“I don’t think you’re a bad man,” she murmurs after a long pause. “I think you’re someone who could form bonds. Real ones. Perhaps not with me. But someone.”
He doesn’t answer. Can’t. If he opens his mouth again, it’ll just be more yelling.
“When you do,” she adds, “when someone reputable is willing to vouch for you—I’d like you to return. And we’ll try again.”
The silence that follows is heavy.
Richard shoves himself to his feet, staggering to the door without another word. He rips it open.Emil startles at the noise. And then, when he sees Richard’s face, has the gall to relax.
Richard glares at him.
Gods, he’s going to kill them. Both of them.
But he’s not getting on that damned carriage.
