their game, and possibly sacrifice some of her own principles in the crossfire. But if she makes it out alive, will she even be the same person? If every part of a ship is taken out and replaced over the years, is it even the same ship?
