Duplo haters unite

Summary:

Karkat and Kankri are two boys, Kankri barely passing as a young man, who have just been stuck in a foster home. Lovely. They’re taken in by a relative, who happens to be fostering some other kids his age. Lovely!
Too bad they’re in a whole new neighborhood, full of people he doesn’t know.

Work Text:

Your name is Karkat Vantas, and you don’t want to be here.

You knew Kankri wanted to be here even less. Neither of you wanted to be here. Neither of you wanted to be in front of this chaotically normal house either. You expected to see a shack made of rotten wood or whatever horror fantasies had been put in your head about getting relocated. But everything looked sort-of fine. For now.

You hesitate to go inside, but Kankri stays by your side. You feel safe.

You walk through the door, clinging to your big brother, and aren’t greeted with some big surprise. You just see two boys about your brother’s age washing dishes. They look at you and you feel strange. Like you don’t belong here.

You’re ushered by your supposed new caretaker to a room down the hall, greeted by two children playing legos or something in the floor. They don’t look related.

“yo dont step on our duplo bruh”

  “yeah! theyre trash enough >:(“

  “OH GOG. SORRY.”

“its fine!” The young lady smiles at you, and you feel yourself blush with embarrassment. She looks really pretty, too bad you’re going to be living together. Like siblings. Yuck.

You place your bag down, taking out some of your clothes. You could only take a few, your guardian wanted you to start over. To have a good life. The boy snags one of the T-shirts from your grasp.

“dude we wear the same size sick” He smiles, passing the shirt back to you. You smile, though annoyed. You saw this as incredibly rude.

“COOL,” you mutter, continuing to unpack. When you get to the bottom, you pull out a container of Legos. Regular Legos! It’s on the smaller size, but those two stare at it like it’s a treasure trove. It was a gift from your guardian before you had to go.

“can we share with you?”

“SURE.”

You spend the first bonding moment with your new “siblings,” bonding over how shitty duplo is.
