He couldn't believe it....
He simply couldn't believe it when his engineer yelled at him through the radio:
"George Russell, you're the world champion!!!!"
He does remember yelling back. A string of words that probably didn't make much sense. A couple of 'blimey's' thrown in there.
He's sure they'll forgive him for that.
He's world champion after all.
The tough battles, with highs and lows, had paid off.
Shutting down the engine in parc fermé felt like a dream.
If he'd glanced over at the pitlane, he'd see his engineer and Toto being ecstatic. But all he could do was just hold his head, still with his helmet on, in his hands for a while, shaking his head in disbelief.
He could, however, hear the roar of the other engineers who were still hanging on the railing, now running towards him.
He felt himself practically being lifted out of the car by his engineers.
His hands and legs were shaking. He was just glad these men were giving him some kind of stability.
He was just going through the motions. Receiving back pats and congratulations from everywhere. He didn't even know where to look first.
That's when he realized that the was still wearing his helmet and balaclava.
Still shaking hands went up to remove them. He held both items out, not really looking, and waited for someone to take them from him. Luckily he didn't have to wait long.
Once he was free of those 'restrictions' he shook his head, carding his fingers through his helmet messed up hair.
That's when he feels it. The eyes on him.
His head shoots up and turns in every which way, trying to find the source of that stare.
Then he spots him, the man making his way over to him.
George gently, but firmly, pushes his way forward to meet him halfway and before he knows it, he's scooped up in the smaller man's arms.
"Lewis," he breathes, lost for any other words than his name.
His hero. His teammate. His - - - -
"I'm so proud of you, George. So deserved."
Later George might blame it on all of the adrenaline rushing through him, but honestly, it's the only thing he wants to do in that moment.
He pulls back a little, cups Lewis' cheek in his hand and before the older Brit can even try to formulate any kind of word, George kisses him.
He doesn't even hear the people in the stands going wild, nor the hollering of the other drivers and some of the Mercedes engineers. Even Toto has a little amused smirk on his face.
He feels Lewis stiffen, but then he's kissing him back and George knows he might not have fucked things up.
Cameras are flashing but he pays them no mind.
When he feels Lewis' hand gently squeeze his hip, he pulls his head back a little, staring at plump lips and emotion filled brown eyes.
George bites his bottom lip, "I'm sorry. I just - - - - I couldn't stop myself."
Lewis smiles, "It's okay. I didn't want to keep it a secret anymore anyway."
George's face splits into a grin and he kisses Lewis again, wrapping his arms around his neck.
After the kiss ends, he keeps his arms wrapped around Lewis' neck, throws his head back and yells at the sky.
"Blimey. I'm world champion, baby!"
