Cakes of War

Summary:

MJ makes you a surprise cake for your birthday.

Work Text:

MJ wasn’t really a baker, but on your birthday, she had put an apron on and covered herself in flour. She was determined to make you a cake which would make you drool even ten years after this day - and she would succeed in it. She was almost tempted to put on a war mask with that turquoise frosting she had bought to emphasise her point.

And a couple of hours later the kitchen looked like a mess, messy plates and a dozen of cups and bowls were scattered around the sink, but MJ was in a hurry - you would be home in any second and the frosting wasn’t ready yet.

And when she heard the key turning in the lock, she ran to the door looking like a baking monster, there was flour in her face and hair and she looked like a crazy experimenter professor, which suited her if you’d look at her school. You couldn’t lie though, the sight of MJ standing there with a flour cloud around her spooked you a bit.

“Jesus, MJ! What are you doing here?”

“I have a spare key, remember? And oh, I almost forgot, happy birthday.. I made something for you,” she said as she presented a messy thing on a plate which resembled a piece of cake. You furrowed your eyebrows at the sight.

“Oh, MJ, you shouldn’t have! Thank you.” You took the plate and the little spoon from her as you went to sit on your sofa. MJ sat down beside you and observed you as you inspected the cake. “It’s… pretty.”

“I just wanted to make something quickly. You know, the thought matters.” she was nervous, you could hear her from her voice. She was trying to act nonchalant, but she was nervous about how you’d like her baking skills or “skills”. And as she looked at you finally putting the spoon in your mouth, her breathing hitched for a moment, already clutching a paper towel to help you spit it out if needed. But for her surprise, your eyes lit up after tasting it and you swallowed it as you turned to look at your friend.

“MJ, I’m going to be honest. It might not be the prettiest but God this is good.” You licked the cream from your lips and savoured the flavours for a bit. “Can I get some more?”

“Sure. I’ll get the cake.” She smiled at you quickly before going back to the kitchen. When she came back, you noticed something on her cheeks.

“MJ?”

“Hmm?”

“Is that… frosting in your face? It looks like a warpaint.” you asked as she froze for a second. Then she pursed her lips and shrugged.

“Oh. I thought of putting it on for fun.”
