Work Text:
Abi sat near Emma silently in the storm shelter. It was a comfortable silence, one following lighthearted talk that helped to get their minds off of their current circumstances. They discussed inconsequential things like funny conversations with campers and that time Nick got sprayed by a skunk. Afterward, Abi began to get lost in thought.
Her first thought was how much she enjoyed Emma's presence. In simply being by her side, Abi felt she could breathe easier. She thought about how that wouldn't last much longer, how they were still to be separated after all this was over. She then started reflecting on their relationship.
Feeling so close to someone after only two months together was unusual for Abi. She'd never been the type to get so attached so soon, but Emma was different. In a way that was confusing and somewhat frustrating, almost scary at times. Abi found it hard to understand why she felt that way, the effect Emma had on her. Emma was unlike anyone Abi would usually befriend. She was impulsive, reckless, she did what she wanted with little consideration of how others would respond. She often came across as harsh and dismissive of others' emotions. The two had their fair share of arguments. Abi's anger toward Emma could grow so strong she'd feel like she might explode, but it would always fizzle out. She could never stay mad for long. Emma was like a brilliantly shining light that Abi just couldn't look away from, no matter how much it might hurt to stare. She'd miss her like hell, but for now they were together.
Abi moved closer to Emma, took her hand and rested her head on her shoulder. After getting past her initial surprise, Emma squeezed Abi's hand with a contented smile. They would both savor this while it lasted.
