Work Text:
Adam awoke to the sound of something blaring. He tossed and turned over to Kim's side of the bed and felt with his hand that she was already gone. While grumbling, he opened his eyes towards the door and in the door frame was Makayla. She was in a Chicago Police ball cap, holding a clipboard, and the source of that loud noise that woke him up - a whistle in her mouth.
"What on earth are you doing bumble bee?"
“I'm getting you ready to pass your tests. Come on Dad, let's go.”
He caught a glimpse of Kim standing behind her trying to hide her laughter with her arms crossed. He glanced over at the clock and saw it was only 7:30 am. “Don't you have school or something today,” Adam asked while rubbing his eyes.
“Not on Saturday Dad! And Mom said she needed my help getting you moving today.”
“Oh did she? Fiiiine, let me get changed and I'll meet you in the kitchen.” He begrudgingly threw on a pair of shorts and a hoodie and stopped quickly in the bathroom to brush his teeth before he got yelled at for moving too slow. Adam walked into the kitchen and Kim handed him a bowl of oatmeal and a banana. “Oh thank you,” he responded sarcastically as he gave her a quick kiss. He was pretty sure she was the mastermind behind this early morning plot.
In between spoonfuls of oatmeal he asked, “so where did you get all of this stuff?”
“Uncle Kevin gave it to me. I have this super cool stopwatch too.”
“Oh boy, I’ll be sure to thank him for this the next time I see him. What’s on the clipboard?”
Mack brought it closer to her so he couldn’t read what was on the paper. “Mom wrote down everything that you have to do to pass the tests to go back to work.”
Adam just nodded as he finished his breakfast. “Let’s get a move on it slowpoke,” Makayla pushed him one last time.
“She’s been hanging around you-know-who too much.”
“She is and wait until you see the flash cards they made together for the written test.” Adam just rolled his eyes. “Good luck,” Kim said with a smug smile on her face as she helped push him out the door and followed them out to the backyard.
“We do both of these first two things in gym class, so you should have no problems,” Makayla said very confidently.
“Haha, I appreciate your confidence in me Mack.” Up first was the sit and reach test and he passed that with flying colors.
“Now you have to do 30 sit ups in a minute. I’ll time you. 1…2…3…GO.” Adam accomplished the task with a few seconds to spare. “Good job Dad!”
“Thanks kiddo. Okay, what’s next?”
“Mom said you have to do the bench press with Uncle Kevin at the gym, so the 1.5 mile run.”
“I’m nervous about this one, not gonna lie.” He’d been running about three times a week ever since he was cleared to run and working up to this distance, but he was always too afraid to look at the time. “Tell me when to go.”
She started her stopwatch and yelled, “GO.”
Adam made it back to the starting point and in between catching his breath, “what was my time Mack?”
“15 minutes, 37 seconds.”
“Ughhhhhhhh darn it,” he expressed as he let out his frustration. “I have to reduce that by like a minute.”
Kim had moved up to the alley during his run and chimed in with a voice of encouragement, “Adam, it’s your first timing of it. You’ll get it.”
Makayla walked over and patted his back and followed in her mother’s footsteps. “Don’t worry Dad, you’ll get it, I believe in you.”
“Thanks Drill Sergeant Pla...I mean Makayla. I really appreciate your help this morning.”
“Let’s go get you some water,” Kim added as she started motioning him towards the house. WIth her arm on his back, “Hey I know you’ve been frustrated with the pace of your rehab, but I’m pretty sure with that little spitfire in charge, she’ll have you passing these tests in no time.”
Adam nodded and pulled her in tighter. “With you two by my side, I feel like I can do anything.”
