Everything feels wrong.
He can see that his hands have turned a dull gray, far from his original, bright blue.
It all happened so fast...
"Branch, you're going to do the most important thing of all," Floyd's words ring through his mind. "You're gonna take care of Grandma!" The statement is hollow, now.
He failed.
It was all his fault.
Floyd had trusted him and he had thrown it all away.
Floyd never even came back.
"You had one job," Branch grumbles to himself, picking up sticks, for supplies in the bunker. It's a thought that has plagued his mind ever since.
Ever since the moment he so horribly messed up.
The thought has never left him.
Not even during the escape from the Bergens on Trollstice.
Not even upon finding the new place for their village.
Not even when he finished his bunker and felt safe where he was hiding.
Not even now, as he watches Poppy and her friends build up to the biggest mistake of their lives.
"You had one job," He tells himself, as the sharp memory of his Grandmother hits him, as he walks away.
It'll be their fault this time, not his.
Not his.
