Work Text:
“Let’s call it a night, yeah?” Kei says, biting back a yawn, he nudges Kageyama’s arm, and he looks at Kei. “Algebra can wait for tomorrow.”
“Mmh,” Kageyama nods, placing his pencil down on the table, and stretches. “Do you want anything to eat? There’s supposed to be food in the fridge.”
“Sure,” Kei agrees easily, he’s not going to pass up spending extra time with Kageyama.
Kageyama's lips quirked up into a smile, and he headed to the kitchen and motioned for Kei to follow. However, his smile leaves when he opens the fridge and finds it empty, save for bottles of water. “Oh god, I forgot to visit the supermarket this week.”
Kei scoffs, a bit amused considering Kageyama is never one to forget about things like this. “How did you manage that?”
“Because of you! Take some responsibility, you had me distracted this week!” Kageyama accuses, and Kei looks at him, bewildered.
“Huh? How’s it my fault?”
“You know why...” Kageyama trails off, faint blush colours his cheeks.
Oh, ohhhhh. Oh. Yes, it hits Kei like a ton of bricks. Kageyama was, in fact, distracted by Kei. From Kei’s disastrous confession a couple weeks ago, to them spending most of their free time sneaking around together. Very distracting, indeed.
They have yet to tell their friends about it though, this development is something new, not entirely fragile, but they didn’t want to go completely public yet, even if everyone already thinks they’re dating. Kei is certain Yachi knows because yesterday she was telling Kei about these perfect hangout (see: date) spots in Sendai, and when Kei asked her why, she just smiled and said “no reason.”
“W-Whatever. Let's go to the convenience store, King, my treat.” Kei tries to hide the fact his face is also aflame.
“Tsukishima, you don't have to –”
“Can’t I treat my boyfriend to a convenience store meal now?” Kei interjects. The word boyfriend rolls off his tongue easily, Kei fights back the urge to blush.
That causes Kageyama to get even redder, cute.
“F-Fine. But I’m paying for us next time!”
“Sure, sure. Now lead the way, King.” Kei holds back on teasing Kageyama further.
They bundled up in their jackets and headed out of Kageyama’s place. The coolness of the night wasn’t too harsh, the sky was clear, and the moon hung high in the sky, casting a dreamy glow to everything around them.
It illuminated Kageyama most dazzlingly, Kei couldn’t look away. The redness still hadn’t faded from his cheeks, he walked closely next to Kei, their shoulders bumping occasionally. When they finally arrived, Kageyama had to snap his fingers to get Kei’s attention.
“Hello, earth to Tsukishima?” Kageyama waves his hands in front of Kei's face.
“I’m here, I’m here,” Kei recovers quickly, “Pick out anything you want.”
Kageyama flashes Kei another smile, more mischievous this time. God.
They leave the store with a bag filled with various snacks, a couple of sandwiches, milk, and two of Kageyama’s beloved pork buns.
“I don’t wanna go home yet...” Kageyama says quietly, they were nearing the park not too far from Kageyama’s home. The I don’t want you to leave part of Kageyama’s confession goes unsaid, but Kei understands. “Do you want to sit in the park and eat?”
“Of course, anything for his majesty,” Kei says, unable to stop the affection from seeping into his voice.
They took up temporary residence on one of the picnic benches, Kageyama immediately going to eat his pork buns while Kei reached for one of the egg salad sandwiches. It’s nice like this, just sitting together and eating, with nothing but the moon to keep them company.
“The sky looks just like that night, don’t you think?” Kageyama asks, his head upturned to the stars. “I’m glad. That you confessed, even if it was on accident. Hinata was going to force me to confess if we didn’t get our act together.”
Kei still remembers that night vividly, Kei was walking Kageyama to the bus stop near his home, Kei didn’t know what possessed him that night, maybe it was the moon, or the fact Kage had brought Kei all his favourite snacks. But the words just came tumbling out, Kageyama looked breathtaking under the gentle glow of the moon, and Kei couldn’t hold himself back, and confessed. He almost couldn’t believe Kageyama confessed back, sharing that he felt the same way as Kei.
They both agree to keep their relationship on the down low for a bit, so they can familiarise themselves with this new dynamic without worrying about shifting their friend group and team dynamic. It was surprising how easy it was, dating Kageyama, how he and Kageyama just fit together, it was like them getting together was destined. Not that Kei would ever tell Kageyama he thought like that.
Kei can’t help but laugh. “Yamaguchi too. He still thinks we're hopelessly pining. When do you want to tell them?”
Kageyama faces Kei, hesitantly placing his hand on top of Kei’s. “Soon, Yachi is on to us, she’s been giving me knowing smiles in between breaks. I wanna enjoy the peace for a bit more.”
“Oh my god, Yachi has been giving me all sorts of date ideas, we really can’t hide anything from her,” Kei laces their fingers together, heart overflowing with affection. “But me too, I wanna make them wait a while longer.”
They can deal with the teasing later, but right now all Kei wants to do is spend as much time with Kageyama, be it sneaking away at lunch to go to the roof, or with the moon as their only witness.
(Two weeks later:
“I knew it, I knew it!” Yachi exclaims, “I always saw you two sneaking up to the roof when you guys thought no one was looking.”
Kei wants the ground to swallow him whole and, Kageyama sputters, “We never did that!”
“Then Tsukki, why did you miss class that one day?” Yamaguchi asks with an eyebrow raised.
And Hinata, adding more fuel to the fire, “That’s why you missed class, Bakayama??!!”
“To be fair, it was just a one-time thing…” Kei lamely defends.
“We literally caught you two sneaking to the roof just now,” Yachi says, unimpressed. “And don’t think we’re not telling Tanaka-senpai and the others, we’re not letting you two get a minute of rest! I need details!”
“Yeah, we need details!” Yamaguchi and Hinata demands.
Kei ignores their nosy friends for a second and grabs Kageyama’s hand, their short-lived peace may be over but he’s glad their friends are the ones to find out first. And on the plus side, Kei and Kageyama get to annoy them with their PDA now. Hehe.)
