Ruin Our Friendship

Summary:

Snowflake and Snowfox discuss elopement after a wonderful night together…

Notes:

So I just recently finished the Winglets series, and I was intrigued about the friendship of Snowflake and Snowfox, so I decided to expand on it.

Work Text:

Snowflake opened her eyes with a pain in her neck and an ache in her head. The way she had fallen asleep was the reason for her pain, no doubt. Snowflake growled, rubbing at her back with a talon. Sunlight filled the room, and it was at this time that all of the Icewings were expected to be up, and every morning, that was what Snowflake had done every single day just like every other dragon.

But then why did she suddenly feel like not doing that today? Why did she feel like staying in bed for the rest of the day?

She heard rustling on her left, and she felt someone brush their wings against hers, and she tensed, her blood running cold… Only for that beautiful night to come back to her.

“Good morning my Snowflake~” Her voice ignited a fire in Snowflake’s heart, her heart skipped a few beats and she felt lightheaded. This was the dragon that made her the way she felt right now. The one who made her think things - Horrible things an Icewing should never think, like running away with a female to have a beautiful, wonderful, gloriously happy life with. A female Icewing, of all dragons! She was royalty meant to marry an Icewing prince and have heirs to one day fight for the throne and continue the royal bloodline. But when she was with her, all of that didn’t seem to matter. Nothing did.

But now that the magic of last night was gone, the realization set in like a bolt of lightning when looked and saw that yes, there was a female Icewing in her bedroom. “What have we done?” Snowflake murmured, horrified, yet also sort of thrilled to be breaking the rules.

“Shh.” Snowfox said, holding a claw in front of her muzzle before brushing it across her face with a slight rumble, “You know you had a good time.” She smiled, her diamond-studded teeth glittering in the light of the nearby moon globes which they meant to discard.

Their muzzles found each other, now it was Snowflake’s turn for to rumble pleasurably as they kissed, tongues slightly grazing one another. If Mother saw what I was doing right now… I would be flayed in front of the entire Ice Kingdom, or worse… Her eyes flew open and she pushed Snowfox away. “Snowfox…”

The ice dragon wiped saliva from their muzzle with a giggle, “What? Something wrong, my princess?” Snowflake swallowed a huge lump in her throat. On one talon, she loved this dragon, loved her from her tail spikes to her deadly serrated claws, and would even be willing to go as far as attempting to elope with her, which they had indeed discussed numerous times… But on the other, what on the three moons was she thinking?! She knew what she was doing was horrible and wrong, and if they ever got caught, the consequences would be dire, not to mention all the other rules they’d broken. Snowflake might as well plunge an icicle down her throat right that very second. Three moons, make a decision, brain! “Snowflake?”

“S-Sorry, I’m a little lost in thought.” She reached for her partner’s talons, squeezing them.

“It’s okay, Snowflake.” Snowfox chirped softly, their bodies touching as she pulled her closer. Her scales felt amazing against Snowflake’s belly. She shivered, “I know you’re worried. I understand.”

“I’m not sure you do.” Snowflake said, “Can’t you see? We can’t be together.” It hurt Snowflake to her very core to say that, but sadly it was true.

“I know we can’t.” Snowfox sighed wistfully.

“But I love you too much to let you go…” Snowflake suddenly giggled, “Remember when we first met? All those years ago? When Arctic was still here?”

Snowfox snorted at his memory, “Oh, don’t remind me. What a seal-brained fool.” Her wings wrapped around hers, like she was protecting her from the bad memories of her former fiance. “Then again… The one you have to marry now isn’t much better. What’s his name?”

“Walrus,” Snowflake said, sticking her tongue out in disgust. “He’s a quiet one. Good with scrolls, not much else.”

“Tsk tsk tsk…” Snowfox murmured, “You deserve so much better… You deserve an Icewing who has a voice of their own, who isn’t afraid to break the rules to get what they want, someone who will actually love you for the rest of their life.” She grinned.

“By all the moons, where would I find a dragon like that?”

The pair laughed, their paws still interlinked. They could laugh, they could hold paws, and most importantly, they could be together. All things that they could never do in the Ice Kingdom. It felt like Snowflake’s bedroom was her sanctuary where nothing could ever go wrong and things would go exactly as she wanted. If only things could stay that way. “You know…” Snowfox murmured as their laughter subsided, “Elopement is always an option. We could run away at night and find somewhere nice to live. We could settle down, explore the kingdoms…” She pressed her head against Snowflake’s, her gaze hypnotic.

Snowflake thought about it again. It was always an option, they had talked about it planning it to the very last detail. They would sneak out at night, sneaking out one at a time and traveling on foot to avoid attracting the attention of the guards. They planned out where they would go, Jade Mountain, where they agreed to build a nice little hut where they could live peacefully. They even planned all of the little things they wanted to do. Go to restaurants and taverns in different kingdoms, (Except the night kingdom!) and learn how to swim so they could go to the beach… All of that and so much more, and it all would be perfect because they would have each other.

It was so funny how it was so close within their grasp and yet there was so much that was stopping them. If they went through with this, they would both be leaving behind their family, their futures that they were expected to commit to, and most importantly, their lives. Snowflake could be putting the both of them in danger if they eloped, which is already terrible in the Ice Kingdom already, but a couple consisting of two females was seen by the queen as disgusting and backward. The queen would gladly have them executed if they were caught, and Snowflake couldn’t stand the thought of her beloved partner getting executed.

Then again, staying here, marrying a boring Icewing, raising dragonets that will challenge the queen and continue the royal bloodline or die trying, and ultimately living a soulless, monotonous life… Snowflake had a pretty easy decision to make. Have a wonderful life with the greatest dragon in the Ice Kingdom, or stay here with Walrus and have children that’ll die by their adulthood.

“I know that look.” Snowfox said, interrupting her deep train of thought, “You’re about to make a horribly wonderful decision, aren’t you?”

“I certainly am,” Snowflake whispered, feeling just as she felt when she teamed up with her to sabotage Arctic’s secret love with Foeslayer. “I think we’re going to be very happy with each other.”

They inched ever closer, Snowfox’s breath tickling her ear as she tipped her head to whisper, “I think you’re right.”

And in one swift motion, Snowfox rolled onto her now-wife’s body, and with a motion they were all too familiar with, they kissed, heads tilting and tongues twisting. Snowflake’s heart seemed to beat faster and stronger than before, beating just for her beloved Snowfox and no one else. From that moment on, their lives would be much, much different.

Snowfox exhaled softly as they broke off the kiss, a smile creeping across her muzzle, “Come on, let’s get going. The sooner we get through today, the sooner we can leave this kingdom behind.” She held out a talon. Snowflake took it with a gentle squeeze.

“I’m a little nervous, Snowfox.” She said as her partner pulled her up out of bed.

“Shh. Don’t be.” Snowfox hissed, nuzzling her neck, “We’re going to be fine, mi amor. Just think. Come tomorrow, we’ll be flying towards Jade Mountain.”

She was right. They were going to be fine. Snowfox knew what she was doing, and so did Snowflake. They had been planning this for as long as they had feelings for each other, there was no way their plan would backfire! Everything was going to be just fine, their new life, one that they were both waiting for for so long, was just within their reach.

One more day…
