How does Lucy find out about New York & other missing moments

Notes:

I did really feel like this was a great episode and it really wasn't missing much so here are a few little moments. (Also I'm on Xmas holidays now so I will TRY MY BEST to get the rest of season 2 up before Christmas Day! I really want to finish this up before the new year!)

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

SSN 2 Ep 18 – Under the gun

Lucy has bailed on more than one social night I invite from Rachel over the past few weeks and is starting to feel really guilty about it. But now that she’s been getting to know Emmett; who conveniently already knows Tim, she’s been thinking it might be feasible for the four of them to hang out, eventually, maybe. So she texts Rachel to organize a coffee date for the two of them on her day off.

Rachel sits down at the table and Lucy can tell something is off.

“Hey, what’s going on? Are you okay?” Lucy asks.

“I’m fine, I’m good,” she insists as she fidgets with her hands on top of the table.

“You’re lying,” Lucy says, “and it’s illegal to lie to a cop,” she says smiling.

“Okay, fine Officer Chen,” she jokes, “I had a job interview, for my dream job, and I got it,” Rachel tells her unable to help the smile that spreads across her face.

“Rachel!” Lucy squeals, “That’s amazing.”

“It is, but it’s not in LA,” she says solemnly.

“Oh, where is it?” Lucy asks.

“New York.”

“New York,” Lucy repeats, “wow, that’s definitely not in LA. Have you told Tim?”

“Not yet, I will, I need to, It’s just things have been going so well and I really like him.”

“I’m sorry. Maybe he’ll go to New York, who knows, he could see it as a fresh start,” Lucy suggests trying her best to sound optimistic.

“Ya, or he’ll dump me and hate me and never speak to me again,” Rachel says matter-of-factly.

“Or that,” Lucy says know it’s the more likely option.

Tim is an LA native and although she hasn’t known the man a year yet she has a feeling LA is very much his home, like it is hers.

Lucy gets in the shop with Tim and can already tell he’s more grumpy than usual. So without him looking she texts Rachel and gets the response she’s expecting. She told him about New York.

“You know, a long distance relationship could be possible, or you could always look into the NYPD,” Lucy suggests once they are back in the shop and headed back to the station.

“Or we could not talk about this and get back to work,” Tim says.

“Well if you change your mind, I’m a great listener, and occasionally give excellent advice,” Lucy says smiling.

“Thanks, I will not be taking you up on that,” he says attempting to diminish her constant positivity.

“She what?” Lucy asks when Tim comes to give her an update on Rachel and their case.

“She threw water at the guy, and they may or may not have arrested her,” he says.

“Rachel? My Rachel? Your Rachel? Your girlfriend is a felon,” she says even though she knows it’s a stretch.

“She’s not a felon,” he says rolling his eyes at Chen’s ridiculous accusation, “now do you want to come with us to fix this or not?” he asks.

“You mean the thousand favours you called in actually paid off?” she jokes.

“Yes, of course, because I did the calling, now come on, let’s go boot,” Tim instructs.

Tim feels pretty bad for Rachel after the day she’s had so he invites her over to his place the next evening with the promise of an excellent homemade meal. The news of her moving to New York has left him a bit off balance but he’s trying to focus on the time they have left together. They manage to get through dinner without mentioning the new job but he feels obligated to be honest with her She doesn’t deserve any false home from him.

“So, I talked to Grey about what moving to New York would look like, just to see,” he tells her as he starts loading he dishwasher.

“Really?” she asks as her face lights up.

“I did, and it’s not exactly a lateral move,” he tells her.

“Okay, so what does that mean?”

“It means,” Tim says as he comes around the kitchen island to sit on the stool next to her, “it means the NYPD is a totally different beast. I’d have to start all over again. Go back to the Academy be a rookie; my twelve years as a cop would mean nothing,” he tells her.

“Oh,” Rachel says as she lets that sink in, “So no New York for you.”

“No, Rachel, I’m sorry. LA is my home, Mid-Wilshire is my home, and it’s not something I’m ready to leave, especially considering I just got my life back on track. I mean I’m on my way to getting a Sargent’s position, I don’t want to give that up,” he tells her hoping the truth won’t hurt too much.

“Thank you for being honest with me,” she says as she gives his hands a squeeze, “but I should get going,” she says as she stands up from her stool.

“Really? You don’t have to, I thought maybe I could help you narrow down a few neighbourhoods,” Tim offers.

“Really?” Rachel asks surprised by the gesture.

“Ya, I mean I can’t have you living in an area with a high crime rate,” he says smiling.

Notes:

I also love that in this Ep Lucy says she has no idea what Tim is thinking about New York/Rachel moving but then fast forward to season 5 when she's with Isabel and says she's got him all figured out! :)
