As the night changes it all

Summary:

It was a single question Kate didn't even really think about before she said it out loud and Yelena agreed. But this was before Yelena knew what really happened to her sister. But will a drink change everything or will everything be like it was before?

Work Text:

Shit, shit, shit. Did I really ask her if we wanted to grab a drink? Before I could answer the question myself she already answered herself. "Sounds nice, but first I'm going to kill Barton and then we can grab a drink, Kate Bishop." We chase each other further through the building until she nearly jumps out of the window I broke only seconds ago with one of her batons. As I look out of the window she already landed on the ground and before she continues running she looks up at me one last time. I honestly didn't know what I was thinking at that moment but instead of just taking the elevator or the stairs I slid down on the rope she used to get down. As I land on the ground, which wasn't as soft as I imagined, I look around and see Clint on the ice, and as he spotted me he gave me a quick nod. I nodded back and sooner as you could say examples arrows flew through the air until all the tracksuit mafia members were knocked out and I finally spotted my mom. I ran over to her and as soon as I arrived at her side I saw Kingpin walking towards us. I told my mom to step aside whilst I had already taken another step towards him. I shoot him with one of my arrows but he just pulls the arrow out of his chest again. He comes closer and closer until he stands directly in front of me. I take a step back as I hear a car and only seconds later he gets thrown into a toy shop through its window by the car. He and I fought again in the shop until he lay unconscious on the floor. I stepped out and saw the police car coming. It stopped across the street and the policeman that walked over to us just nodded at me before he put the handcuffs on my mom's hands. I knew that she was upset but it was the right thing and definitely what a hero should do although it's Christmas.

As I arrived back at the tree I see Yelena and Clint both standing on the ice surface talking to each other. A minute later Yelena walked away and stopped next to me "Meet me at 10 in the bar across your aunts flat." she said before continuing walking away. I gave her a thumbs up and jogged to Clint. "You okay?" "I'm still alive, so yeah I'm okay. How 'bout you?" "I'm alright, just tired." He nodded and signed me that he would call me tomorrow. Then he walked in one direction and I walked into the other back to my aunt's flat to change my clothes. I opened the door and was greeted by Lucky. I pet his head before I close the door and walk into the bedroom to open the closet. I pull out the suit with the roses pattern and lay it on the bed. I sit down and place my head in my palms, this was an exciting day but if Yelena wanted to kill Clint why didn't she do it when she had the chance? I start taking off my shoes and suit so that I can pack them away after I got dressed for the drink with Yelena. As I look at the alarm clock I realize that I have like five minutes left and so I grab my boots and put them on, on my way downstairs with Lucky following me. I open the front door and walk over to the bar. I open the door and the first person I see is Yelena petting a dog. She looks up and waves me over. But I couldn't move since I was in shock of how, am I even allowed to say this, pretty she looked. She had opened her hair and wore her green coat again. As I finally notice my surroundings again I walk over to the table she sits on.

I sit down across from her at the table and Lucky and the other dog starts sniffing at each other. "Is this your dog?" "Yeah, this is Fanny. I see you brought Lucky too" I shrug my shoulders and I swear there was a hidden smirk on her face. After that, we sit there in silence for a while until Yelena speaks up again: " Why didn't you put this arrow in my head back on the rooftop, not that you could've killed me or stuff but I'm curious Kate Bishop." "I think it had something to do with a story Clint told me earlier that evening, about how the best shot he ever took was the one he didn't. I saw the same look he described to me in his story on your face if not even more." She looked to the ground and nodded "Do you know who his story was about?" "Your sister, he was sent to take her out but made a different call." Since she had looked up again I looked into her eyes and saw tears. "She meant a lot to you, didn't she?" Yelena nodded and before she could react I stood up and sat next to her on the bench "Tell me something about her." She looked surprised but it seemed like she started thinking about what she could tell me about her sister.

"Natasha was the most humorous person I ever knew, she was the stronger one from the both of us and always tried to protect me even if she got hurt doing it. But she was also really stubborn and always wanted to do the right thing. I honestly think she never really learned how to handle the trauma she got from the red room because she would've been too stubborn to ask for help. The last time I spoke to her she told me that she felt like she had wiped out all the red in her ledger and as if she could live a more peaceful life now without all the things from the past still bothering her. She told me that she had nightmares about the things they did in our childhood and that they will probably stay forever, although the red room was now finally gone. I loved her so much and I still do." I had tears in my eyes and honestly, I didn't know what to say since I never expected her to tell this much. "Natasha sounds like an amazing person and I'm sad that I never got to meet her." "She was indeed an amazing person." The evening got by and Yelena and I talked a lot about different things and she also told me why she didn't kill Clint earlier today. I was amazed at how similar we are and that we also share the same sense of humor. As I looked at the clock the next time I realize that it's already pretty late and so I look at Yelena before I nod to the clock. She looks up and then back to me. "It may sound weird but Kate could I maybe stay in your aunt's apartment for a night before I fly back home tomorrow because I can't take these motel beds anymore?" I was surprised but agreed, because why not. I mean the apartment had two bedrooms and so she could take one of them for the night.

And so we both entered the apartment ten minutes later. I showed her around before I headed to the bedroom I slept in the last couple of weeks. Lucky jumped on the bed and watched me while I grabbed my shirt and pants. I walk into the bathroom and turn the shower on. As I step under the hot water and it rinses through my dirty hair I feel like the old me again. The old me that never questioned whether their mother made deals with a mafia boss. As I turn the water off I hear the noises of the kitchen sink and I swear to god I nearly grabbed the razor out of the shower before I remembered that I wasn't alone here. I got dressed again and as I walked into the kitchen Fanny came to me and wanted to get petted. "I'll go to bed now, you should probably do the same since it was a long day." Yelena nodded and I walked back to my room. I lay in my bed and close my eyes. I still couldn't quite process what happened today, but somehow I fell asleep because as I opened my eyes again it wasn't dark outside anymore and my alarm clock said 8 am. I trot into the kitchen and get toast and peanut butter out of the shelf over the sink. I grab myself a plate and a knife before I sit down. As soon as I opened the peanut butter glass I hear a morning voice behind me "You know Natasha used to eat peanut butter to everything. This woman loved a good peanut butter sandwich." "I mean it tastes good, have you ever tried it?" She shook her head and so I gave her the sandwich I just did for myself. "Try it" she took a bite and I think she was amazed. She sat down and as soon I finished another sandwich my phone started ringing. I mouthed "It's Clint" and picked up "Good morning Barton, you're on speaker just that you know" "Good morning Kate, I was just calling to say thank you for yesterday. Couldn't have done it without you." "No problem, is this all? I would like to finish breakfast" "Yes it is, no wait since we experienced some stuff together and all your family is gone I wanted to ask if you wanted to fly home with me for Christmas?" I thought about it for a minute and saw the look on Yelena's face as he asked me. "I would love to, but what about another guest?" ..... "See you later Kate and don't forget to bring a thicker jacket it's going to be cold." "I won't forget it, see you later."

About 6 hours later we landed at an airport in the middle of Missouri. As we got out of the plane it was already colder than in New York and I was glad that I had brought my thick winter jacket with me as Clint told me. We walked through the airport to the parking lot where he left his car before his family and he came to New York. We all got in and drove for a while until we entered a long field street that led to a huge farm. As we arrived Clint parked the car in front of the house and got out. He got his bags out of the trunk with one hand and carried the presents for his wife and kids with the other. I opened the door and we got out and I swung my backpack on my back and followed Clint inside. We were greeted by the smell of food and a boy running towards Clint. "This is Nathaniel and these are my wife Laura as well as Cooper and Lila." he kissed Laura before she came over to us and greeted us. "You must be the famous Kate Bishop, right?" I nodded and she hugged me. "And you must be Yelena, I'm so glad that I finally get to meet you. Natasha talked about you a lot." "You also knew Natasha?" Laura nodded and showed us inside the living room where the Barton kids waited for us so that they could finally open up their presents. Yelena and I sat down and Clint gave the freshly bought gifts to his children, who were so excited to finally open them. I didn't focus on what they got because I was busy looking around the room. I found a picture of Lila and a woman that has to be Natasha on the chimney and Yelena noticed it too and couldn't look away from it anymore. Lila must have noticed this because she stood up and got the picture, "This is me and my auntie Nat, you know I miss her a lot since she's been gone but at least I have the memories." She gave it to Yelena who already had tears in her eyes. "Lila could you get the vest out of your room, it's time that she gets back to her initial owner," Clint said and only minutes later Lila came back with an army surplus vest and gave it to Yelena. "Dad says it was auntie Nats and let me keep it in my room as a memorial of her but he also told me that you gave it to her the last time you saw each other and so I would like to give it back to you." Yelena looked at the vest and then at Lila and hugged her. "Thank you so much, you don't know what this means to me." Clint smiled and I finally could smile too. I guess the last evening changed everything.
