Summary
After Sabo’s death, Ace felt like they relied heavily on one another, Luffy for his last brother and Ace for the last thing keeping him from just removing his cursed existence. Luffy still didn’t understand everything that was going on with him, but he knew that he was one of the last things tethering him to this world and made it his personal goal to let Ace know he adored and cared for him.
He thinks he once heard Dadan call it an unhealthy coping mechanism, but what did that old hag know? Nothing, that’s right.
[Mika was given an idea to write and they used this as an excuse to hurt Ace too much oops-- Please read the beginning Author's note in Chapter 01.]

Ace couldn’t hear anymore though, his ears were ringing loudly, the only thoughts running through his head was everything gone.
His dresses that he bought to go out as Ann.
His copy of Sabo’s flag from when they were kids.
His home.
_
“Izou! I did it!” Izou was snapped out of his thoughts by the sound of Ace’s voice, he and Marco turned around and-!
“Oh…!” Izou felt his eyes widened and tears spring to the corner of his eyes at the sight before him.
The outfit he’d made for Ace all that time ago was being worn for the first time. The skirt was long enough to just brush his legs, the royal blue complimenting the deep red of the off the shoulder shirt, that the sniper may or may not have made to emphasize the teens chest and waist, a small heart opening on the middle and to complete the look, flowing sleeves to blow in the wind.
_
When he’d followed his grandson’s presence to the lower deck, Garp had expected many things. His grandson doing whatever pirates did on ships being one of them, he didn’t expect to find his grandson pinned to the wall with a man twice his age on top of him, their flames rising and making the area warmer.
A flare of protective fury filled his chest at the sight of his oldest grandson in an outfit that was so revealing, moaning softly, his mind jumping to the worst conclusions possible. Moving swiftly, his hand latched onto the back of the purple shirt and yanked the blond bird brat off, tossing him easily up onto the deck. “Get your fucking hands off my grandson!”
“Gramps!” Ace yelped, flames disappearing like they were never there, carmine eyes wide and face flushed. “What are you doing?!”
_
“One brat is a Revolutionary and the World’s Most Wanted man, one brat died by the people I’ve sworn to protect, my home is lawless, full of crooks and horrors and I fucked up my eldest brat’s mental state. Wonder what I did to mess up my youngest brat.”
“You know now, Garp.” Whitebeard’s gold eyes met Garp’s dark ones. “You still have time to fix it.”
_
“I’m so sorry.” The words were whispered right into his ear. “I thought if I made you hate Roger, you would hate the thought of pirates and not become one, staying safe. I thought if you wanted to do anything I told you not too, I’d train you to be tough enough to withstand it. I thought if I could show you how the world was with Grey Terminal and the Noble’s of Goa Kingdom, you wouldn’t want to do anything to cross them.” He pulled back and smiled at Ace, eyes just a tinge sad. “But you’re every bit your mother’s son.”
Ace’s eyes widened and a wobbly smile overcame his lips as he hugged his grandfather back. “Thank you. That’s all I wanted. An apology.”
“And you deserved one,” A pause. “But really, the bird brat? He’s like twice your age!”
“Wasn’t Roger twice as old as my mother?” Garp groaned, head falling onto his grandson’s shoulder in defeat.
“Fucking cradle robbers all around.”
_
“So, Ace, I know I saw you walking with Marco ‘The Phoenix’, but that doesn’t explain exactly who he is, right?” Sabo walked forward, gently tugging his older (but shorter now, take that) brother behind him. “I’ve heard that you’re both on the same crew, but that doesn’t explain this whole thing, right?”
“H-Ha! Marco and I are just really close friends!” Ace’s hands waved back and forth frantically, sweat dripping down his face at the disbelieving look the two blond’s sent him. “S-Seriously, come on!” He grabbed onto Sabo’s elbow and began to drag him away, though Marco heard the resulting conversation.
“How old is he anyway?” hissed Sabo, glaring at the zoan user darkly.
“That’s not important!”
“No, that man is definitely like twice your age!” A small struggle, resulting in Ace tugging harder on his brother.
“No, you shut up, come on!”
_
“...after that, we became much more secretive in how Ace was perceived.” Sabo finished, keenly aware of Marco’s horror filled face. “Ace may not have understood at the time, but I knew. I’ve lived with them for years before finally becoming free and Luf knew it wasn’t right whatever they had planned for Ace. So we protected him, even Dadan. Ace is really pretty, but too naive. Not in the trusting way Luffy is, but in the way that he never knows true intentions.”
“...” Marco could see it and that terrified him, considering the former Spade Pirates worked hard to keep Ace in the dark about some things, but he didn’t think it could’ve been worse.
“So, I’ll trust you with his heart right now, but remember Marco the fucking Phoenix, no matter what kind of healing powers you have,” Sabo’s eyes glinted darkly. “You hurt him and I’ll make you wish you could die. Are we clear?”
Marco nodded, eyes falling to his sleeping lover.
He’d protect Ace anyway he can.
