Work Text:

Bucky knew he shouldn’t be here. It wasn’t just a feeling. He should be helping out his friends and getting off of this island, yet something was preventing him.

It was the same force that caused him to fail at helping his friends, making him explore places he didn't want to.

And for what? To figure something out? To find some mystery hidden deep within this island?

It didn’t feel like the island the deeper he went. Messed up versions of his friends- Starlings- lurked in this layer, and he has seen them.

He doesn’t know who or what they are, but the force controlling him seemed to.

He didn’t know what the person controlling him would see, but there would be periods where he would be stuck in an uncomfortable bamboo barrel for prolonged periods of time before he was able to explore again. It was almost like they were checking something Bucky couldn’t see. Maybe it was the answers they were looking for? Or maybe even something to get them closer to that answer?

He wasn’t sure. Still, during those times where he was alone, there was a part of him hoping that after everything was done. things went back to normal. He missed his fun chats with Olive. He missed calming down a panicked Walter. He missed eating Giovanni’s meals, each of them were packed with passion and care.

He hoped that Chief Wulf didn't know about this, and he hoped that Stumbler was okay after knowing about all of this. This place wasn’t safe, and he wished the best for the blue rabbit.

Right now however, he had to focus on the task at hand, finding all the computers and not letting the Starlings catch him. It’s not like he had much of a choice in the matter anyways. But his focus would mean that whatever was controlling him could get him out of here faster.

After a few failed attempts, they were finally able to turn on all the computers without getting caught by the Starlings. He was sent back into the void, but then to a room that just had the blue sky that he missed covering the walls and floor, then a door on one side.

He decided to speak up.

“Friend? Can we stop for a second? Just… need to relax…” He paused for a moment, before sighing. “We can check out the door when you’re ready.” He added. He was hoping the entity would actually stop and let him take a break.

And, he wasn’t being moved. Perfect. He was listened to for the first time, his one wish granted.

He closed his eyes and sat down, feeling his heart pound against his chest and hearing it echo in his ears. He was shaking, he didn’t realize how terrifying that whole experience was until it was over, the adrenaline pumping through him was one of the only things keeping him going.

He knew the safety of this room would be over soon, but he let himself relish in it for just a bit longer.

And soon enough, he sat up and opened his eyes, being moved towards the door again to face another challenge.

At least he wouldn’t be alone.
