A Change in Plans

Summary:

Kara has the perfect wedding proposal planned. However, outside forces altered what she had in mind.

Work Text:

Kara stood staring at a blue sunflower print dress that she had in her closet. It was the same dress that she wore on her first date with Lena. She smiled when she thought about it. She was so nervous about botching everything. However, the night went perfectly. They held hands while they walked to the park and had a picnic near the lake. It ended with them wrapped in a blanket watching the sunset set. The sun setting over the lake caused the lake to turn into beautiful hues of pinks, blues, and purples. It was as breathtaking as watching the marvel across Lena’s face.

Today was their one year anniversary and she wanted to recreate that date with Lena, but with a twist. Hidden in the picnic basket, she had an engagement ring and bracelet. Sam and Alex had been spies for her and told Kara the engagement rings that Lena had been looking at when she didn’t think anyone was noticing. She was able to get it from Lena’s favorite jeweler several days ago. It was a pink heart-shaped diamond ring with a silver band. She had inscribed inside the band: You are my heart and soul. Now and forever. She went to the Fortress of Solitude to have Kelex recreate the wedding bracelet her mom had. It nearly made her tear up thinking about it. The bracelet had her family’s crest surrounded by gold. Wedding bracelets hold a special meaning in Kryptonian culture. Not only was it an announcement of your love, but it was showing the world that you wanted to spend eternity with that special someone. It was very significant because marriage in Krypton was not something that was taken lightly since divorce was heavily frowned upon. Only a couple of people in Kryptonian history have done so. Kara couldn’t wait to put the bracelet around Lena’s wrist. They had about an hour before she had to leave to pick up her custom-order picnic basket from Noonan’s, place the ring and bracelet inside the basket, and then take Lena to the park, but Kara was a bundle of energy. She thought about going patrolling to burn off some steam but changed her mind when she smelt something pleasant coming from outside the room. She followed the smell until she got to the kitchen. She smiled when she saw Lena in the kitchen taking out a tray of cookies.

Kara bounced over to her smiling and exclaimed, “I didn’t know that you were making cookies!”

She looked at the cookies further and noticed they were her favorite: Reese’s peanut butter cookies. Each cookie was several inches high with a soft center.

While her mouth watered, she said, “You made my favorite.”

Lena smiled, caressed her face, and said, “It is a special day, and I wanted to do something special that showed that you mean everything to me.”

Kara smiled and said, “You mean the world to me too.”

Kara leaned to kiss Lena. Kara wrapped her arms around her and Lena leaned into the embrace. They kissed for a couple of moments until they heard a sudden pop. They leaned back, opened their eyes, and saw that they were in darkness.

Before they could say anything else, the lights came back on again.

Kara smirked and said, “I guess our love nearly overloaded the electricity.”

Lena chuckled while swatting playfully at Kara’s arm and said, “You are incorrigible.”

Kara smirked and said, “You know you love it.”

Lena smirked and said, “Always.”

Lena leaned forward and kissed Kara once more. They stayed like that for a couple of moments before Lena pushed herself back. Kara looked up at her pouting.

Lena chuckled and said, “I know you want to keep going, but I want to finish making the cookies. Before they cool off, I need to soak them in the honey mixture that you like so much.”

Kara beamed. She loved the honey glaze that Lena used on the cookies. The Reese’s peanut butter cookies did taste great without it. However, the addition of the glaze brought the cookie up to the top tier.

Kara sighed and said, “I will get out of your way.”

Lena chuckled and said, “I just need 10 minutes and then you can have a cookie.”

Kara smiled and kissed Lena on the cheek.

“Alright, I will just check my work emails for a bit.”

Lena smiled and said, “Perfect.”

Kara bounced out of the room looking for her work computer until she noticed something strange out of the corner of her eye. The door that led to the balcony showed it had ice forming on it. She went towards it, opened the door, and balked at what she saw. There was a full-blown blizzard happening outside. Considering they were near Los Angeles, this was not the norm. She quickly closed the door and called Alex. She answered on the first ring.

“Hello,” said Alex.

“Hey, have you seen what is going on outside?” asked Kara.

Alex sighed and said, “Yes, I see the snow.”

Kara frowned and said, “It is not just snow. It is a snowstorm happening out there. The visibility is so low that I can only see a couple of inches in front of me.”

“I know. We got reports from Metropolis of Superman and the Flash fighting the Weather Wizard. He caused a snowstorm to appear. The Flash and Superman were able to destroy the machine the Weather Wizard was using, but the storm he created was in the atmosphere and has been heading west ever since. It has been losing force believe it or not since traveling. Metropolis got hit with 20 feet of snow. They are predicting here that we will get 8 feet.”

“Is there no way to stop it?”

“No, at this point, it will be waiting for the storm to dissipate on its own. The scientists believe that the storm will peter out around Hawaii in about 8 hours.”

Kara groaned. That nixed the perfect proposal plan she had tonight.

“I know that you had plans with Lena tonight, but maybe you can do the proposal another time.”

Kara sighed, “Maybe.”

They talked a little bit before hanging up the phone. She had been planning for this night for the last month and hated for it to be ruined before it had begun. However, she reminded herself that it could be worse. She smiled when she thought about that Lena and she still had each other. Kara was jostled out of her thoughts by Lena calling for her. She headed to the kitchen and saw Lena smiling back at her.

“The cookies are ready!” exclaimed Lena while holding out a plate with a single cookie.

Kara gave a soft smile while she took the plate. She was happy, but also a little sad because she knew she would have to tell Lena about the change in plans.

Lena looked at her quizzically and asked, “Is there something wrong?”

Kara looked up at her with a soft smile and said, “Nothing terrible happened. I am just a little down because we have to cancel the dinner I had planned for us for tonight. There is a blizzard happening outside right now.”

Lena frowned and asked, “A blizzard? How is that possible?”

Kara sighed and said, “Stupid weather wizard. The Flash and Superman stopped him but not before the storm took hold in the atmosphere. We have to wait a couple of hours to ride the storm out.”

Lena nodded with a thoughtful look on her face.

“That is probably why the lights went out and it was maybe the generator that kicked in,” mused Lena.

Kara chuckled and said, “I thought that it was better when I thought that our love did it.”

Lena chuckled and said, “It would have made for a better story.” Lena took Kara’s hand and guided them to the table where they sat down. She looked up at Kara and said, “I know that we were supposed to go out, but that doesn’t mean we can’t have a good time.”

Kara smiled and said, “You’re right.” She looked down at the cookie and beamed. She looked up at her girlfriend, smiled loving to her, and said, “I have the best girlfriend in the entire world who would make me my favorite treat of all time. I can’t think of anyone better that I would rather be stuck in a snowstorm with.”

Lena smiled blushing and said, “Nor would I.”

Before Kara went in for a bite of the cookie, Lena said quickly, “I would break it apart in the middle.”

Kara looked up quizzically at Lena and asked, “Why?”

Lena chuckled and said, “That is the best way to eat a cookie silly.”

Kara looked at her weirdly for a moment but decided to humor her with the cookie. Who knows. It may make the cookie taste better. As she broke the cookie in half, a ring fell out. It had a red diamond and a gold band. Engraved in the inside the band, it said, “I love you now and forever.”

Kara looked up and was startled to find Lena on one knee holding a bracelet out to her. It was silver with her family’s logo engraved on it.

Lena looked up at her lovingly and said, “Kara, meeting you has been the greatest blessing in my life. Before meeting you, I didn’t think I could trust or be loved by anyone in this world. However, after meeting you, not only have I realized that there are good people in this world, but you showed me that I am not the monster that everyone thinks I am because of my family. Being with you has taught me how to love and that I deserve to be loved. I never knew that I could feel this way about anyone, and I never want this feeling to go away. I want to spend the rest of my life with you, and I hope you feel the same way.”

Kara immediately smiled with tears streaming down her face and instantly pulled Lena into her embrace.

“Of course, I will marry you!”

“Really?” asked Lena smiling with tears streaming down her face.

Kara wiped the tears from Lena’s face and pulled her in to kiss her on the lips. They kissed for a couple of moments before pulling back and leaning up against each other’s head.

“Lena, you are my heart and soul. I can’t think of anyone that I would rather spend the rest of my life with. You are it for me now and forever.”

Lena kissed Kara again for a couple of moments before saying, “I couldn’t agree with you more.”

After kissing for a couple of moments, Lena pulled back and placed the ring and bracelet on Kara’s finger and wrist. Kara looked at both lovingly.

Kara looked back up at Lena and asked, “Do you know what would make this even greater?”

Lena shook her head and asked, “No, what?”

Kara zoomed away and came back a couple of seconds with the ring and bracelet that she had picked out for Lena.

She looked up at Lena and said, “Having these on your finger and wrist.”

Lena smiled and quickly put on the bracelet and ring and looked adoringly at both. She looked up at Kara beaming and asked, “You have been planning a proposal too?

Kara smiled sheepishly while rubbing the back of her neck and said, “I was also going to propose today. I had ordered the custom picnic baskets that Noonan’s sells and was going to take us to the lake where we had our first date.”

Lena smiled while caressing Kara’s face.

“That sounds romantic.”

“It did, but I liked what happened here better,” said Kara smiling.

“Really?” asked Lena.

Kara nodded while pulling Lena into her embrace. She started kissing Lena’s neck gradually which caused her to moan.

“You want to know why I like it better?” asked Kara while still kissing down her neck.

“Why?” gasped Lena.

Kara smirked and said, “Because of the snowstorm, it means that we will be snowed in and off work the next couple of days. Which means….” Kara took off her clothes and stared back down lovingly at Lena. “…that I get to give my new fiancé my most undivided attention.”

Lena looked up at Kara and said excitedly, “I like the sound of that!”

Lena jumped into Kara’s arms and Kara super sped them into the bedroom where they spent the next two days together enjoying each other’s company.
