There Went the Earth

Summary:

In which Tharon-Zul realizes he really should've hitched some poor sod up to Zargothrax to prevent Massive Collateral Damage of Galactic Proportions.

Notes:

Imagine being Tharon-Zul during the battle on Mars:
Things are going great, everybody's dead, the Chaos Wizards are going to rule the Empire of Fi-- nevermind, there goes the Earth. Oh shit. Oh fuck.

Work Text:

Tharon-Zul stared first at the monitor in front of him, then at the porthole in the outer wall of the ship, then at the monitor again, then back at the porthole, then the screen again, then the porthole again.

- Uuuuhhh…

- What the hell was that?! – somebody from the crew (Tharon-Zul had not bothered learning the names of most people here) finally chimed.

There was silence. The kind of long, very uncomfortable silence that happens when nobody has the balls to walk up to a window and check if the monster, killer, or just the annoying neighbour has left the premises. Eventually, and only because there was no perceivable threat coming from the planet below any longer, His Overlordly Lordship, The Bane Of All Who Are McFife, Tharon-Zul the N-th, commanded the ship to turn so it would face the direction the shockwave had come from.

- Hm, - he drew out, more for the sakes of saying something.

Some more silence.

- I think that was the Earth, - somebody offered, finally, and somebody else, unrelated, slapped something, cursing out the computer’s clearly inferior processing power.

Should have checked for system updates and deleted the unnecessary files, cookies, and caches, to clear up memory space and speed things up, before leaving the base. After the Triton Mission, there was still so much junk in there – morgue files mostly, without a doubt, the bane of every and all average users of everything with more processing power and memory space than a typewriter.

- Hm, - Tharon-Zul acknowledged this observation, for the Earth (or rather, the star that represented the Earth, for it was too far away for the naked human eye, both wizard and regular, to see) was, indeed, gone, and the sensors instead picked up an entire newly formed asteroid field in that area, which had come out of nowhere moments ago. – Hmm. Hmmmmmm.

There was some shuffling about somewhere behind his back. The wizard raised his hand and rubbed his chin thoughtfully once, then a couple more times, in the process reminding himself, he was long due for a good shave.

- Heyyy, - a third voice piped up, somewhere at the very back; one of the new recruits, he assumed, who had no sense of self-preservation and thus dared express their opinions fairly openly still. – Has anyone seen Lord Zargothrax lately?

Tharon-Zul figured he was lucky he stood with his back to the crew, for the grimace he made right now would have surely been the hot topic among Chaos Wizards everywhere for ages to come, as he realized that the advice of assigning the dark wizard somebody to chaperone him around while simultaneously keeping an eye on him had not been as bad of an idea as he had initially thought.

- Shit, - he finally gave voice to what everybody on the ship thought right now this very moment. - Fuck!
