Chapter Text

Having an older brother was nice, Osamu thought. Atsumu was a doting older brother; although annoying sometimes, he took genuine, good care of Osamu. He was always eager to teach him things, always bought him snacks and meals (Osamu wasn’t really sure how Atsumu could afford it, considering how much Osamu could eat, but he wasn’t going to question it), and was always available to talk to his baby brother. Overall, Atsumu was a great older brother, no matter how much Osamu didn’t want to admit it.

Now was not one of those times, as he watched his big brother, three years his senior, flirt with his college roommate.

It all started when Atsumu was helping Osamu move into his dorms, about to start his first year of university. While Atsumu hadn’t even bothered going to college, proclaiming since they were kids that he’d play professional volleyball, Osamu was different. Osamu didn’t want to play professional volleyball (much to Atsumu’s dismay; he’d always dreamed of having his kid brother on the same team as him). Instead, Osamu had told Atsumu that he wanted to go to culinary and business school over the phone, voice soft and scared. And despite himself, Atsumu eagerly cheered his brother on, helping him with the applying process and subsequently, moving in.

Osamu was grateful for his brother’s help, of course. Moving into the dorms was going to be a pain in the ass, after all. Having his brother, who was a professional volleyball player and jacked would definitely make the process a lot easier. The only problem was, he forgot how much of an ass Atsumu could be to people besides him.

“Woah, yer roommate already bought a crap ton of cleanin’ stuff. I guess ya don’t gotta worry about gettin’ yer own, Samu,” Atsumu said, eyeing the pile of wipes and cleaners and disinfectants that were already neatly placed in the closet of their living room (Atsumu was paying for his dorming, so he’d graciously put him in a suite style. Osamu briefly wondered how much money Atsumu made to be able to afford this and his already luxurious life).

“I dunno if he’ll wanna share his things, Tsumu-nii. I should buy my own in case,” Osamu told him, putting down another bag of kitchen supplies. He’d brought a bunch of stuff to stock their kitchen from home. Taking pride in his kitchen was a must for Osamu, even if this was just a dorm.

Atsumu just shrugged, “With the amount he’s got, you’d think he was sellin’ them or something. Does someone really need seven boxes of disinfectant wipes?”

“Yes, some of us do. I doubt someone like you would understand that,” a new voice interrupted them, causing both Miya boys to look over at the front door. Standing there was who Osamu could only assume was his new roommate. He was tall, taller than Osamu, and had black curls adorning his head. He looked pissed, quite frankly, and Osamu wanted to smack his brother for already making a bad impression.

His brother, however, seem undeterred, enjoying how annoyed the newcomer was. He walked straight up to the man, grin growing as he saw a light blush form on the other’s face, even as he scowled, “Well, hello there. And what’s yer name?” Atsumu asked, voice already tinging on flirty. Osamu was going to have to kill him, it seemed.

The roommate squinted at him, before looking at Osamu. He then turned back to Atsumu, “It’s rude to ask someone their name without introducing themselves first. And you’re not a student here, are you? You look too old to be here,” he snarked back. Atsumu only cackled.

“Are you a 50-year old man stuck in an 18-year old’s body? What’s with the way ya talk?” Atsumu laughed, earning a glare from the roommate, “I’m Miya Atsumu. Yer roommate’s older brother. And I ain’t too old to go here, ‘m only 21. You are..?”

He huffed, “Sakusa Kiyoomi. And there’s nothing wrong with the way I speak,” Sakusa claimed, earning another laugh from Atsumu. While he scowled, there was still a blush on his face, and Atsumu seemed well aware of that.

Elbowing his brother out of the way, Osamu introduced himself, “Sorry about him, no one raised him. I’m Miya Osamu, yer roommate. I won’t steal yer things, don’t worry.” Sakusa seemed to give Osamu a once over while he contemplated his words, nodding to himself. Osamu could only hope that meant he ‘passed’.

“You’re Miya Atsumu, the setter for the Black Jackals, aren’t you?” Sakusa asked, turning back towards Atsumu. The recognition made Atsumu puff up with pride.

“I am! You recognize me? ‘M touched, Omi-Omi,” Atsumu sang, making Sakusa blush even more while his scowl deepened.

“What did you just call me?”

“Omi-Omi! It’s yer nickname. Ain’t it cute?”

“Don’t call me something as ridiculous as that.”

“Why not? It’s cute, jus’ like you.”

“Wha –“ Sakusa startled, his earns burning now. Osamu just looked up, hoping that the gods would kill him now. If this was how it was going on the first day, he couldn’t imagine how it’d be from now on.

After their first encounter, Osamu had figured out that Sakusa actually wasn’t so bad. He was nice, in his own ways, and he was overall a good roommate. The two were even friends now, having meals together both in the dorms and on campus. It was nice; Osamu was never that good at making friends, so having his roommate helped him feel less lonely at college.

The only problem was that Atsumu seemed to be taking a special interest in his roommate as well. Previously, Osamu had assumed that Atsumu would only be stopping by once in a while to visit him, considering he was a professional volleyball player. He figured his brother would come by once a month or so to see him. Instead, Atsumu was coming almost every weekend, and it didn’t seem like he was coming for Osamu.

“Hi, Omi-kun!” Atsumu called out, smiling when he saw Sakusa flinch from where he was sitting on the couch. Osamu rolled his eyes from their kitchen, frying some rice in his wok.

Osamu deadpanned, “Hi, brother of mine. How nice of you to greet yer little brother.”

“Samu! You know I was gonna say hi to ya too. Aren’t you bein’ so clingy and cute?” Atsumu cooed, wrapping an arm around Osamu’s middle, undeterred by Osamu trying to elbow him off.

Sakusa coughed, “Hello, Atsumu-san.” That dragged Atsumu’s attention back, his eyes brightening from the attention.

“Omi! What’re ya doin’ inside on such a nice day like today?” Atsumu asked, going into the living room to sit next to him. The close proximity made Sakusa pinken, much to Atsumu’s glee.

“I was going to go to the gym later to practice,” Sakusa claimed, making Atsumu perk up.

“Oh, yer gonna go play volleyball? Lemme come! I can set to ya!” Atsumu said excitedly. Osamu rolled his eyes again, annoyed.

He interrupted, “Oh, so ya came here ta spend time with Sakusa, not me? What an older brother I got,” Osamu said, focusing on the meal in front of him.  Atsumu whined from his spot on the couch.

“Don’t be like that, Samu. Ya never wanna play volleyball with me anymore. It’d be nice ta see some fresh blood, especially since Omi here wants ta play professionally one day, right?” Atsumu asked, looking at Sakusa with sparkling eyes.

Sakusa looked away, flustered, “Ah, yes. I do want to play, after college. But since you came here for Osamu, you should spend the day with him, not me. It would be rude.”

Atsumu turned to look at his brother, who was decidedly not looking back, “Samu, ya wanna come along? I always love settin’ to ya.”

“No, I’ll stay here. I have stuff to do anyways, ya didn’t call me ahead of time,” Osamu said, finally plating their lunch, “Are you guys gonna eat this now then, or after you practice?” Atsumu stared at his brother for a moment, contemplating something.

“I’ll eat later Osamu, thank you,” Sakusa said.

“Then I’ll eat later with Omi too!” Atsumu agreed. Osamu could feel his eye twitch.

He plated up one serving of fried rice, sitting down at the table, “Fine. Have a good practice.” Osamu turned away from them, propping his phone up and playing a show while he ate his lunch. He could hear Sakusa puttering around him before the door opened and closed, assuming that Atsumu went with him. He was surprised when instead, his brother sat down next to him, peering at his face.

“What’s wrong, Samu?” Atsumu asked, keeping his voice down.

“Nothin’s wrong, Tsumu-nii,” Osamu replied, stubborn. It was Atsumu’s turn to roll his eyes now.

He scoffed, “You act like I can’t tell when yer upset. What happened? Are you that upset that I’m not spendin’ the day with you?”

“No one cares about that, stupid,” Osamu said plainly, making Atsumu lift a brow.

“Then what’s wrong? Are ya havin’ trouble with makin’ friends again? Samu, you shouldn’t worry about that,” Atsumu said softly, making Osamu scowl as his cheeks heated up.

He shout-whispered, “I don’t wanna talk about that with you! Can you please just go?”

Stubborn, Atsumu crossed his arms, “No, not until ya tell me what’s wrong. What’re you poutin’ about, Samu?”

Osamu groaned, “I just wish ya’d stop flirtin’ with my roommate in front of me. It’s embarrassing, Tsumu-nii. He’s my age, why’re ya doin’ this?”

“I like ‘im. He’s fun ta tease, and he’s cute. What’s the big deal?” Atsumu asked, genuinely curious. It made Osamu want to break his nose.

“The big deal is that he’s my roommate and friend, and I don’t wantcha messin’ things up fer me!” Osamu exclaimed.

Atsumu complained back, “I won’t! It’ll be fine, Samu. Yer such a worrywart.”

“He’s my only friend here! What if ya break his heart and he starts avoidin’ me?” Osamu demanded.

“I won’t break his heart! I like Omi-Omi, I won’t do somethin’ stupid. This ain’t as big a deal like yer makin’ it out ta be,” Atsumu pouted.

Osamu could feel his irritation growing, growling at his brother, “Oh yeah? How wouldja feel if I started datin’ someone yer age?” he asked, making Atsumu freeze.

“Samu, don’t even joke about somethin’ like that,” Atsumu replied, tone deadly. It didn’t scare Osamu in the slightest, only fueling his annoyance.

“Then stop tryin’ ta fuck my roommate! Or I’ll fuck one of yer teammates!” Osamu challenged, crossing his arms.

Now that pissed off Atsumu, tone icy, “Dontcha fuckin’ dare. Yer a kid, Samu. They’re all too old fer you.” Osamu scoffed, glaring right back.

“If I’m too young fer them, then Sakusa’s too young fer you,” he said.

“I’m 21, I’m not that much older!"

“So? I still don’t wantcha ta keep flirtin’ with him!”

“Why not? I ain’t doin’ anythin’ illegal!”

“Then it ain’t illegal fer me to pursue one of yer teammates!”

“As if ya’d actually do it.”

“Ya wanna bet?” Osamu challenged, raising a brow at his brother.

“No, I don’t. Stay away from ‘em,” Atsumu said, getting up from the table and moving towards the door, “I’m going to the gym with Omi. I’ll be back later, and then I’ll take ya out, ‘kay Samu? Don’t get so jealous, although yer cute this way too,” Atsumu called out, closing the door before Osamu could yell back.

Huffing, Osamu glared at his lunch, pissed off. Why could Atsumu pursue his roommate and that was all fine and dandy, but Osamu couldn’t pursue any of his brother’s teammates? That wasn’t fair! Now granted, Osamu hadn’t even thought about pursuing any of the Jackals before, only saying it in the heat of the moment, but still. If there was something Osamu ran on other than praise and carbs, it was spite.

When Atsumu came back from the gym with Sakusa, both of them sweaty (disgusting), Osamu decided to enact his plan. He approached his brother with Sakusa still in the room and asked, “Hey, Tsumu-nii? Can I come visit ya at practice next weekend?” The question made Atsumu raise a brow, suspicious.

“Why? Ya never wanted ta come ta practices, even when I first started on the team,” Atsumu reminded him, squinting at his brother.

Undeterred, Osamu continued, “I wanted ta see what it was like. Got curious. And we could bring Sakusa too, so he could see what it’s like, since he wants to go pro after graduating,” he said, internally smirking when he saw Sakusa perk up (even if it also made him want to vomit).

That got Atsumu interested, “O- oh, yeah, I guess that would be good fer you, right Omi?”

Sakusa looked at Atsumu with wide eyes, and Osamu immediately knew he was done for, “I – I would appreciate it a lot. If you don’t mind, Atsumu-san.” Hook, line, and sinker.

“Sure, Omi-Omi! I can pick the two of ya up on Saturday mornin’ if that works? You can watch the entire practice and I could even introduce you to the team and the coach,” Atsumu said, excited as well. The three of them quickly made the plans, agreeing on the times. Osamu made sure to be inconspicuous about it after that, trying not to show what he was secretly plotting underneath it all.

If Atsumu wanted to play this game, then Osamu would too. And Saturday was the perfect day to scope out the team and see who had interest in him.

Now, was there a chance that none of the Black Jackals would be interested in him? Yes, and Osamu was well aware of that. There was no way in hell he was going to go to their practice and embarrass himself by throwing himself at the players. No, he was going to scope out the team, maybe flaunt his ass a little, and see who took the bait. Hopefully it’d be one of the cute players (he had a few in mind, but didn’t want to get his hopes up too much). There was one player in particular that Osamu hoped he could entice, and he was the one Osamu was sure would piss Atsumu off the most.

At Inarizaki, Atsumu had been on the same team as one Suna Rintarou. Suna was the same age as Atsumu and played middle blocker, and he was hot. Osamu had a crush on him from the first time he’d seen him; watching Atsumu’s games as a third-year in middle school, he was in awe at his brother’s teammate. Now, he’d known that back then, he had zero chance. Osamu was so much younger, after all, and Suna was a third-year in high school while he was a third-year in middle school. But now, Osamu wasn’t some little kid anymore. He’d grown up, and hopefully Suna would see that too.

When Saturday rolled around, Osamu could feel his nerves drumming in his ears. He figured it was similar for Sakusa, seeing that he was bouncing his knee up and down in Atsumu’s car, the setter chuckling as he commented on it. It made Sakusa stop immediately, a blush forming on his face. Osamu wanted to gag, but he had his own problems to worry about.

Atsumu burst into the gym first, causing everyone to look over at them. Both Sakusa and Osamu scowled, annoyed that he was making a scene, and blushed at the sudden attention. Osamu willed himself not to look for Suna immediately.

“Morning! I brought my baby brother and his roommate, like I said I would,” Atsumu announced, gesturing to the two college kids behind him.

Osamu took the initiative, “Hello, I’m Miya Osamu. Thank you for having us.”

Sakusa was quick to tack on a greeting as well, “Hello, I’m Sakusa Kiyoomi. It’s an honor to watch this practice,” he said, face a little pink and eyes dazed. Damn, Osamu felt a little guilty for using this trip for his own agenda when Sakusa seemed genuinely excited about it.

“Hello! I’m Meian Shuugo, the captain. It’s nice to finally put a face to the name, Osamu. Your brother talks about you all the time, wow you both look so alike,” Meian greeted him, before turning to Sakusa, “And we’re glad to have you here, Sakusa! You’ve been on our radar since you were in high school, so we’re thrilled that you’re interested in MSBY.”

Meian’s words only seemed to make Sakusa blush more, much to Meian’s amusement and Atsumu’s irritation. Osamu could see his brother getting jealous from behind him and rolled his eyes. He was such an idiot.

Osamu then took a chance to look around the gym, seeing some faces that he recognized from his brother’s social media and games and some he didn’t. He was scanning the room when his eyes suddenly landed on him: Suna Rintarou. What Osamu hadn’t expected was for Suna to already be looking at him, the sudden eye contact startling him. Osamu was almost certain that Suna smirked for a moment, before schooling his facial expression back to neutral.

The Jackal’s practice began quickly after that, Sakusa and Osamu sitting on the bench to watch the athletes stretch and get ready for practice. The two talked amongst themselves, talking about volleyball and the team.

It was an hour or so later when their coach invited Sakusa to play with them, making his eyes bulge, “Are – are you sure? I – I don’t want to hold back anyone or distract from your practice.”

“Nonsense, it would be beneficial for us to see how you meld with the team! Please, we have extra uniforms and shoes for you,” their coach said, gesturing for Sakusa to go to the locker room. He turned to Osamu, “You’re also welcome to join. MSBY was also interested in you during high school, Osamu-san. You got an offer letter from us, after all.” Osamu shook his head.

“I’m grateful, but I have no interest in playing volleyball professionally. I’m content with watching,” Osamu said politely. He watched as Atsumu followed Sakusa into the locker room under the premises of showing him around. Osamu could see right through him.

“Your brother is so obvious,” someone said right next to Osamu’s ear, making him jump. He turned around, looking to see Suna behind him, hunched over to his face level and chuckling.

Osamu blinked rapidly, already feeling himself flush, “Ah, yeah, he is. He’s been flirtin’ with Sakusa since he met ‘im when he helped me move in. It’s so annoyin’, and Sakusa eats it right up.”

Suna huffed out a laugh, “I’m sure. He’s definitely Atsumu’s type,” he said, before giving Osamu a quizzical look, “We’ve met before, right? Although you were a kid back then, so I don’t know if you remember me.” Osamu was quick to shake his head.

“No, of course I remember! You were the best middle blocker when Tsumu-nii was in high school. I came to yer games,” Osamu said, feeling his face heat up. The smirk on Suna’s face was not helping.

“Oh, really? I’m grateful you remember. You’ve changed a lot, Osamu,” Suna said, looking Osamu up and down. Uh oh. Showtime was coming quicker than Osamu expected.

Steeling his nerves, Osamu spoke, “You’ve changed a lot too, Suna-san. Yer even hotter than you were back then.” Osamu cringed at his attempt at flirting, but Suna’s smirk only grew, thrilled.

He hummed, “Really? I’m glad you think so, Osamu. What do you say we get to know each other a little better? Wanna hang out after practice today?” Suna asked, a predatory gaze in his eyes.

“Sure, Suna-san. I would love to,” Osamu said, willing his voice not to shake. Holy shit, he’d actually done it. He got Suna Rintarou to be interested in him!

At the sound of their coach calling for them, Suna moved to get up, but not before whispering in Osamu’s ear, “Make an excuse to leave during lunch break. I’ll buy you something.” He winked before jogging away, leaving Osamu a blushing mess in his wake.

Osamu looked over to see Sakusa with his brother, who was looking over at Osamu instead. Osamu just smiled. He could almost see the storm clouds rolling in over his brother’s head, his expression icy.
