Work Text:
Luz stood outside the door nervously, reading the sign for the fifth time.
Hexside LGBTQ+ Club
She took a deep breath, hoping her roommate Willow had been right about this.
“Luz, take it from someone who didn’t realize they were pan for WAY too many years. Go to the club, listen to their stories. You might find something out about yourself.”
Luz reached out and opened the door, opening into a smallish room already full of people. She saw a girl with brown hair and a distinctive fish hook earring making her stand out as she very obviously flirted with the girl next to her, who was playing with her dark green braid as she blushed. Not far from them were a pair making out: one with bright pink hair and a letterman jacket, the other with dark skin and dual-tone hair pulled up in a ponytail.
Luz was so distracted that she didn’t notice the person she was about to run into until it was too late.
“Oh my gosh, I am so sorry, it’s just- it’s my first time here, and everything was so overwhelming and-”
Luz trailed off as her brain screeched to a halt. The girl she had run into stood up, waving it off lightly, her lavender hair bouncing in its ponytail as she laughed.
“Don’t worry about it,” the girl giggled as she turned around. “I totally get it.” The girl’s eyes practically glimmered gold in the light as she smiled at Luz. Her porcelain skin shone bright like moonlight, and Luz couldn’t help but glance down at the girl’s lips. “I’m Amity.”
Luz felt her face heat up as butterflies fluttered around in her stomach. “I-I’m bisexual. I MEAN LUZ!”
Her eyes widened in unadorned fear as Amity giggled. Amity smiled up at Luz, mistaking the brown-haired girl’s nervousness for first-time jitters.
“Hey, it’s alright,” Amity said, placing a hand gently on Luz’s shoulder. “You’re surrounded by peers here. No one is going to make fun of you here. When did you learn you were bi?”
“Recently,” Luz blurted out, the blush returning to her face as she avoided eye contact with Amity. “Very recently. Uh, what, um…”
Amity laughed, the sound sending the butterflies in Luz’s stomach to overdrive. “Me? I’m a lesbian. But I’ve known for years. I actually run the club!”
Amity’s words washed over Luz as her brain latched onto one thing.
Lesbian.
Lesbian.
She likes girls.
I’m girls!
“Will you marry me?”
Luz’s eyes widened in fear as the words left her mouth before her brain could catch up. Amity looked back at her in surprise and Luz clenched her eyes shut.
This is why you got bullied in high school, Luz.
When she opened her eyes, she saw Amity smiling at her with a light blush on her cheeks, writing something down on a piece of paper.
Great. This is how you get kicked out of a new club on the first day.
“That’s a little fast for me, but,” Amity said, breaking Luz out of her thoughts. “A date would be nice. I’ve got club tonight, but I’m free the rest of the week.”
Luz looked at Amity with wide eyes, her mouth flapping up and down as she failed to form a reply.
“Hey, Amity!” A voice yelled from further in the room, and Luz jumped slightly. “It’s time to start!”
Amity rolled her eyes. “Yeah, just a sec!” She called over her shoulder, never taking her eyes off Luz. She reached out, pushing a piece of paper into Luz’s hand before taking a few steps back. “Don’t keep a girl waiting.”
Luz watched as Amity walked away, addressing the club at large as they all started to talk. She looked down at the paper Amity had given her, her heart skipping a beat when she saw a phone number staring up at her with a small heart next to it.
She looked toward Amity, noticing the lavender-haired girl glancing at her with a light blush. Luz smiled when they made eye contact, looking back down at the numbers in her hand with a huge grin.
“Don’t worry,” Luz said, pulling out her phone. “I won’t.”
