Chapter 1: Borderline

Chapter Text

Being awoken like this was strange. It was like being in a void, an emptiness that wrapped around him like a blanket keeping his body calm, and waking up to a warm embrace letting his eyes open. Though when he was in the void he didn’t actually have a body, when he looked down there was nothing, no hands or feets, just an empty black space. If he did have a body it would be what he was looking at now, in a reflection of what he believes is a store.

He doesn’t actually know, what he does know is that this era is far different from what he is sure he came from. Those who pass by him are wearing untraditional outfits, using words that he doesn’t truly understand, someone saying ‘whatever dummy,’ and he has no clue what the hell that means.

His feet move way before he can think, he tries to think of places that feel familiar but nothing does. The only thing going through his mind are his brothers, his brothers that have been taken from him, and he can’t help but start freaking out as he reaches an opening. A park.

It’s pretty much empty and he can’t help but drag himself to a nearby bench. Dropping his head onto his lap, his mind running through all of the possibilities of what could be happening to them at this moment. He doesn’t know how long he was like this, hunched over in a random park, he’s sure that the humans around him are staring but it doesn’t change the fact that he doesn’t know where his siblings are. His body starts to shake and he doesn’t know what this feeling is called, this nauseating churn in his stomach that makes him feel like he might throw up at any second. He feels so helpless, as all he knows is that it was a damn sorcerer who had taken them. One with bright white hair, and glasses covering his eyes, it doesn’t matter, not when Choso will have him dead for his actions.

He keeps his head down, his breathing slowly fixing itself, but he doesn’t bother to look up, not even when a small figure is placing itself in front of him.

“Excuse me,” a soft voice draws him to look up, “are you okay?” the small boy has bright pink hair and Choso can’t help himself from frowning. Looking around there isn’t anyone who the young child could have shown up with. Turning back his attention to the young boy he can see that he’s holding a bouncy ball, his knees are scuffed, and his clothes are slightly dirty, but his face is holding a bright smile that makes Choso feel something in his heart twitch.

“Yes, do you know where we are” he tries to not make it a question, and thankfully the small boy is nodding in understanding, “we’re in Nishikicho Park mister!” and again he feels his heart tug at the boy's cuteness. He watches as the small kid moves to sit on his right, his legs swinging as he’s too short to reach the ground, “my grandpa says the trees look like my hair,” small fingers pointing to the blob of pink, and he’s right the leaves are the same shade of pink as the boys hair.

“They are um..-”

“Itadori Yuji!” the small boy happily swaying against Choso, and he is honestly amazed how the child is acting like they’ve known each for years. “Your grandfather is right Yuji,” and he receives a bright smile from Yuji. “He says my daddy had the same color when he was younger,” Yuji’s small voice carries with ease and he doesn’t understand it but something is drawing him to take  care of the child next to him.

“You never told me your name mister,” bright brown eyes are staring at him, and his mind can’t stop himself from going back to his siblings. He tries not to show the inner turmoil as Yuji is too young to be comforting a stranger about adult issues. “My name is Kamo Chousou, but you can just call me Choso,” the young boy gives his name a nod, rolling the name on his tongue a few times. After a couple minutes when the boy seems content he’s sliding off the bench, giving him a short bow, standing up with a bright smile face and Choso can’t help the smile crawl onto his own face at the boy's sweet nature.

“I have to go before my grandpa gets mad,” Yuji’s voice shy as he looks up at Choso, “but I’ll be here tomorrow so maybe we can play together,” and he now is fighting himself from just keeping the boy as his younger brother, waving at the small boy, tears fighting to stream down his face as the boy throws a ‘Choso-shi’ towards him and his voice cracks as he gives back a “be safe Yuji,” watching as pink hair moves further away.

A feeling of emptiness enters his body as he realizes that he’s alone again. He doesn’t know where to go, he has nowhere to go, his brothers had been taken and he has no fucking clue where they could be. And he can’t help but beat himself up over the fact that as their older brother he should be the one looking for them. But he has no leads to go off of, the shitty sorcerer didn’t speak as he grabbed them and when he got lost the person who found him looked like a regular human. Now he is actually crying in the middle of the park, the sun already setting and he is bathed in darkness, streetlights being the only source of light for him to see.

There isn’t much for him to go off, he knows that the sorcerers have a school for their bullshit, but where it was located was beyond him. He does know that the shitty white haired sorcerer has most likely confined them to a small room, hidden in darkness and away from the world. Sorcerers have the habit of fearing things that they have no true control over, they had no idea the lengths of what Choso and his siblings could do, hell he’s not even sure he does either. But it doesn’t give them the right to hide them in fear. Like feral animals that would bite their hands off if given the opportunity.

He finally decides to get off the bench and venture around, he knows that Nishikicho is located in Sendai, though he doesn’t remember when over the years he and his siblings were moved to this side of Japan and it makes him shiver at the loss of time. The buildings around him are tall, so tall that he doesn’t know the purpose of making them look like that. They don’t carry any true function or purpose besides being big and bright in his opinion.

So he finds himself wandering the street, his attention shifting over the various new things popping out at him. Food vendors attempt to lure him in but he ignores them, and he sees girls whispering when he passes, the small snippet of humans he has seen on this street is giving him a huge headache. So he walks, walks, and walks until he hopes he can run into anything, something that he can kill. When he does it’s a curse, well it looks like a sad excuse of a curse, small with wings, and it looks something like a bird, an ugly bird. It flutters its wings at him when it senses his cursed energy, and within a second his piercing blood is cutting it in half.

It doesn’t really satisfy his bloodlust. But it is enough for him to attempt to find any evidence of Jujutsu sorcerers with their ugly uniforms. He truly has no idea how a school like that can let their students look dumb. Without thinking his mind goes back to Yuji, the small boy had no cursed energy, but there was something lurking within him. Choso couldn’t place his finger on it, actually he couldn’t even pinpoint it, but there was something the boy had that made him nervous.

Like he had a potential to be something like a sorcerer, but it wasn’t that, it was as if he had the potential to be a curse. No, Yuji couldn’t be both, but it was there, a nagging feeling that the boy was like him. A half curse. But that made no sense. Yuji didn’t have cursed energy, and he obviously couldn’t see Choso’s as he happily sat next to the half curse. He tries to push these thoughts down, as he truly has no idea if any of these things are true, maybe he’s projecting these thoughts onto the small boy. Since he’s the first interaction he’s had since being freed from his prison.

He moves on from the dead curse and Sendai gives him nothing about the sorcerers, in fact he only really sees curses wandering around, and it only gives a motivation to annihilate them on sight. Hours go by and he has made note of the things that he’s taken notice of, one human’s are constantly working even during the late night, two his own clothes stand out, and three he’s back where he started.

Without having a need for sleep there isn’t much for him to do to pass the time, he doesn’t know where to start and he hasn’t seen any sorcerers. Though the useless shits take forever to jump into action anyways so his best bet would be to simply destroy shit. But it wouldn’t be a good idea because the white haired man that had taken his siblings had such an immense amount of power that Choso knew the pathetic school would be sending him out to deal with him, and he would rather get a look at the others' technique before jumping straight in.

Not being able to sleep did have its benefits, as he hadn’t realized so much time had already passed that he was seeing a small pink haired child running by himself to the park. The boy sees him from afar, running up to him with the bouncy ball once again and stops only a foot away. A bright smile etched onto the tiny face and Choso is giving his best smile in return.

“Choso-shi you made it!,” brown eyes staring up at him and he has to fight the urge to lift the small boy up into the air, “would you like to play kickball?” and without even waiting he’s saying yes. If anyone else had asked him to play a child's game he would have scoffed in their face and flicked them off, but the idea of telling the pinkette ‘no’ makes him want to bash his head into a wall. So like a loser he’s playing with the young boy and he notices how the other doesn’t get tired, constantly running around, and Choso is 98% sure a human child would usually be burned out by now. But Yuji keeps going, laughing as he kicks the ball far, making Choso actually move around to grab it, and when other kids and their families have started to exit the park, Yuji is happy to keep up with the half-curse.

It’s something that adds to Choso’s gut feeling that there is something more to the small boy, and that unnerving feeling is back of the potential of the pinkette being something more than human. Being something like Choso. He’s brought out of his thoughts when the boy grabs the ball, running up to him to give his goodbyes, “my grandpa says I can’t stay out when it’s dark,” his body language showing that he was shy and the half-curse can’t help himself from smiling down at the boy.

Now that he's actually paying attention he sees that the sun is almost gone again, meaning that Yuji had spent the whole day with him playing kickball. He turns back to the small boy, where he receives a shy smile as Yuji is looking at him with a sad eyes. As if he doesn’t want the day to end, and Choso himself also doesn’t want to give Yuji up so soon, but he knows it’s from the loneliness of not having his brothers.

“How about I walk you home Yuji,” and the shy smile morphs into a wide happy one, “that way you’re not alone,” the pinkette’s entire mood improving as he holds onto Choso’s pale cold hand and the small warmth that Yuji carries feels as if it moves throughout his entire body. He feels his big brother duties activate and he thinks he might be finally losing his mind from being alone.

Yuji ends up dragging him to a small apartment complex almost five minutes away from the park and he thinks it’s a very convenient location since the boy appears to have high amounts of physical energy to let up. He watches as the small boy takes out a key attached to a necklace that he had tucked under his shirt and opens the door. Finally letting go of Choso’s hand he receives a happy smile and he’s sure that he could die of happiness.

“Thank you Choso-shi!” and the small boy is closing the door behind him, and Choso can feel tears streaming down his face as all he can think about is the young boy calling him onii-chan. His mind runs rampant as he feels as if the small boy is like his own siblings, and in a way he knows that deep down Yuji isn’t human.

He does the only rational thinking process anyone can come to and he decides that he needs to follow the young boy. Somebody has information and he doesn’t care who, but someone knows exactly what the hell Yuji is.
