Work Text:

The sun used to always be up by the time Suzu awoke. That was before she met Tsubasa. Suzu from a year ago is shouting at her current self for walking to the park in the near dark on a weekend.

They were here together a couple of days ago, Suzu mainly doing some sketches. At the end of the day, they'd made plans to come here early this morning. She hopes she didn't overestimate how early Tsubasa meant. She also wonders what birds they'll spot. Spring's beginning, will there be new arrivals?

She spots a couple of birds on her way to and around the park, but more importantly she spots Tsubasa sitting on one of the park's benches.

“Hi!” She yells over, waving her hands wildly above her head.

Tsubasa's head jerks, surprised by Suzu's shout. She reminds Suzu of a bird herself. “Hey!” She smiles and waves one hand, more composed than Suzu was.

She doesn't quite run, but Suzu picks up the pace significantly to arrive by Tsubasa's side sooner. Now on the bench, she finally looks properly up at the sky. “Oh, good timing.”

“Yeah. The sun's rising.”

Tsubasa doesn't take her eyes off of the orange, pink, and purple clouds floating through the sea blue sky. She's seen it so many times getting up early to birdwatch, and yet it never gets old.

Suzu has watched the sunrise less than she has, no question, but she's more focused on Tsubasa. The sky is pretty, of course, but nothing compares to the blue of Tsubasa's hair. The places the sun's light hits it are the same orange as the underside of the clouds, and probably even more soft. Suzu gets the urge to reach out and card her fingers through it.

She watches her eyes – a darker blue than her hair. They sparkle like the water in the pond the ducks swam through when they first met.

Tsubasa is the one to break the silence. “It's beautiful.”

“Yeah…” It takes another minute or so, but Suzu manages to take her eyes away, and actually admire the sunrise. “Do you think the birds find it beautiful too?”

“I never thought about it. If they do, they're lucky. Imagine being able to fly through a sunrise.” Tsubasa finally turns to look at Suzu.

Suzu reaches out her hand at the sun. “It'd be like touching it…”

She turns back. “If a bird touched the sun, it would burn.”

Her hand falls. “Nevermind,” she laughs awkwardly.

The wood of the bench is cold under her palm, it hasn't been in the sun long enough. It's hard not to notice when something warmer brushes against the side of her hand.

Suzu looks down beside her and sees Tsubasa's hand next to hers. She's still looking at the sunrise.

Is she sat too close? For whatever reason. Suzu inches her own hand closer, fingers gently grazing Tsubasa's hand as she holds hers above it.

She does it so slowly, and then Tsubasa turns her hand over to hold Suzu's in less than a second. “Do you want to search for some birds now?”

Suzu tries to speak as she nods, unsuccessfully and unnecessarily – her head barely moves before Tsubasa is shooting up from the bench, words pouring out of her mouth. Suzu just about manages to stand up before Tsubasa begins trailing off physically as well as verbally.

And since they're holding hands, Suzu gets pulled along with her, laughing.
