Field of Feelings

Summary:

Piggy wants to do everything she can for her fans, even if it means stressing herself out. Denise decides to come to her rescue.

Notes:

Day 4 of Femslash February! The prompt was field. This is not connected to any of my other Denise/Piggy fics, this is a one-shot!

Work Text:

Huffing, Piggy sat down at her desk, flipping through her fan-mail for the fifth time that day. Sometimes she wished more fans would just Tweet at her on Twitter or leave her a comment online, but then they wouldn't have the chance to have her curly-cutesy signature on a piece of paper that most would probably lose anyways. She massaged at her wrist before starting to write out replies, which all were short and sweet and to the point, before signing her signature a several dozen times as if she were stamping them. She shuffled through them like a stack of cards, her eyes growing heavy.

She adored her fans, but sometimes she missed when she was just an up and coming star. It wasn't so stressful then, and she still could see fans who loved her that weren't willing to trample each other to death to meet her. Nowadays, it felt as if she were drowning in the excited tears of her fans, and there was nobody willing to save her.

As her nail broke off, she set her glitter pen down with a huff and again massaged at her wrists. What she would give to be more like Kermit; he was just as famous as her if not more famous (though she would never let him know that), and yet when he was stressed it was always because of something other Muppets did, instead of his fans. He got just enough fan-mail as she did, and yet he didn't usually take the time to sort through it, or at least, she had never seen him do it. Maybe Scooter was in charge of his fan-mail? Maybe Walter was throwing it all away again, so he could be the ultimate Muppet fan? She wasn't entirely certain, but it frustrated her.

Maybe if she didn't care so much about how those fans stared up at her she would be alright. But she just wasn't like the frog; she loved and adored her fans, and she needed to show them that. She sighed as she picked up her next stack of letters, setting them down when her office door was knocked on.

"Oh, good, Yolanda, you finally got my StarBucks?" She asked aloud, but when she didn't receive a reply from the rat, she huffed and stood. "Wait, is that Fozzie again? I already told you, don't come knocking on my door to tell your corny knock-knock jokes, bother literally anyone else with them!" Just then, the door swung open, and Denise smiled at her from the doorway.

Piggy's eyes widened in acknowledgment before softening again. "Oh... sorry, Denise. I thought you were the bear."

"Don't worry about it none, Sugarplum. I did pick up your drink from Yolanda's desk, though." She announced, carrying over the caramel latte with double caramel and setting it on Piggy's desk. She glanced over the stacks upon stacks of fan-mail and pouted. "Have you been stressin' yourself over these all day?"

Sighing, Miss Piggy nodded to her crush. "Yeah, well, I need to get them sent back. I'm almost caught up to last year."

Denise hummed in annoyance, leaning down and hovering over Piggy's shoulders. "You broke one of your nails off?"

Groaning, Piggy held up her hand that was lacking one sparkly black acrylic nail. "I did. Was gripping my pen too hard."

"Mmm, and it looks like you're forming a blister between your fingers too, Sugar." She lifted Piggy's hand up, running her own hand over the bubble that was threatening to grow between the other pig's fingers. "Yanno what? You've earned yourself a vacation. I know you love your fans, but we'll get someone else to finish these up, alright?" She stated, pulling Piggy to her feet. Reluctantly, she let herself be led out of her office.

"What about the show tonight? I can't just leave that unattended." Piggy contested, and Denise shook her head.

"Don't you worry 'bout a thing. Walter was begging to read his Muppets Fanfiction today on the show anyways, and I got your friend Annie-Sue to host. But today, you need to rest your hooves." She explained as they climbed into the elevator. Gradually, Piggy accepted her fate. While the idea of relaxing was nice, it was hard for her to actually commit to it. That was, unless, she had someone by her side insisting on it.

"Who do you think will sign all my letters?"

Denise cracked a smile. "I learned how to forge signatures from my Uncle, and Rizzo learned from me."

"How are you gonna convince the pipsqueak to do that?"

Laughing, Denise leaned back against the wall. "I'll promise to buy him an extra lunch for a week. That's all it'll take with him."

As the elevator stopped, Piggy scrunched her face. "I don't know, Denise. I really should be the one to write those replies to my fans. They're counting on me."

"They're countin' on a reply, and you need to be countin' sheep, so let's get going. I'll buy you lunch and then we can go and relax somewhere nice." The two climbed up into Denise's pickup truck, settling in quickly. Even the truck felt incredibly cozy and comfortable to Piggy compared to her stuffy office, and she let out a small breath.

"Alright, alright. You dragged me out here already, so let's get going." She complained, as the truck started up down the road. She rolled the window down, closing her eyes and breathing in the fumes from the other cars, the scent soon shifting to a warmer, sweeter smell. She opened her eyes again and found herself in front of a small cafe.

"Oh? The Sugar and Spice Cafe? Are you sure you want to eat here? This place is kinda expensive." She muttered, already reaching for her purse.

"Of course! And put your purse down, Piggy. It's on me." She insisted, and Piggy felt her shoulders relax.

"If you say so. It smells amazing honestly." She breathed in the scent of warm broccoli and cheese soup and raspberry-filled donuts, her mouth watering as she made her way into the building. Soon, the two sat down to their warm meals and sipped at their sodas, and Piggy relaxed back against the booth as she finished her doughnut, closing her eyes and savoring the sweet, fruity cream.

"Now, where were you wanting to go and relax?" Piggy questioned, as the two finished their meals and left the building, trotting back to the truck.

"You'll see! I think you'll like it." Denise replied, hopping into the driver's seat and starting the truck up again. Within a few moments, the duo found themselves in an open field. Denise bounced out of the truck and into the warm grass, grabbing a blanket from the back of the truck. She made her way to the passenger side and before Piggy could do it herself, Denise opened the door.

"Well, come on. I'll set us a place up around here, and I brought a little speaker if you want some music."

With the grace of a newborn deer, Piggy grabbed Denise's hand and stumbled out of the truck and trudged through the weeds, following closely behind the brunette. Finally, they stopped and Denise unbundled the fabric and laid it on the grass, sitting down on the brightly-colored cotton-cover.

Piggy joined her side and stared around the field, admiring the butterflies and bright yellow and white wildflowers that grew around them. A few bright pink flowers at the edge of the clearing bloomed and danced in the light breeze, and Piggy inhaled deeply, closing her eyes. Before she opened them, Denise slid her hooves over Piggy's shoulders, lightly squeezing and rocking her palms against the other's felt skin.

Sighing, Piggy leaned into the touch and slowly laid her head down, resting it in Denise's lap. Denise moved her hands and started to run them through and over Piggy's hair and ears, making the other sigh again in bliss.

"You know, you've been working too hard, Sugar. You need to relax more." Denise whispered, and Piggy kept her eyes closed, smiling.

"I know, I know. But I hate relaxing. It's so hard to relax when I have so many responsibilities."

"Mm, but you need to make yourself a responsibility, too, alright? Or better yet, I'll make helping you relax a responsibility of mine. How's that sound?" She hummed, scratching gently at Piggy's scalp.

Humming, Piggy sighed deeply, feeling her chest rise and fall to the same rhythm that the flowers danced to. "I can make that work."

And within minutes, Piggy found herself dozing off, her large snout causing her to snore. Tenderly, Denise moved the other's head off her lap and to the blanket beneath them, sliding down so she was laying down beside her. She turned on her side, preferring to stare at the blonde over the blue sky, before closing her own eyes.
