Two hot, shame-filled tears stole past her lashes and rolled down to break against Sean’s hand. She was weak, and he was broken. He must have hated her, too, for her obstinacy in not letting Marion rest in peace, for making him carry Marion out of that lighthouse on his back, for all the times she nodded him on and all the things she bade him do. He would say this was all her design, but he had been the one to steel her when he asked if they would stand for this, and it was his strength at her back that kept propelling her through the dirty work they did. Even when they held each other because they were such pathetic creatures and they could not wait until they had Marion to love, they must have hated each other’s weakness, but they never admitted it to themselves.
Marion’s footsteps stopped, very near. She could feel her own warmth drawn toward his lack. He said, “Don’t close your eyes this time.”
