“Hello, mortal. I am Monitor Kernel Access,” the fog surrounding the sharpie-drawn pentagram faded away revealing the demon that had been called to this summon.
The demon herself was a tall, pale girl with long and majestic coral brown hair that reached almost to her knees. She had white eyes and a long light green dress that had a white bow at the back. For a moment, bright red, green and blue lights had glowed around her before dimming down. She was even smiling ever so slightly, probably because she would be able to gain another soul today. And alas, reaching out of her head were massive, shiny white horns with sharp black tips.
In short, she was beautiful. And Sayori was starstruck.
“Uh. Hey!” Sayori waved, trying to smile in return. Oh no, she looked so silly, simply just wearing turquoise PJs, sitting in front of a rushed altar, plushie by her side, staring at this beautiful demon.
Was this woman a demon or an angel? Sayori couldn’t even tell!
“Whoa. You’re, uh…” Sayori giggled. “...really pretty.” Oh no, why did she say that to her? Is she stupid?
“Uh.” Monitor Kernel Access placed a hand over her mouth. “T-Thank you, mortal.
Sayori wasn’t sure if she was hallucinating, but did she just blush? “Call me Sayori!”
“Well, Sayori,” Monitor Kernel Access continued, “what makes you wish to summon me.”
“Sooo…” Sayori began. Admittedly, this ask was a bit embarrassing, especially because it required her soul. “My friend said that I was the type to sell my soul for some butter biscuits , and I said I’d take her up on that so now I’m here asking you for that. It was between that and something else really.”
“And what was that other thing you could have chosen?” the demon inquired.
Sayori lowered her head and whispered, “help me get a girlfriend.”
She looked back up at Monitor Kernel Access, who looked… Surprised? Pitiful? Sayori couldn’t even tell.
Monitor Kernel Access bent down to almost Sayori’s level, just a bit higher since she was taller. She put her finger on Sayori’s mouth and made a small shushing sound.
“I’m not supposed to do this,” she whispered, “but I’m willing to do both, just for you.”
“No, just the cookies,” Sayori let out a sad laugh. I don’t deserve anything else.
“Nonsense, you deserve the world, Sayori,” Monitor Kernel Access responded, moving her hand to Sayori’s head and brushing through her hair.
Did she say that out loud?
“No, I just read your mind.” She continued brushing through her hair.
“Is there anything you want in return? I can, uh, do some things,” Sayori asked.
“Well, there’s one thing you could do for me,” Monitor Kernel Access removed her hand from Sayori’s head, “could you perhaps…”
The demon stood up and darted her eyes away. “Could you give me a name?”
“I’d love to!” Sayori shot up.
Monitor Kernel Access stepped back at the sudden movement.
Sayori noticed. “Sorry…”
“It’s fine.” The demon in need of a new name stepped forward once again.
Sayori walked over to a corner of her room where at least ten – at least that’s what she had counted last time, but she had gotten a few more recently – half-filled notebooks were stacked in a surprisingly neat pile. She grabbed a random teal one that was sitting at the top and flicked through until she found a blank page.
Then Sayori walked over to her desk and grabbed a pen.
“Okay, and now we just…”
Sayori wrote down the demon’s current “name”, or at least what she had to work with.
Monitor Kernel Access
Sayori then looked over at the words carefully before crossing out and then erasing a majority of the letters, revealing six remaining.
She turned around and showed the page to her new companion.
Monika
“I love it,” her companion smiled, “it… it feels right. I love it so much.”
“So you’re Monika now?” Sayori closed the notebook.
Monika nodded. “Thank you, Sayori. Now, where’s your kitchen?”
“Follow me!” Sayori practically skipped out of her bedroom with Monika quietly following. The two of them walked down the staircase and into Sayori’s kitchen, which was cleaner than Sayori remembered.
“Were Yuri and Natsuki here without telling me?” Sayori whispered to herself. It was normal for Natsuki and Yuri to randomly show up at her house while she was sleeping and the two of them usually ended up cleaning around despite the fact that Sayori neither needed nor deserved that.
She’d have to thank them again.
“This is my kitchen,” Sayori announced, “it’s not normally this clean, we’ll both have to thank my friends for that!”
Monika trotted over to the table and lifted her arms in the air.
“Close your eyes,” she whispered.
It wasn’t a command, it sounded more like a request. Of course, Sayori complied.
Strangely enough, Monika began to sing. It was a wordless song, but a captivating melody.
As fast as the song began, it stopped. A selfish part of Sayori wished it could have been longer, but bringing Monika to herself was already pretty selfish.
“Open,” Monika whispered again. Sayori did as such.
“Tada!” Monika cheered, pointing her arm out at a plate of cream-coloured biscuits on an oval metal tray. She was smiling and the biscuits seemed to almost be glowing.
Sayori blinked. And then she blinked again. “It was so silly, but you did it anyway.”
No. She could not start crying now!
Monika placed a hand on Sayori’s shoulder and she used the other hand to wipe the human’s eyes.
“Remember the other thing you asked for?” Monika removed her finger from under Sayori’s eye, instead resting it on her cheek.
“Y…yeah?” Sayori mumbled. “What about-”
Before Sayori could finish her question, Monika leaned in and softly kissed her.
The kiss lasted longer than the song, but it had to end as well.
“There it is.”
