Chapter Text
Being a police officer comes with many risks. Tim Bradford and Lucy Chen were no strangers to this. When they started dating, they made a pact: they would never hide physical injuries from each other. They couldn’t always help with the mental toll of their job, but they can be there to help the physical wounds heal. Thankfully, Tim and Lucy haven’t had to deal with any major injuries since they started dating until now…
—
The morning started off like any other morning. Tim had spent the night at Lucy’s apartment because he promised Tamara pancakes. He woke up to find Lucy curled up onto his back, which made him smile. Waking up next to her was his favorite thing ever, and he couldn’t wait until they officially moved in together, so he could do it every morning. As he made his move to get up, he smiled thinking about the ring he has hiding at his house. He was stopped by a hand grabbing the back of his shirt.
“Timothy, don’t you dare move,” Lucy says sleepily. “There are 5 more minutes until we have to get up and I expect you to stay here the whole time.”
Tim laughs as he lays back down, pulling Lucy to his chest. He drops a soft kiss on her forehead, as she grumbles about inconsiderate boyfriends and mornings. His girlfriend was not a morning person.
Once the 5 minutes were up and Lucy’s alarm rang, they got out of bed. They make their way to the bathroom to brush their teeth and freshen up. Once they were done, they headed back to the bedroom. Lucy glances over at Tim before grabbing his shirt from the day before and putting it on.
At his raised eyebrows, Lucy glares at him and says, “Hush. It smells like you.”
Tim laughs before walking over to Lucy and engulfing her in a hug. She leans up and gives him a soft kiss which he returns affectionately. After a few seconds, she pulls away and wraps her hands around his lower back, continuing the hug.
“I can’t wait until we move in together,” she says softly.
Tim kisses her forehead softly. “Two more weeks,” he responds.
A few more seconds pass before Tim pulls away and snakes his hand down Lucy’s forearm to grab her hand. “Come on babe, I promised your puppy pancakes.,” he says.
Tim and Lucy make their way to the kitchen to find said puppy sitting at the island, drinking a cup of coffee.
“About damn time,” Tamara says. “I made coffee and got all the ingredients ready. I don’t have all morning, I have class Dadford.”
While Lucy laughs at the banter and nickname, Tim grumbles as he starts making pancakes. Lucy and Tamara talk softly about the upcoming move, discussing how the younger woman is going to decorate her room at Tim’s house. Tim smiles softly at their conversation. He could get used to mornings like this.
Once the pancakes finish, Tim serves them to the ladies before serving himself. While they eat, they chat a bit about their upcoming move. Once they’re done, Tamara does the dishes while Lucy and Tim make sure they have everything they need in their respective bags.
“See you guys later! Don’t forget, it’s pizza and movie night!” Tamara says excitedly.
“We wouldn’t miss it for the world!” Lucy replies, matching Tamara’s enthusiasm.
“See you later kid,” Tim says as he walks out the door after Lucy.
Once Tim and Lucy get to the station, they exchange a quick kiss and their usual “stay safe out there” before heading into the station. Reluctantly, they let go of each other’s hand before going their separate ways: Tim to his office and Lucy to the locker room to change for roll call. Little did they know, pizza and a movie were not happening tonight…
—
Lucy and Aaron were riding together. They were responding to an argument at a pub. Lucy and Aaron have done this hundreds of times, the former even more. They go to the pub to find the owner trying to mediate and calm down two guys arguing. The larger man was standing in front of a woman, as if trying to shield her from the smaller man. Despite the owner’s best efforts, the two did not calm down.
“I SAW THE WAY YOU TOUCHED MY GIRLFRIEND,” the larger man shouts.
The smaller man cowers slightly. “I swear it was an accident. I tripped over the table leg. I would never intentionally hurt anyone, especially a woman,” he pleads.
“Like hell! I saw how you looked up when we walked in,” the woman says, stepping out from behind the large man.
“Okay, that’s enough,” Lucy says loudly, holding her hands up, stepping in between the men. “Ma’am if you and your boyfriend can take a breath and give your statements to my partner, I will deal with the gentleman here.”
“Gentleman my ass!” the woman yells.
What happened next was a blur. The woman pulled out a small handgun from her bra and aimed to shoot at the smaller man. Lucy and Aaron instantly reacted. Aaron tackled the woman as she pulled the trigger. The bullet ricocheted off a table and grazed Lucy’s right arm. Lucy was momentarily stunned by the pain. Out of the corner of her eye, she sees the larger man reach for something from his crotch region. Trying to block out the pain as best as she can, Lucy reaches for her taser as the man pulls out a gun. He pulls the trigger twice as Lucy tases him. They both hit the floor with a loud thunk.
Ignoring the pain surging throughout her body, Lucy uses the last of her strength to scoot close enough to push the gun out of the man’s reach before rolling back over and collapsing. She vaguely hears Aaron’s panicked voice over the radio: “7-Adam-19, officer down, unconscious and breathing. Requesting an RA, immediate back-up, and a supervisor to our location.” Then, the world goes black.
When she finally comes to, the first thing Lucy feels is pain and a lot of pressure. She tries to sit up but is stopped by a paramedic. Once her eyes start to focus, she realizes it’s Bailey.
“Hey, you’re okay,” she says quickly. “We’re trying to stop the bleeding before we transfer you.”
“How-bad,” Lucy manages to say through the pain.
“Your vest caught the bullet to your chest. Aaron said a bullet grazed your right arm, and you have a GSW with no exit wound to your left shoulder. We’re going to take you to St. Stephens,” Bailey says.
Lucy manages to focus her vision a bit more. She sees Aaron hovering near Bailey. John, Celina, Nyla and Grey are surveying the scene and taking witness statements.
“Aaron-” Lucy rasps out. “Call Angela. Tim... Tim is with her.”
She sees him nod as she begins to slip away. She hears someone say “stay with me”, but her eyes roll into her head and she allows the darkness to take her once again.
