Reader is in love with Norton, maybe was the child of a rich man. Father dies, they inherited everything. Offers to give it all to Norton is he'll marry them. They it's one-sided but they'll take what they can get. He dislikes them because rich, obviously, but is a little confounded by the apparent earnestness of their feelings. (He can't see some scheme behind this. Giving everything to him, all the power, all the money? He thinks there has to be a catch but there's definitely not one that makes sense.)
