Fireworks in the Dark

Summary:

Touya hasn’t seen fireworks since she was a kid. She also hates explosions due to her sensitive hearing. Fortunately Kakashi has an idea. Cuteness ensues

Notes:

Back before Touya joined anbu, her team was killed when enemies ambushed her with paper bombs, scrambling her sonar and incapacitating her, so she doesn’t particularly like the sound of explosions.

Anyway, Happy New Year!

Work Text:

Touya tugged halfheartedly at her hand as Kakashi pulled her along after him. “Where are we even going? You know fireworks are just a whole lot of loud noise for me, right?”

Her boyfriend glanced back over his shoulder at her, guiding her up the trail to the Hokage monument. “I know, but just humor me, okay?”

She sighed, but grinned at him. “You’re lucky I love you.”

He chuckled. “I know,” he repeated.

It wasn’t long until they got to the top, the two of them easily making the climb. He led her a bit closer to the edge, wrapping an arm around her waist.

“Alright, use your Blindsight,” he told her, and she let out a breath and nodded, focusing chakra to her eyes. He watched as her pupils appeared, smiling as she looked up at him with restored vision.

“Okay, done.” She flinched a tiny bit at a stray firework exploding prematurely in the distance, and he tightened his arm around her reassuringly.

“It’s okay. Might wanna cover your ears, though.”

She reached up and plugged her ears, and just in time. Another explosion echoed, muffled by her fingers now, and her eyes widened as colorful light bloomed above them.

Kakashi watched her, a soft smile spreading across his face under his mask. He knew she hadn’t seen a fireworks display since they were kids, and it showed on her face. The explosions echoed and rolled through the village, and colors shone and sparkled in the sky, reflecting in her eyes.

Oh yeah, he was in love.

Eventually he leaned down to let his lips brush against the back of her hand through his mask as he spoke into her ear. “Brace yourself for the grand finale.”

She clasped her hands a bit tighter to the sides of her head, though a particularly loud boom still made her twitch slightly. Her lips parted as she watched, awestruck, as it seemed like every firework left in the village went off at once, lighting up the entire sky before fading away.

He reached up with his free hand and lightly tugged on her hand, chuckling softly. “There, see? Not so bad, right?”

She turned in his grasp and smiled up at him, and he swore he could still see the fireworks in her eyes. “It was amazing!” she commented, her gaze dropping to the concealed lower half of his face. She lifted a hand, slowly reaching for the edge of his mask. He let her pull it down over his nose and lips, watching how her eyes followed the motion. He smiled down at her, then leaned in and kissed her softly, pulling her close and lingering at her lips.

“…But now it’s perfect.”
