Albus Dumbledore's letter inviting Tom Riddle to interview for the Defense position after his travels abroad made it clear he had no chance of getting hired. Instead of subjecting himself to a doomed and humiliating job interview, Tom Riddle invited himself to the Slug Club’s Beltane Soiree of ‘67. He had unfinished business with Horace Slughorn.
