Summary
It’s only years later that Kaz receives a message written in a childish hand he does not know. It is unsigned and no postal marks are on the envelope, only his name.
He prises open the seal, puzzled by the contents before he remembers the itch he never could completely scratch.
"I’m coming."
The events of the SoC duology are well behind them when Kaz receives a letter and remembers the Terrible, Horrible, Very Bad, No Good Month a few years prior.
A reasonable man would take measures to ensure that none of this ever comes to haunt him again.
But Inej has gone to sea, Wylan is cheerfully waging war against the Merchers from within, Jesper is… doing whatever Jesper does when he’s not doting on Wylan.
And Kaz’s sense of curiosity, the need to know how the trick is done, has always been his besetting sin.
