Work Text:

"baby, everyone's gonna love you." osamu interrupted oikawa's rant for what must've been the third time that night.

"love me all they want but they'll always have some kind of weird vengeance against me because-" oikawa was interrupted yet again, only this time it was not osamu, but for some reason, suna rintaro. the name rung a bell or two for oikawa but he couldn't place his finger on where he'd heard it before, except maybe his boyfriend.

"well are you gonna come inside or what 'samu- is that oikawa toru?" suna screamed, or what sounded like screaming coming from him, and oikawa looked between him and osamu.

"do not tell me you didn't tell them." oikawa deadpanned at his boyfriend, who immediately flushed with embarrassment. "well i-"

oikawa swore to himself if they had one more interruption he would take the next flight back to argentina and never return home.

"yer fuckin' kidding me right, 'samu?" atsumu laughed, a crazed sort of look on his face that would've terrified oikawa had he not seen a look of defeat on that same man just months ago.

"i'm not sure i heard a joke, atsu-chan!" oikawa says, saccharine sweet, visible vein popping out of his forehead.

"hah? what'd you say, pretty boy?" atsumu retorted, expression nearly matching oikawa's, the only difference being oikawa's fading smile and atsumu's seemingly permanent scowl. the thought reminds him of iwaizumi and he has to bite back a snort lest atsumu believe he was laughing at him.

"hah? i spoke clearly enough. suna-chan, please get your dog, don't you know they're meant to be on leashes?" oikawa bats his lashes to no avail, but suna does calmly place his hand on atsumu's shoulder.

"i should've know this is how you'd both react." osamu sighed, shaking his head with faux disappointment. "toru, don't be rude. 'tsumu, don't be bitter because you lost. now can we go in so toru can see our new home?"

"our?!" suna and atsumu asked incredulously, in sync, oddly enough. had osamu really not told anyone they were together, or that they were moving in together?

"i- i mean i knew you were seein' someone but ya didn't tell me yer seein' him." atsumu said, like he had just witnessed the worst betrayal of his life, and maybe in a way he had.

"well i woulda told ya if i thought you could be civil. can ya please give him a chance so we can have a good housewarmin' party, and welcome toru back home properly?" osamu pleaded. if his twin brother, the most important person in his life, could accept his boyfriend for who he was without letting their rivalry get in the way, he thinks he could die happy.

atsumu has never once approved any of osamu's previous partners. he always says there's something wrong with them, whether it be that they're not looking for what osamu is, or that they're lazy, or perhaps it's simply because he just didn't like them. and despite that osamu thinks his brothers meddling habits were annoying, atsumu had never been wrong about any of his inhibitions about people he dated in the past. osamu really hopes atsumu will approve of oikawa because if he didn't he thinks his heart might break on behalf of both his other halves.

to his relief, atsumu agrees to start over with oikawa, and holds out his hand for oikawa to shake.

"hey, i'm atsumu, osamu's twin brother. it's nice to meet you." he says, and though it doesn't sound sincere, it's enough to squash the feelings of insecurity crawling up his chest.

oikawa returns the handshake in kind. "oikawa toru, osamu's boyfriend. it's a pleasure to be able to meet his family." atsumu must've forgotten his manners in the time it took for him to argue with oikawa, because he didn't properly introduce suna to oikawa.

suna coughed, before waving lazily at oikawa. "yo, im suna. i'm dating the dipshit who forgot about me." and if oikawa let out a snicker that he hid behind his hand as he watched them argue, no one saw him.

finally, atsumu ushered them inside.

upon entering, oikawa realized this was more than a housewarming party, more than meeting osamu's parents, and more than just being home again. osamu had planned an entire 'welcome home' party, just for him. he could've cried at the sentiment.

could've.

but alas, his friends from highschool would never let him have his way.

he was greeted with- and he's not exaggerating here- the biggest poster he's ever seen in his entire life. on the poster were the words 'daddy's home'.

oikawa would know who did it even if he hadn't seen them proudly smiling next to the poster, iwaizumi begrudgingly standing next to them. he noticed a lot of his friends from highschool were present, even friends he didn't know osamu knew. the amount of thought and effort he put into this entire party, including reaching out to his friends and family, meant even more to him than any volleyball game he'd ever played. well, maybe not any, but probably most. he felt loved for the first time in a long time, and it was almost overwhelming.

he greeted his friends immediately with tight hugs and teasing remarks.

"still out of a job makki-chan? i'm sure the local garbage dump is hiring!"

"iwa-chan, have you gotten shorter since the last time i saw you? i knew you were getting old!"

"matsu-chan, why would you work with the dead when you're already halfway there yourself?"

he made his way through every friend from shoyo to, surprisingly, tobio-chan and ushiwaka. if he was hesitant to speak with them, he didn't let it show on his face in fear of letting osamu think he wasn't enjoying himself.

speaking of, he should probably find his boyfriend and give him a hug and a kiss to thank him for doing this.

he spotted osamu talking to who he assumed was one of his old highschool team mates. he walked over, sliding an arm around his shoulder. osamu finished his sentence before turning to oikawa.

"having fun?" he smiled, and oikawa thinks his knees might've given out if he hadn't gripped osamu's shoulder tightly.

"so much. thank you, really." he kissed osamu's cheek, knocking his nose on osamu's temple. "wanna introduce me to this guy?"

"oh, right. uh kita-san, this is my boyfriend-" osamu started, but kita promptly finished his sentence for him.

"oikawa toru. i watched him beat your brother to a pulp on the olympic court, osamu, of course i know who he is." kita smiled, and oikawa suddenly understood why osamu talked of his old captain so much.

kita had an aura to him that made him seem extremely welcoming. he almost looked like coming home after a long day, and just resting on the couch, not thinking of anything. kita spoke relatively quietly, enough to be heard, but certainly not in the tone oikawa spoke in, which was loud and more eccentric.

"it's a pleasure to meet you, kita-chan! osamu talks so much of you, i hoped to meet you!" oikawa said, he was truthfully nervous to meet kita, as he was worried he wouldn't like him based on the olympics alone, but it appears his worries were unfounded as only atsumu seemed to have a grudge against him.

"likewise, oikawa-san." kita smiled again before excusing himself. oikawa shouted after him to tell him not to be so formal. osamu laughed, and told him that's just how he is.

"by the way toru, my parents are asking for you." osamu spoke softly, as if oikawa was a kitten who may be scared off by a noise too loud. perhaps he was because he felt a chill go down his spine at the thought of meeting osamu's parents.

it's not so much that he didn't want to, but the idea of being so serious with someone that you meet their family, eat dinner with them, speak with familiarity towards them, and even begin to be accepted as a member of their family is a foreign subject to oikawa. it scares him, the unknown that is. the not knowing if you're really going to be accepted, the not knowing if they'll even approve of him. what if they make him and osamu break up, what if they think he can't make osamu happy, because he thinks he can make him happy and-

osamu snaps his fingers infront of oikawa's face.

"toru, are you alright?" osamu asks, and of course oikawa's fine, but being nervous was never quite his forte, and so it consumes his entire body until it forces him to submit to the world that isn't connected to the one he's in. it's not anything to worry about but he's certainly grateful that osamu always seems to be there when he needs to snap out of it.

"i'm fine i just- i need water and then we can go talk to them, yeah?" oikawa didn't sound like himself, voice coming out raspy and dry. he dragged osamu to the kitchen to grab a bottle of water, proceeding to finish it in 24 seconds flat. osamu would've been impressed if he wasn't more worried trying to figure out what had oikawa on the tip of his toes.

"toru, why are you so worried? i don't want to pressure you into doing anything but i thought we both agreed it was a good idea." osamu asked, worry lacing his tone like a vine crawling up a fence.

"oh god, samu," oikawa kissed him quickly on the mouth. "it's not that it's just, i've never- i don't know what to expect. i've never made it this far." oikawa says, softly as to not alert anyone else that he's in the middle of an anxious meltdown. he doesn't know what he'd do if he made anyone think he was ruining his own housewarming/welcome home party. luckily, he doesn't have to worry about it, because osamu is looking at him with empathy and understanding and yet it's not condescending at all. it makes him feel so welcomed, like he's receiving the first hug in his entire life.

"i think they're gonna love you, darlin'," osamu kisses oikawa's knuckles, alarmingly close to his ring finger. "mama already talks about you like she's known you a thousand lifetimes."

oikawa thinks he might've actually cried this time, but if he did, osamu wiped the tears away before he or anyone else noticed.

"if they don't like me i'm keeping the apartment." oikawa jokes, and kisses osamu yet again, lets the kiss linger.

maybe oikawa should've warned osamu about his asshole friends, who can now be heard whooping and cheering. maybe osamu should've warned him about his asshole brother, who is now pulling the two of them apart while matsukawa and hanamaki loudly 'boo' at him.

atsumu doesn't even say a word, just scowls at them and walks away. several inarizaki alumni look at them apologetically, but oikawa pays them no mind. instead, he takes osamu's hand and squeezes twice. 'i'm ready' he says 'i love you'. osamu nods, quickly scans the crowd to find his family, and leads oikawa off, leaving him no time to change his mind even if he wanted to.

he won't. oikawa toru is not a quitter. he sort of wishes he was at the moment though.

when he first lays eyes on osamu's mother, he immediately sees the resemblance. they have the same eye shape, the same beautifully sloped nose, and the perfectly structured face shape. she's blonde though. osamu portrays himself like his father. pouty lips, strong stance, and he has the same brown hair that osamu let come back after he grew tired if the silver.

"hello, my name is oikawa toru, and i am dating your son." oikawa doesn't think he's ever been this formal and stiff in his life. he reminds himself of tobio-chan, he thinks as he bows deeply infront of osamu's mother and father.

"oh, toru sweetie, stand up. and please, call me naho! none of that formal nonsense, not when yer as important to our 'samu as ya are." naho says, as though she really has known him all his life. in a way, it makes the uncomfortable feeling he has in his chest disappear, if only slightly for the time being.

"it's mitsuo, son. relax." he claps a hand on oikawa's shoulder and he stands up straight, looking them both in the face much more clearly. osamu's father has the same calm demeanor he seeks out more often than not in osamu. it makes his anxiety dissipate completely, and he feels he could have a good conversation with them. luckily for him, his and naho's personalities are quite similar, and they get along great. he even manages to pull a smile out of mitsuo a few times as he cracks a joke or two.

he and osamu end up talking to osamu's parents for the rest of the party, relocating to the couch that, according to osamu, came with the place. oikawa doesn't believe him in the slightest. oikawa finds he should've never freaked out because osamu's parents are the most accepting and kind people he's ever met, and it's no surprise that's where osamu comes from.

oikawa wishes he had parents like osamu's. they haven't talked much about his relationship with them, but it's been decided there's no point in wasting their time because oikawa definitely already knows the outcome.

oikawa thinks that since they have osamu's parents, who welcomed him with the most open arms and hearts, they don't need to worry about such things anyway. he thinks he can find peace back in japan without worrying of how other people think of him because he finds a support system in all of the miya's, even atsumu.

atsumu came over and spoke with oikawa while they were sitting on the couch. the two get along nicely enough, and oikawa feels that if he just has a few more chances to prove himself to atsumu, they'll have a great relationship.

meeting osamu's parents may have been the best thing he's ever done.

even though he had to hear 'daddy's home' by usher about 4,500 times that night, oikawa doesn't think he would've wanted to be welcomed home any other way, and certainly not with any other people.

later, after everyone's finally left, when oikawa lays in osamu's arms on the couch, glasses of wine in hand as they toast to their new home and blooming life together, oikawa will whisper sweet nothings to osamu over hushed smiles and giddy laughter, and osamu will return in kind with his own words and smiles.

"has anyone ever told you that you're the best thing the world has to offer, 'samu?" oikawa would say after his 3rd glass, and osamu will just tell him he's drunk, but the tips of his ears as oikawa just laughs will give him away. oikawa bites the same ears playfully, as if he can't resist.

"i love you," oikawa says, sleepily resting his forehead against osamu's. "i love you, i love you, i love you, i love you, i love you so much." osamu laughs, full and loud. if oikawa had everything his way, he'd have osamu's laugh pressed onto vinyl so he could listen to it whenever he wanted.

"you know i love you more, baby." oikawa doesn't like that answer, so he pouts and flicks osamu's nose. "no, i love you more." they go back and forth like that for what seems like hours. oikawa thinks he could talk to osamu, repeating the same words over and over, for the rest of his life. isn't that a scary thought?

if oikawa finally folds, and allows osamu to win just because he wants to see his victorious smile before he kisses him properly for the first time all night, no one will know anyway.
