Work Text:

In the mysterious land of Toronto, Canada... Scott was travelling through his subspace highway, reflecting on the latest events. Him and Ramona had had certain fantastical encounters with people from their pasts. People with an awful impact on their love lives that they decided to brush off. And there only seemed to be more waiting for them. Scott kept skating mindlessly, when he felt a voice call for him. A voice that was too familiar. One that announced to his brain that he had travelled too far.

As the iconic star door that was supposed to give him home as his next destination opened, his sight went upwards, and Scott didn't process where he was, but rather, who he was with. He tripped, the roller skates hitting the concrete floor making an awful metallic sound, all wheels spinning chaotically in synch. Scott frowned, looking up ashamed. His gaze was focused on Wallace's resentful expression, painted with a pair of black stripes covering his eye bags. Yet the most striking things about his past roommate were the new half-ninja look, the whip sword on his left hand and the many band aids decorating his arms and legs.

"...You're here sooner than I thought" said the new apparent enemy to defeat, staring at the mess that was Scott, standing up and taking out his baseball bat. He started swinging it in the air, as to claim space to get prepared for whatever was coming.

"Wha- What do you mean by that? Was this planned?!-" "Scott. You think you've only had one bad relationship to solve? You've always thought about Envy, but you invalidate whatever happened with Kim, then there's Knives... and now, it should be my turn." Oh, right. This is Scott's League of Evil exes. They're all connected, and expecting something. But the bat kept swinging, prepared to attack.

Turns out that the two were setting up their scandal in front of the Happy Avocado, hitting only the air as their weapons went back and forth, sometimes crossing paths, others dodging each other. Scott was planning to defend himself until he found the door again, skating backwards as Wallace only seemed to skate closer and closer to hit him. "So you were looking for me??" "Ever since you left without a word? Yeah, you could say so. Now stop backing away and face the problem for once!" yelled Wallace, his neutral tone changing, but in the middle of the aggression there was familiarity, like those days where he gave Scott loyal advice. "Is this how you reacted to the rest of the girls? You haven't changed." "Is this your way of saying you're still in love with me or something?!"

"Maybe I am. And maybe I am holding back!" he smirked, only to be hit with the hammer Scott took out of his purse.

"Cough-! You're not planning to just turn me into coins, are you, Scott? After, well, everything."
"I don't know what you even want from me! I left for Rammy. I had to, I would've been dead weight in the apartment anyway! ...Plus, you aren't even an ex!!"
"Oh, aren't I?" and before Scott could see the door in the sidewalk, Wallace pushed him, and they fell through the subspace with their weapons in the air. Scott had the door in mind as an escape, but right now he couldn't predict where they would end up together. A loud slam noise announced there was no escape, but rather a destination to confront. College.

Scott looked around, fixing his hair quickly and in shock; the place hadn't changed much. They were right next to it. Before he stood up, Wallace got on top of him and raised his arms in the air with the titanium baseball bat about to hit, grinning victoriously. Scott's upper body went up as he took the chance to punch Wallace from the chin and up, making now the other fall to the ground and taking the chance to steal HIS weapon. Except he didn't know how to use the whip, missing any possible hits.

"After hitting on you for so long here, you can't even hit me." "Ha, ha. So funny, Wallace. Give me back the bat! There's nothing to talk about here!"

"Nothing?" Wallace stood up, letting the bat go and stopping Scott by grabbing him by the wrists. "What about all the drunk talks? All the... "

"...All the kisses?" "Kissi- Huh." "You suppressed that from your memory too? Like with Envy?"
"Even if that happened- that doesn't count! We were always roommates, we had nothing going on! Right? It was just... kinda gay..." Wallace frowned and sighed in frustration, but Scott escaped his hands and pulled away.

"I didn't do that with you. I was just... 'curious' or drunk that night, maybe??" "It wasn't just one night. And it wasn't just college." Wallace became a bit unhinged, trying to hit Scott only to be grabbed by the shoulders as their foreheads touched with strength.

"Oh? You want another kiss so bad." "Wallace-!" And practically headbutting him, Scott pushed Wallace through the door, opening it again. But Wallace grabbed him by the star purse, and they ended up falling together once more.

SLAM! The last destination of their journey. Home. Or, what they called it together during those times. When Wallace gave any excuse to just be with Scott. When Scott relied on him and only him.

"...No one lives here? After we-" "After you left."

They had left their weapons behind. Scott could try to grab them back from the purse, but he didn't. He only looked at Wallace, and offered him a hand to stand up.

"...I should have told you."
"Told me what? That you liked me and you pretended to forget it? That you..."
"...That after every time you had my back, all the time we spent together, all of what we had going on... was not something I should have left behind. Like it was nothing. That I can't pretend to be a victim anymore."

"..." Wallace finally stood up, but immediately let go of Scott's hand. "That you're a bitch, too?"
Scott tried to look offended, but he chuckled. "Maybe. Yeah. I was a whole jerk. I still am. I'm... sorry. For me."
"Why couldn't you face me sooner? You used to... Tell me everything. Scott, I know you too well. You wouldn't avoid this. Well, maybe. But you get me."
"...It was a pain to say goodbye to you."

When Scott finally exclaimed that, Wallace's eyes went wide. His roller skates took him near Scott. He then had to take a moment to look around. The walls, the floor, it all used to have their stuff. Mostly Wallace's.

Scott kept going. "You're not an evil ex."
"Yeah. I'm not even an ex. You said so already."
"You're not bad, you're more than just a failed relationship, Wallace. And... I lied. It did mean a lot. All of it. I just tried to suppress it." Silence. "You remember now? Tell me, then. How did you feel back then, really?... You weren't just oblivious..." it seemed hard for both now to bring up their 'quite gay meeting'. Or the rest of it, after everything. Scott just couldn't respond, being conflicted by the memories and emotions, being in the place that used to be theirs. "Do you hate me?" Scott asked out of nowhere. "No. Yes. It's complicated now. Fighting you didn't help. Just a little bit."

And Scott moved forward, getting a bit closer to Wallace's cheek, only to give it a soft, tender peck. "...Is that the correct answer for... how I felt?" He looked like a mess right now. His conflicted expression revealed his hopes of giving Wallace some sort of closure with that action. Wallace touched his own face, and looked at him, his gaze softening. Before Wallace could get close again, Scott interrupted: "I'm happy with Ramona. Man, I would have not liked it if she had fought you instead of me. I guess I had to see you myself finally." "So we aren't making out?" insisted Wallace, in a playful tone. He was both coping with what he had just heard with a spice of humor, but also bringing back the teasing from the old days on purpose.

"Nope, we don't have to." "Ow." "But I promise not to deny what happened anymore. Wallace... thank you, for everything." Wallace put his hand on Scott's shoulder: "You are one big jerk. It's not all forgiven. But I didn't have much of a reason to be in the League in the first place. I knew you'd learn to apprecciate me more eventually" and he smirked. "Wallace. You really liked me, didn't you?" "You're dumber than I thought." "No, no, like really. Stuff happened. I felt... sparks. Though I ignored them, like a coward. But, did you too?" Scott looked away saying this, fixing his hair. It was then when Wallace understood Scott was giving him a sincere opportunity to be fully relieved of the whole situation, and have a space to express his feelings.

"...Every single time. And even if we acted like nothing happened and stayed close, I couldn't help it. It was massive; it's embarrassing now."
"It's okay." "Making out with random guys doesn't compare, you know. Though it's great. I'm really living. But nothing compares to... what we had those days. I guess I can move on now that I know it wasn't just mistaken belief of mine." Scott had a sweet grin, one contagious for his past roommate.

Now that they knew what they had was relatively real, that they both had seen the shiny dots in the air at the time but not exactly done anything about it and moved on... It had them blushing, yet with a bittersweet feeling. At least, Wallace took initiative for a hug. Scott raised an eyebrow, surprised at this. But he thought maybe this would be the last time they see each other in a while. And he had to say bye this time. So, he embraced his 'old friend', feeling a sigh of relief like a warm breeze on his shoulder.

Meanwhile, Ramona was in her house with Roxie, discussing where Scott could even be. He wasn't responding to any texts. Roxie quickly got tired. "See, this is why I never approve of your boyfriends." "No, no. I'll just call him. Maybe he... bumped into an ex by himself. Oh, no."

And immediately Scott took out the phone from his bag, right after separating from Wallace. The tone he used for Ramona was soft and endearing, as if this whole fight had led him to missing her like a puppy. Wallace noticed this while Scott explained a vague generalization of the recent fight. Even if he still felt a bit bad knowing he wasn't the one Scott ever talked to that way, he had reasons to be more at peace with him and himself now, and be happier for their relationship. Seeing him wave goodbye as he was always mean to, only made half-ninja Wallace's heart relieved. The most he's felt in a while. The star door closed, with Scott's roller skate wheels spinning and his mouth saying "I won't forget us, ever again" before crossing. Cheesy and epic, as usual.

After processing for some seconds, Wallace finally grabbed the door knob. But the other side wasn't functioning as the subspace now. He only found the real world, and himself, all by himself. But, for once, it felt like a good thing.
