Walking Disaster

Summary:

Jake insists on going with Heather when she volunteers for a hunting trip.

Work Text:

When Heather volunteered to go on the hunting trip, Jake immediately tried to shut the idea down. “You’re pregnant,” he pointed out.

She rolled her eyes fondly at her boyfriend. “And you’re weirdly overprotective, Jake Green. We’ll be fine.”

“We?” he asked, huffing out a laugh.

Heather raised an eyebrow. “We both know you’re not letting me go alone - it’d be nice to have you with me. And despite the fact that I am five months along, I can still hunt. Try and stop me.”

“I know better than that after knowing you for so long.” Jake sighed and looked skyward. “Fine, we can go,” he acquiesced.

She cheered excitedly and rushed over to kiss him before going to find supplies so they could be on their way. The world would never be what it was once but they were figuring it out and getting back on their feet.

Jake couldn’t help but panic and worry about the worst case scenarios, his mind running a mile a minute ever since Heather handed over the pregnancy test a month and a half earlier. After what happened to April, the hellish winter they all barely survived, he couldn’t help it. He was lucky Heather understood but she had limited patience.

“Be careful - the weather’s not looking good!” someone called after them.

“Thanks!” Jake called back as he ushered Heather out of the building (after leaving Jimmy and Bill in charge for the day).

Snow started to fall as soon as they got in the car (just their luck) and Jake looked out the windshield in concern, memories of the last disastrous trip racing through his mind. By the time they started heading into the woods, the snow was falling even harder. “Relax,” a laughing Heather ordered.

“Maybe we should call it and go back home. It’s not worth one of us getting hurt, especially you.”

Heather pulled him closer to her and stared him dead in the eyes. “Johnston Jacob Green Junior, I will kick your ass. Don’t test me.”

He snorted. “I would never. But seriously, I don’t think this is a good idea.”

“There’s a cabin about a mile away. If it starts getting bad, we’ll trudge over there and spend the night. Happy?” She batted her eyelashes at him.

“Let’s go!” They only made it about ten minutes through the rapidly falling snow before realizing the trip was a wash. An annoyed Heather scowled at a flake as it fell on her gloved hand. “Damn it, it is getting worse. I don’t think we’re going to find anything out here today so let’s go to the cabin.”

Jake sighed in relief. “Thank you.”

“This is Jake Green’s bad luck striking again,” she teased as they started making their way north towards the cabin.

“Oh, sure, blame me,” he grumbled.

“Jake Green, walking disaster strikes again. We love them, though.”

“I love you too.” He grinned at her. By the time they made it to the cabin, the snow was starting to fall even harder.

Jake started a fire while Heather curled up under a blanket. After he finished, he sat down next to her, laying a palm on her stomach, and they cuddled up together. “This is nice,” Heather murmured.

“Let’s not do this again, though. Someone else can volunteer for the next hunting trip.” He didn’t want to put her in any more unnecessary danger.

“Works for me,” she agreed, which surprised him - she never usually gave in that quickly.

They sat in front of the fire for the rest of the day, only relaxing when the snowstorm finally ended around nine that night.

As soon as the sun started streaming in through the window the next morning, the two of them decided to make their way back to the car and head home.

The trip hadn’t been the most productive and had quickly gone to shit but at least Jake and Heather had fun.
