"Race.”
Race hummed, not looking up at her from where he was counting his money. He kept his face neutral, resisting the urge to wince. He was three pennies short, which meant he had to either a) ask someone for help, b) find a poker game to join and risk losing more money or c) just sleep on the streets. He didn’t want to ask anyone for money, he always felt bad about that. Joining poker games was usually pretty safe, but he wasn’t in the mood right now. Not after one of the newsies had stayed home sick at the lodging house, the headlines were slow, the weather was cold, and he’d had to skip meals. Streets it was.

Percy steadied himself under her weight. He had no idea who this girl was, but she clearly knew him. A part of him wanted to lean into the embrace and pull her closer to his chest. But he felt that if he didn’t let go of her, something very bad would happen. Neither of them was supposed to be here, everything about the interaction felt wrong.
But there was also something strange about their embrace. He knew where she would put her hands, rest her head, and he had felt his instincts take over as soon as their two bodies had made contact.
“It’s you?” he whispered tentatively into her hair.
“Well duh, Seaweed Brain.”
