Same-Second Delivery

Summary:

While Graham Ness Payser has always been the cocky, arrogant, self-centered egotist we know him to be today, he hasn't always been in a position where some of those qualities held merit. "Same-Second Delivery" delves into Graham's underwhelming and boring life as a mailman and how one delivery to a certain Vice President presented him with the chance to finally rid himself of his boring job and achieve the career he knew he was always destined to have... or at least, that's what he keeps telling himself.

Chapter 1: Prologue

Chapter Text

“The world is colorless. The world is a dark and downright horrendous place completely devoid of any genuine talent. Some suits get by, others don’t. People settle for ‘okay’ when they could be pushing for so much more…

“Clinging to your baroque methods, pretending like they aren’t going to fail you one day… and when that day comes… You’re all going to wish you saw my vision.”

“But I could ignore all of that if it weren’t for one thing. Sure, the world is slow and unrefined… but worst of all…”

Graham: “IT’S SOOO BORING!” Graham says aloud as he places letters into the various wall-mounted mailboxes in front of him

A pedestrian snickers as they pass him, causing Graham to shift his attention towards them

Graham: “Something funny, bud?” He says with a disgusted expression

Stranger (Struggling to contain their laughter) : “Ahah… A bit, yeah.”

Graham sneers in their direction

Graham: “I don’t have time to prove it to you, but I can say with a hundred percent certainty that I’m not the kind of guy you wanna be laughing at.” Graham says as he turns back to the mailboxes

The pedestrian chuckles a bit more

Stranger: “Ahaha… Ah, I’m sorry. It’s hard to take ya seriously. You can’t pin it on me when you look like that.”

The letters fall out of Graham’s hand and flat onto the ground as he turns back and glares intensely at the stranger

Graham (Irate): “Yeah?”

Stranger: “Pfft… Yeah. I mean, come on… I don’t need to be the one to tell you how tacky the hairstyle is, do I?”

Graham’s expression shifts from irate to confident as his gritted teeth shift to a sly grin

Graham: “Wanna see a magic trick?” Graham says as he leans down and places his hand on the stranger’s shoulder

The stranger looks up at Graham with a raised eyebrow before brushing his hand off their shoulder

Stranger: “Okay, let’s keep the physical contact out of this, yeah?”

Graham laughs then smiles with a small shoulder shrug

Graham: “Have it your way, let’s check that attention span!”

Graham exclaims as he leans forward into a sprinting position

The stranger slowly backs up

Graham: “Hate to tell ya, but this is gonna su-”

Graham’s phone goes off in his pocket, playing a heavy metal ringtone featuring two layered guitar tracks

Graham groans before standing back up, taking his phone out of his pocket, reading the ID, then looking back at the stranger

Graham: “If you were interested in never speaking to me again, now’s your chance.”

Graham says whilst waving the stranger away with his free hand

The stranger chuckles one last time before turning on their heel and walking away

Graham sighs before flipping open his phone

Graham (To Phone): “Hey dude.”

Flint (Over Phone): “Hey, Graham. I just wanted to… uh… check up on you. Heh… How’s work going?”

Graham turns back around, the stranger is already out of sight

“Pfft… Must’ve taken off running” he things to himself

Graham: “Uneventful as ever. ”

Flint: “Heh well… I mean at least you’re out and about again. Nice seeing you back on your feet.”

Graham: “I dunno what you’re talking about. I’m never off of em’. You know that, dude.”

Graham says whilst leaning over to pick up the letters with his free hand and sighing

Flint: “Hahaha… I know, I know… You know what I mean…”

Graham can’t help but return the laughter

Graham: “Heh, yeah. I think I do.”

He says as he places the few remaining letters in the boxes

Flint: “How much longer till your shift’s over?”

Graham: “Just one delivery left. Package for some ‘Allanwrench Bravecog’ guy. Should be done in a flash.”

Flint: “Oh? That’s great! Would you… maybe wanna catch a movie afterwards..?”

He says nervously

Graham smiles smugly

Graham: “Cmon, dude. You couldn’t catch me sitting still for that long if your life depended on it.”

He says jokingly

Flint: “O-Oh. Right… Sorry, Graham, I- I can cancel the tickets…” Flint says sadly

Graham: “Uh, dude? I’m just playin’. I’ll be there.”

Flint breathes a sigh of relief

Flint: “Ah… heh… sorry, I’m still picking up on your sarcasm…”

Graham: “Just take it easy man. Nothin’ to worry about. I’ll call you when I’m on my way.”

Flint: “Thank you. Run safe!”

Graham: “Heh, you know I’m not gonna do that.” He says smugly before ending the call and putting the phone back in his suit

Graham (to himself): “Alright ‘Mr. Bravecog…” He says with a package in his hands

“Let’s get this over with.”
