And then: a carriage to the docks before the red morning sky had faded to pale blue. The ship: James stood at the rail, watched the sailors clamber through the rigging and offered no comment. Every once in a while, he’d glance at the shore. Then at the horizon. When the captain approached, he angled himself between the bookish little man and Thomas and Miranda, and Miranda stared at the line of his body beneath the dark, wide-skirted coat, and didn’t think of him laid out on the Hamilton bed, bright-eyed and bared wholly to them.
(Or: Thomas is seasick, James is just sick, and Miranda is trying to figure out what she wants.)
