In the dead of the night, Mika's eyes were wide open and focused. Crimson gaze scanned the area for any signs of movement. If he was not happy with what he became, it got perks. Mika could see for miles. It was quiet, but he was ready for everything. The vampire's ears picked up the faintest sounds of the night: the rustle of leaves, the wind, and the chirping of crickets. Nothing unusual.
Mika didn't know how long he sat there, alert and unmoving, when he caught a new sound. At first, it was light, booming, repetitive noise, but he couldn't identify it for sure. The door opened and Mika shifted position to face the threat. There was none. Standing in the doorway was Yuu, and Mika realized what he heard was his heartbeats.Without the obstacle, the booming heart was much more noticeable.
Mika's nostrils flared at Yuu's scent. He could feel the start of a hunger stir within him. His throat suddenly felt really dry.
“Yuu-chan, why are you up?” he said, trying to act nonchalant. “Go back to sleep.”
“I can't sleep, so I'm keeping you company.”
It was not good. He wanted to drink Yuu's blood. Mika took a deep breath and tried to calm himself down. Yuu sat next to him.
“You need your sleep.”
“I don't want to leave you alone and lonely.”
The dryness in Mika's throat was occupying the biggest part of his brain. He could feel his fangs elongating. Mika tried to focus on something else, anything else, but couldn't.
A hand reached for his throat and he rubbed it, almost unconsciously, movements desperate.
“Hey, Mika?”
Mika thought Yuu caught on to his discomfort, but when he looked over, Yuu was gazing upwards, his head tilted back.
“The stars are so beautiful,” Yuu said with a smile.
Mika followed Yuu's gaze and saw the stars shining brilliantly in the night sky like many times diamonds.
Mika was grateful for the distraction, even though his thirst was slowly rising. His hand was not leaving his throat, his movements more desperate. To his relief, Yuu had yet to notice. Yuu continued to stare at the stars, and seemed to wait for Mika's response.
“They are,” Mika replied. “I didn't have the chance to watch them in Sanguinem.”
In the underground city, there were no stars or moon, just an infinite blue. It was only a fake sky, one they could stand under even when it was sunny outside. The view didn't compare to seeing the sky.
“Did you feel lonely? All this time alone with the vampires?”
“I am a vampire. I thought you knew that.”
“That's not the question. Did you miss me as much as I missed you?”
Mika’s growing thirst occupied his mind, but he pushed it aside.
“Because I missed you. What did I think when we met in Shinjuku? That I was glad that you were alive. Even if you drink my blood, you’re here, and not just an illusion from my demon.”
“I did. I missed you too.”
Despite the torment Yuu's scent and heartbeat caused him, he yearned for Yuu's actual presence more than anything.
Yuu turned his head. Their eyes met.
“I never thought I would like red eyes, but it’s you so I don't mind.”
Mika's attention involuntarily shifted towards Yuu's neck, lingering there.
“Oh! Mika, you…”
Yuu grabbed Mika's hand from his throat. With a gentle gaze, Yuu squeezed Mika's hand.
“You need it now, right?”
Mika stared at Yuu's neck without a word. He gulped down.
“You want to drink my blood.”
Yuu inched closer. The word “blood” rang in Mika’s ears.
“I'm fine,” Mika said.
He was agitated but tried to not let it show.
“Go… Go to sleep, Yuu-chan.”
Yuu shook his head.
“No, we can't ignore your thirst, Mika. I don't want you to suffer in silence, Mika. Let me help you.”
His touch gentle, Yuu guided Mika's hand to his neck, tracing the vein. Yuu's skin was searing, and Mika felt the vein pulse under his fingertips. His vampire body craved it.
“I will give it to you,” Yuu whispered. “Take all the blood you need.”
Mika's eyes widened in surprise at Yuu's words.
“Yuu-chan…”
He never thought human heat would be so intoxicating. Mika forced his hand out of Yuu's grip, moving it to his shoulder. As he tried to push himself away, Yuu held him close to his body. Yuu's thumping heart pounded against his still chest.
“No, Mika. Don't push me away. I want to help you. Let me be there for you.”
One of Yuu’s arms slid behind Mika’s back, keeping him close. His free one brushed in his hair.
“Mika, I won't make you do it if you really don't want to. But I want to help you.”
“I want to… drink it.”
“I know, and I want you to.”
As Mika moved closer to Yuu's exposed neck, Yuu whispered in Mika's ear:
“It's okay, Angel. Just relax.”
When he let go of the tension in his body, Mika closed his eyes and let his lips brush against Yuu's neck. Mika drank for about a minute and pulled back to look at Yuu. The other, still smiling gently, wiped Mika's mouth with his thumb.
“There, there, all better, no?”
He chuckled softly as he caressed Mika's cheek. Mika felt them heat up and moved away from Yuu, sitting next to him but avoiding his gaze.
“So, are you… going back to sleep?”
“No. I told you, I'm keeping you company. Besides, I can sleep here.”
As if to prove his point, Yuu laid his head on Mika's shoulder.
“I'm not exactly warm, you know.”
Even after a blood intake, Mika's body was as cold as the current weather outside.
“I don't mind,” Yuu said. “You're right here. I'm comfortable enough.”
One of Yuu's arms snaked around Mika's waist, pulling him close.
“Look, Mika! A shooting star! Let's make a wish!”
“That's so silly, but if I could wish for something…”
Only one thing came to his mind.
“I wish to be human again and grow old with Yuu-chan and everyone.”
“Mika… You shouldn't tell your wish to someone. Now it won’t come true.”
“But it will. After all, Yuu-chan will make it real, right?”
“Yeah. I promise. In return, I want you to promise me something.”
“What?”
“Stay with me.”
“I always planned to.”
“Good! I want to keep having you by my side. I don't want to be apart from you ever again.”
