Chapter 1: Statesman

Chapter Text

The look of pure dread filled Loki’s face as he and his brother Thor looked up at the huge ship that had just crossed their path on the way to Midgard. Confusion filled Thor’s. The brothers looked at each other and without a second to process what they had just seen, the ship opposite them started firing. Loki held on to the side of the ship to stop himself from falling over. Gasps and screams echoed throughout the hallways of the ship. The screams that belong to the innocent Asgardian families who had already been through so much, losing their home and many of them losing a loved one due to either Hela or Ragnarok. “We need to sound the alarm,” Thor said in desperation as he steadied himself up. Loki nodded in agreement and followed Thor who was now running to the control room, Loki was too stunned to do any of his own thinking. How on earth did Thanos find him after all this time. Loki had almost forgotten about the dreaded titan. Almost. No one alive can ever forget about someone that mad.

Once they had reached the control room, Heimdall was already there sounding the alarm along with Valkyrie and Banner alongside him. “Do we know who it is?” Thor asked. Valkyrie shook her head and Bruce remained quiet.

“I am unable to see them,” Heimdall responded, little interfered with his powers so this was definitely a cause for concern for Thor.

“Thanos.” It took everything for Loki to be able to utter that name.
“Who?” Questioned Thor.
“Are you sure?’ Heimdall asked.
“Positive,” Loki responded.
“We need to evacuate as many people as possible, how many escape pods are there?” Heimdall looked at Thor who still looked confused at who the Hel Thanos was and why they were attacking their ship.

“It won’t be enough for everyone, maybe three quarters.” Valkyrie responded, desperation in her voice.
“Val, you go and lead the evacuation, as many people as possible. Head to Midgard the rest of us will come up with a plan,” Thor responded.
“Don’t die, Asgard needs its king,” came the response from Val. With that she ran off down the hall without looking back.

Silence filled the room for a split second until another hit from the ship was taken. “Now you’re going to tell me who the Hel Thanos is,” Thor looked straight at his brother. “Thor there's no time we need to help and evacuate people, our people,” Loki said without looking Thor in the eyes.
“Bruce, Heimdall, you go and assist Val, me and Loki need to have a chat.” Reluctantly they all left, leaving only Loki and Thor in the room.

“You're hiding something and I need to know what it is. Why do you know who that is?”
“Thor, I promise I'll explain everything to you when we’ve got to safety but we need to get to Midgard now. We need to alert your little Avenging buddies and we need to come up with a plan so he doesn’t end up wiping out half the universe with the infinity stones,” Loki spoke, desperation in his voice.
Thor looked confused, “How do you know all of that, did he tell you? Did you work with him?”
Sorrow filled his eyes. “Yes.”
“Why?”
“I had no choice.”

With that another explosion hit the ship. “I took the Tesseract, we can use it to get everyone out,” a betrayed look filled Thor’s face as yet another explosion hit the ship.
“Right, we need to leave now then.”

Thor and Loki ran down the hall to the room where everyone was. Several hundred people had already boarded one of the three rescue vessels and it was just about to launch. The plan was to get the majority of people off the ship via the rescue vessels and then those who were left would risk using the Tesseract. The immense power of the Tesseract could be dangerous to those who weren’t used to it. Less than ten minutes and two dozen explosions later everyone who could fit on the vessels were gone, leaving only Heimdall, Bruce Banner, Valkyrie, Thor and Loki.

“So the plan is to go straight to the compound using the Tesseract?” Bruce asked. As soon as the final word left Banner’s mouth the largest of explosions happened, and with that everyone fell to the floor. Sparks fell from the ceiling and a piece of debris fell a metre to the left of where Val was now sitting. “We need to go now,” Loki exclaimed in panic from the impending doom now filling his voice. Quickly, The Revengers all held onto the Tesseract and they were transported out of the wrecked Statesman ship.
