Work Text:

It was light in the room, although Ada could have sworn the blinds and curtains had been closed the night before. Emil was curled up against her like a blanket, snoring softly against her chest and sleeping peacefully for the first time in at least a week. She smiled down at her lover, and yes, they were married - but she couldn't help that fuzzy feeling growing in her chest when she saw how content he looked. She gently rubbed his back, whispering his name softly to wake him up. When his eyes fluttered open, he let out a soft grunt and just pressed his face into her shoulder, obviously not interested in getting out of bed yet.

Ada chuckled and sighed. "Emil, baby, it's time to get up. It's Christmas Eve, you know." She said and kissed the top of his head, helping him sit up. Emil kept his body close to hers, looking up at her as if he was asking for just a few more minutes. Ada did not relent, knowing how much they had to get done still. Hell, they hadn't even put up the tree yet!

"Ada..Please?" He said softly, his tone gentle and sleepy.

"No, dear. We have so much to do today." Was her answer, as she climbed out of bed and opened the curtains, lifting the blinds to look out of the window. To her surprise, there was a bright blanket of snow covering the ground, and small flakes were dancing in the air before each one joined the rest on the ground. Emil stood and walked over, his eyes sparkling with curiosity. "Snow?" He whispered.

Ada nodded. "A shame," She sighed. "That means the roads won't be cleared in time for us to grab the last ingredients."

Emil blinked, and his curiosity melted away as it was replaced with a remorseful frown. "I'm sorry," He said and looked at her, swallowing and rubbing his eyes. Ada shook her head and quickly told him it wasn't his fault - what could he possibly do about snowfall? Nothing.

"Let's find some warm clothes, and I'll kick on the small heater in the living room. We can put together the tree, perhaps?" She asked.

Emil nodded. "If that's what you want." He responded.

After they were dressed, Ada lead Emil to the living room. She could have sworn he had warmer clothes, yet she could find nothing that was warm enough for the harsh conditions outside. So she wrapped a blanket around him and giggled, noticing his confused expression. She kissed his nose. "It's just to keep you warm until we can go to the store. You've been gaining weight, so most of your clothes from before don't fit. But that's a good thing, remember? You were so skinny before, I'm so proud of the progress you're making." She reminded him, to which he smiled at her. He was secretly proud of himself, too, but he didn't know how to express it like he wanted to.

"Alright, I'll go and drag out the tree, if you'll help me find the lights?" She asked with a smile. Emil reluctantly agreed, but Ada put a hand on his arm, sensing something was wrong. "What is it?" She said softly as Emil looked around nervously. "There's so many lights..." He muttered under his breath.

Ada tilted her head. "Do you think so?" She said, and thought for a second. "Well, I suppose you're right. Hm...Then it's settled. I know what we can do." She smiled and took her hands in his. She then frowned.

"Hey, hey," She whispered as she noticed he was starting to get overwhelmed. "Eyes on me, my love. Deep breaths, we won't do the tree, okay? I have something else we can do." She guided his head to her chest, stroking his hair to calm him. Emil closed his eyes and took a breath, wrapping his arms around her. His touch was gentle, as if she were a fragile doll. A fragile doll he loved, and was afraid to break. Ada's heart warmed, smiling softly. "That's it, you're alright." She comforted him.

Once he was calmed again, She walked towards the kitchen, and he followed quietly. "I was going to wait a while, because we had so much to do, but I feel that now is a better time instead." She talked as she moved around the kitchen, pulling out different ingredients, such as flour, sugar, and eggs. Emil watched, unable to keep his eyes off of her. After spending years with each other, the both of them were just as in love with the other as they had been the first day they met.

Ada preheated the oven, and started to mix the different things together. Emil stood next to her, tapping the counter awkwardly. He bit his lip, eyeing what she was doing. He wanted to help, but was a bit afraid to ask. Ada smiled and took his hand, placing the whisk in his grasp. "You just mix all this stuff together, okay? Go as slow as you need." She said and showed him the motion. He did what he was shown, looking at her for approval and growing a bit more confident as she nodded her head.

The two of them put the cookie dough on the baking sheet, and once they were done, Ada smiled at her lover. "You did great, Emil. I'm proud of you." She put a hand on his cheek, running her thumb over his soft skin. Emil melted into her embrace, as he always did. Ada found it endearing, the way he loved her. He was always so polite and gentle, and just loved any attention from her at all. He was in no way different from when she had started to establish their relationship, aside from healing mentally, which she was of course so happy and proud of him for. She promised she would always be there for him, and so she was.

With the cookies laid out, Ada showed Emil how to put the sheets in the oven. Emil grabbed one of the sheets while Ada helped him, though one cookie that had been placed too close to the edge was in just enough range for his thumb to press into the dough, leaving a fingerprint. Ada grinned slightly, and stopped him for a second, pressing her thumb into the dough as well.

Sometimes it was alright to take a day for themselves.
