“Monika look, LOOK!!”
Monika didn’t need to look. She could feel it across her skin, droplets of cold wetness. It wasn’t raining, rain in this area was followed by much more humidity. No, the air was dry, biting, and cold.
It was the very first snow of the season. A good reason for Sayori to gleefully look around, her eyes with an innocent spark of wonder. Monika would have probably waxed more poetic about this moment in her head, as seeing her girlfriend so happy was always something to cherish… but a chill started to creep along her back as she realized-
She was only in her uniform….
Granted, so was Sayori, but she lived right nearby the school. Monika had to walk a fair bit. It wasn’t because of school policy, most people had jackets with them. Rather it was because Sayori was probably rushing and Monika was stubborn.
“10% chance of Snow Storm,” said the weather app. “Eh, I don’t need an extra jacket, it feels fine as is,” said Past Monika.
“Well, crud,” thought Present Monika.
Sayori didn’t seem to be affected by the chill at all, in fact she seemed rather content to let the snowflakes fall on her face, aiming her tongue out.
“Maybe it would be better to have your eyes on the sidewalk, Sayo?” Monika teased, grasping one of Sayori’s arms to lead her away from a pit in the concrete below. Sayori giggled, her face covered in melted snow.
“But it’s been so long since it’s snowed here! I gotta catch up on all the fun classic stuff!”
“Like what, making a snowman?”
“Hmmm well I don’t have carrots at home so I’m not sure…”
“Ahaha I’m sure I could-“
Another chill raced through her body, her hands and limbs feeling more and more stiff. Sayori stopped in her tracks, staring with concern.
“Are you okay hun?”
The small amount of heat from the nickname didn’t seem to help very much as the rest of her body felt the effects of the weather take true form. This is what happened to people who didn’t prepare ahead of time. Now she just had to suck up and deal with it.
“I’m fine… just a little cold but I’m okay…” Monika put on a smile that she hoped would calm any concerns her lover may have had.
From the eyebrow raise she received, it didn’t seem to work… couldn’t blame a girl for trying. Monika curled up in on herself, while Sayori started to… squeeze her arm?
“Uh, Sayori? What are you-“
“Are you not wearing a thermal?” Sayori took hold of her arms and looked through the sleeves. She glanced back up with a gaze that screamed one thing: Monika was going to be subject to much coddling and scolding.
“You gotta walk so far! Do you not have an extra jacket with you in your bag?”
“Um…” The true answer was she didn’t. The lie was… she didn’t have a lie. She was stuck between a worried girlfriend and a cold place. Maybe she could salvage it?
“I’ll be fine, the walk isn’t even that bad-”
The angry eyebrows aimed at her made her know that no, she absolutely did not salvage that.
Sayori clicked her tongue, “You live a mile from here, you’re not walking home like this.” Her grip on Monika’s arm tightened as she made bigger strides across the sidewalk. Monika didn’t attempt to pull away, knowing it would serve to make Sayori even MORE stern with her. A stern Sayori was a scary Sayori, still caring but scary. As Monika gathered some of her bearings she could see what Sayori was walking towards. It was a little difficult as the snow started to thicken up, but she knew that house, it was Sayori’s home.
Sayori loosened her grip on Monika’s arm, turning her book bag in her arms as she searched through the pockets.
“You’re gonna at least come in to warm up AND you’re taking one of my jackets.” Sayori said as she continued to search her bag. Monika went to the zip to the very side, pulling out a pair of keys on a lanyard. Sayori grabbed them from her hands, her scolding gaze turning soft with gratitude. They hurried up the steps, Monika turning towards the rest of the neighborhood.
The snow was getting heavier. The snow was sticking to the ground. The snow wasn’t going to stop any time soon.
“Do you think just a jacket would be enough for the walk?”
“It’s better than what you have now-” Monika tapped at Sayori’s shoulder and pointed towards the growing snow, “... okay so we might need a snow plow….”
A burst of warm air hit the girls as the door was swung open. All of the muscles in Monika’s body relaxed at the warmth. Melting at the feeling of pure comfort… hm. That gave her a good idea.
“Maybe…”
Sayori was half way through the door as she turned and echoed, “Maaaybe…?”
“Well, I don’t HAVE to go home now right? It’s not like your parents are home this week and neither are mine so like- if you’re okay with it-”
No the idea was actually bad, it was time to abort her plan-
Her arm was pulled into the home, Sayori’s giggles warming her more than the central heating. Sayori’s other arm reached to close the door shut on the outside world. Leaving just them in the house alone. Sayori’s previously stern gaze had now melted completely, her eyes sparkling like ice.
“If we’re gonna have a sleepover, then you need to be dressed for it, come on.”
Sayori pulled harder on her arm, and had already taken her shoes off. Monika hopped on her foot as she kicked off her own along with her bookbag, vowing to reorganize them later. The girls hurried up the stairs, Sayori opening the first door to the right.
Monika looked around the familiar room, seeing the usual clutter. Given that this was an impromptu visit, she knew it wasn’t given the usual “oh god someone is coming” cleaning. Sayori would probably call it a mess or gross, but she would call it organized chaos. Somehow Sayori knew EXACTLY where everything was, so if it worked it worked. Monika held her school jacket in her hands, folding it into a square and looking for a place to put them.
“Are you sure any of your clothes can fit me? I’m a little bit wider than you are….”
Sayori’s voice was muffled by virtue of her head shoving itself into a drawer. “We aren’t really that different size wise, besides I got some pants that are really stretchy!”
Said pants that were thrown over her shoulder, being barely caught by Monika before it hit her in the knees. She chuckled lightly, electing to put her jacket on Mr. Cow’s head ( sorry buddy ).
“If you say so honey…”
“I know so-“ Sayori grunted as she stood back up, some sort of scrunched up shirt in her hand, “This shirt is super baggy, it’ll fit just fine! It’s also super cool~”
“Oh?” Monika took the shirt and felt the soft cotton and an imprint material. It would work just fine… and it was Sayori’s. She tried not to let that thought make her too happy (it was making her very happy).
“You’ll see! Now Uh…” Sayori glanced around the room towards the door. Her face turned a slight pink, looking much more awkward than before. “You should change like…,” She motioned out the door, “you know?”
Monika quirked her head in confusion for a second.
The next second heat creeped from her neck to her ears and back.
The next, she was out the door.
—
“Sayori… the shirt is cute and all but I don’t really get it?”
After creating a memory she would never not hear the end of, Monika changed from her uniform in the sweat pants and shirt. Sayori was right, as usual. The pants fit just fine since the elastic was rather forgiving. The shirt though… It was some sort of helmeted figure with red sticks playing the drum? Not something she really recognized.
She could hear a dramatic gasp of shock as she reentered the room, Sayori having queued when it was safe to open the door. Monika didn’t see her face as she continued to analyze the shirt on her.
“Babe that’s Darth Vader, it’s Star Wars!”
Name rang a bell but not for very long. Wasn’t it some sort of tv show people watched? She didn’t really keep up with those besides some cooking shows and Office reruns. She glanced back up at Sayori with a confused smile, stopping at the look she was getting.
It was a bashful look she knew very well considering how often Sayori called HER out on it…
Huh… this could be fun. It wasn’t often Monika got a chance to be the teaser in their relationship. Her smile grew wicked as she tried to keep eye contact with the girl in front of her. The girl who tried to lean as far away from her as possible.
Monika walked forward as she placed herself on the bed right beside Sayori. She leaned in close, tilting her head a bit, “What’s that look for?”
Sayori’s eye shot everywhere but towards Monika, clearly the crack in the plaster above was much more interesting.
“Nothing, it’s nothing, I’m just looking like a normal person!”, said the very blushy ‘normal’ Sayori.
Hmm, she used denial. It wasn’t very effective… time for Monika to use the big guns. Her usual high pitched voice dropped an octave into what she hoped was her voice of confidence.
“Come on, tell me~ You can tell me anything right?”
Okay there was a bit of a voice crack there, but with the reaction of Sayori’s face getting redder, it still seemed to work. Monika dodged to the side as Sayori poked a finger near her cheek.
“No, hey don’t use your flirting as a weapon!” Sayori pushed her whole hand onto Monika’s face, somewhat blocking her vision but not enough to count.
Now it was time for the real deadly trick.
Monika jumped towards Sayori and wrapped her arms around her waist. The girl squirmed in the grip but wasn’t resisting as much as she was expecting. The plan all depended on her next steps…. Monika nuzzled her face towards Sayori’s neck. Her ultimate weakness was cuddling after all.
“But I wanna knooooow, come on~” Monika held Sayori in her arms tighter, rocking back and forward hoping to make her laugh.
“Okay, fine you won!” Sayori chuffed as she finally seemed to face Monika. Her gaze so warm Monika felt her facade start to crack.
Sayori spoke in the tone that was saved for moments like this. The tone that added another crack.
“I really like how you look in my clothes… that’s it really….”
The performance shattered, bringing Monika back to reality. The reality that she was in her girlfriend’s room, in her girlfriend’s clothes, holding her girlfriend, and subsequently probably going to share the bed with said girlfriend. She didn’t know how it took her this long for all of this to catch up to her but once it did it….
“ Oh… ”
Her face never felt so warm… the idea of going back outside felt really nice to her at that moment. Her once strong grip loosened as the ‘teasie’ was now the teaser… as it usually was. Sayori pulled Monika's head close to her neck, nuzzling at the top of her head. The belly laugh through Sayori’s body wasn’t just audible, Monika could feel it as she was held tightly against her neck.
“Pfft you’re such a dork,” Sayori kept giggling as she now held Monika fully in her lap. “How are YOU the embarrassed one?!”
Monika had no real answer that would save her here. She simply stayed in her cuddle prison, groaning but accepting of fate.
She should really thank Past Monika for forgetting a jacket. One of the smartest mistakes she had ever made.
