Chapter Text
“Can you do the one about theeuhh.. oh it’s on the tip of my tongue I swear.” Rin Rin twirled a blade of grass pinched between her index and her thumb. Pausing from sprinkling the grass onto Macaque’s forehead.
Macaque tucked his hands behind his head. Wukong had been in heaven for about five months now. It was times like this, when the scent of thousands of flowers hung in the air and the wind carried a comforting warmth, he missed the monkey king the most. The three of them would spend hours sprawled on some rock sunbathing or sitting in a field like him and Rin Rin were doing right now. Plucking the foliage and offering it to each other as meaningless gifts. It just felt like Wukong was missing out on something important. Does heaven have the rustling leaves as an ambiance to each other's laughter? Can you hide under the tree line and see the speckles of lighting trickle through the top if you’re already above the clouds?
“I could do the one about you.” Rin Rin giggled at this and resumed her task. The grass was cool. It was like he could still feel the morning dew on them despite the spring sun erasing them hours ago.
“That’s my second favorite one. Perform one of your adventures. Those are my favorites.” A breeze erased her progress as the pile flew into his hair instead.
Macaque rolled onto his stomach so he could better look at his favorite resident on Flower Fruit Mountain. “Anything specific or?” He asked while closing his eyes as if he was about to drift off.
“Well, remember when that ruffian tried to harvest our orchards so they could construct some type of something or other?”
“I remember you trying to “negotiate.” As if a simple plea would get them to fuck off.”
“And then you came! Soaring in and whacking him so hard across the face, you didn’t just break his nose, you broke it off!” Rin Rin had been sitting with her legs tucked under herself. Her left arm acted as support as she leaned over Macaque’s head. During their time lounging he wanted to roll over and kiss the back of her hand but some invisible force held him back. As she spoke however, she mimicked his position and laid down too. They were finally at eye level and properly face to face.
“He was going to-“ Macaque chewed on his lip in anger at the thought.
“Do unsavory things?” She finished his sentence for him. Slightly censoring things.
“Yeah. To you. Specifically.”
Rin Rin expected him to be proud of his triumph. That’s how Wukong reacted whenever she brought up a tale of his exploits. The difference is Wukong's stories always start when he whips out his staff and engages in the scene. Unlike Wukong, Macaque could hear what that demon was saying to Rin Rin long before he had even arrived. He didn’t get to just live with the pleasure of literally beating the snot out of the guy. He had to listen as Rin Rin’s heart beat increased. The shakiness of her voice as she spoke. He couldn’t get there any faster. His expression was like he just tasted something bitter and it wouldn’t leave his tongue.
She reached out to hold the shadow’s face. Her thumb caressing where his vibrant red marking stopped. “That’s why I want my hero’s story to be remembered. You should absolutely make a shadowplay about it!”
Macaque placed a hand around the one cupping his face. Gently he kissed her palm. As much as they miss Wukong, sometimes Macaque was happy that he got with the alone time with Rin Rin.
