Kate Joyner ‘dies’ after the attacks. Her back is broken in several places and she had lost enough blood to be near death. Elle Greenaway of course comes to her aide in secret, giving several infusions worth of matched blood. She’s still there when Kate is allowed to go home.
“Why did you… stay?”
“I know how it is to be used up and thrown away….”
Elle speaks softly.
“Besides, you’ll need someone to keep you company and I’m getting tired of being alone.”
Later, much later, Kate sleeps safely tucked in Elle’s arms and smiles, she is safe, loved, protected at last.
