Summary
Olly Harding is used to a quiet life. An ordered existence, where he's on top of his university work, eschews parties and other sorts of things, and is dating an English Literature student at Alderbury University... He likes his life.
Until he agrees to help his Pastoral Tutor out by working through his summer in the village of Millsbury, as a Site Supervisor for a training excavation that her family's business, 'The Centre Of Historical & Archaeological Research', runs for students between the ages of 13 and 18 every summer, when she and her brother are let down at the last minute.
And everything that Olly thought he liked about his life, the plans that he had, the quiet needs and wants that occupy his brain during the few moments of respite he allows himself, are thrown into disarray when he's put in charge of Trench Two... and he meets his tutor's precociously annoying granddaughter and her two childhood best friends.
