What’s Precious

Summary:

Something I wrote a couple years ago and never posted. Hummy asks Ellen if she misses being a cat.

Work Text:

“Si~ren. Do you ever miss being a cat, nya?”

It was a bit of a sudden question and there was almost a hint of melancholy in Hummy’s usually chipper voice as she posed it. It was true that Ellen hadn’t been able to transform back into her original form ever since her collar broke and she had become a precure. It was true that Hummy had been the catalyst for that. Did she hold herself responsible for what happened that day?

“Maybe sometimes, just a little,” Ellen answers honestly; she couldn’t deny it had taken some getting used to being in a human form all the time. “I don’t regret it, though, if that’s what you’re worried about.”

“Really? You’re sure?”

“Definitely sure. After all, with this body, I can do things I never could before, like play guitar or attend school. And… with this body, I was able to protect what’s precious to me.”

“‘What’s precious to you’?” Hummy echoes curiously.

“Like the worlds we live in, the music that fills them, the friends I’ve made… and most importantly, the one I’ve had all along.”

Ellen walks across the stage, plopping down on the wooden music bench beside her dear friend.

“Hummy. We may not stand side by side anymore, but I can still walk beside you wherever you go.”

She reaches down and scoops Hummy into her arms, drawing her close to her chest.

“We may not be the same size anymore, but I can still curl up against you and listen to your heartbeat.”

Bowing her head, she places a gentle, reassuring kiss on the little cat’s forehead.

“We may not look the same anymore, but I can still be with you and see your smile every day, and that’s the most precious thing to me of all.”
