Chapter 1: Arrival
Chapter Text
“Malon, we’re back! We’re back!” Wind called as he ran towards her waving his arm enthusiastically.
Malon returned his wave. “My young sailor, welcome back!” she called with a smile. “It’s so good to see you, all of you,” she added, moving her gaze over the others who were a bit further behind.
“It’s good to be back,” Wind replied with a broad grin, skidding to a halt in front of her.
“So young man, are you ready to help me out again around the ranch?” she asked with a playfully serious expression, resting her fists on her hips.
“Yes, ma’am!” Wind immediately replied with a salute.
Malon laughed at his antics and response. “Good because I’ve got a lot of things around here that you could help me out with.”
“A little rest first might be nice too,” Twilight chimed in, coming up behind Wind.
Malon smiled softly at Twilight. “Of course. I’m sure you all could. You can start helping tomorrow. Tonight let’s get you all settled in and you can tell me how your journey’s been going.”
Twilight nodded and gave her a grateful smile before continuing on to the house. Wind gave Malon one more wave then followed behind Twilight.
Time came up beside Malon then and slipped his arm around her waist. She immediately rested her head against his shoulder.
“He seems a bit tired,” she murmured softly, a worried note in her voice.
“We all are,” Time said with a soft chuckle.
“No, it seems more so for him,” she replied with a thoughtful tilt to her head.
“Well we’ve all been through a lot, him perhaps a bit more than the rest,” Time admitted softly as the others passed with greetings, smiles, and waves for Malon.
Malon returned each smile and wave with one of her own.
She stepped away from Time and smoothed her apron. “Well I better go in and start acting like a good hostess. If you all are as road weary as you look, I’ve got my work cut out for me,” she giggled softly and hurried to the house.
Time smiled and followed slowly after her, taking in his surroundings. “It’s good to be home,” he murmured to himself, his smile softening.
When Malon entered, most of the boys were seated or sprawled tiredly about the house. It was quieter than she had expected. Nodding determinedly to herself, she clapped her hands decisively. “Alright, all of you go put away your things and wash up. The rooms you used before are still ready for you. I’ll have a nice supper on the table by the time you return. Now scoot.” She made a shooing motion with her hands but the boys needed little urging.
Time paused a moment before following the others. “You are truly wonderful. Only you could be so welcoming and ready to take on so many.”
“You know I’m a farm girl, I’m used to hard work,” she said, pushing up a sleeve for emphasis.
Time chuckled and gave her a soft kiss on the cheek. “That’s my girl.”
She swatted his shoulder playfully. “Oh you, go wash up with the others and let me get to work on the food.”
Time’s eyes were twinkling as he smiled at her and then headed up to wash.
The boys had divided themselves between the two guest bedrooms and were taking off their gear.
“It’s really nice to be back,” Sky said with a serene smile as he folded his cloak and laid it on the bed.
“Agreed,” added Hyrule, laying down some of his equipment, “It’ll be nice to enjoy the simple hospitalities of Time’s home for awhile.”
“It’s your home too for as long as you’re here,” Time commented with a smile, peeking his head in the door upon hearing the comment.
Hyrule smiled. “That’s really wonderful of you and Malon. I can’t express how much that means.”
“To all of us,” Twilight chimed in.
Time nodded and smiled then continued on to the next room. He almost collided with Wind who was racing out.
“Sorry!” Wind called with an apologetic wave as he continued on his way to the bathroom.
Time leaned into the room. “How are things going in here?” He noted Wind’s things tossed haphazardly on the bed.
“Fine,” Wild replied, as he leaned his quiver against the wall and hung his pouch on a bedpost.
“We’re settling in nicely, some of us a little faster than others,” Warriors commented, indicating Wind’s things with a tilt of his head.
Time chuckled softly. “Good to hear. I’m going to go settle in myself. See you downstairs at supper.”
The others nodded as Time left the room.
Time walked down the hall to the bedroom he shared with Malon when he was home. He ran his hand over the doorframe and brushed his fingers along the dresser, letting out a contented sigh. After gazing about for a moment, he began to remove his armor. He could hear the clamor of the others as they began taking their turns at washing, as well as a bit of arguing over who was next or taking too long. He chuckled at the comfortable homeyness of it all.
Once he’d removed all his armor and set aside the rest of his equipment, Time went into their small bathroom to splash some water on his face and wash his hands. The water was refreshing. He let out another sigh as he began to relax, some of his burdens laid aside for the moment while he was home. One last look about the bedroom, then he headed back downstairs to join the others for the meal.
Malon was finishing up the meal in the kitchen when the boys began to trickle back downstairs. She’d already placed many of the dishes on the table and only a few things needed a little more time before they’d be finished and ready to plate as well.
“Wow, that smells good,” Sky commented as he walked into the dining area.
“Thank you,” Malon replied, a slight blush tinging her cheeks.
“Something smells amazing!” Wind chimed in, bouncing into a seat at the table.
“You can say that again,” agreed Hyrule as he too arrived downstairs.
One by one the rest appeared with their own comments of how good everything smelled and looked.
“Just take your seats and I’ll bring the rest in in just a moment,” she called from the kitchen as she drained the last pot, putting the food in a bowl.
When she carried it in, they were all seated, eager to eat but still polite enough to wait before touching anything. They had also learned on their last visit not to mess with anything before Malon gave them permission. She could be quite strict.
After bringing in the last of the food for the meal, Malon took her place at the table. “Eat up, everyone. I hope you all enjoy,” she said with a smile.
“Oh, we will,” Time confirmed with a grin.
The others were already filling their plates and some, such as Wind and Wild, already had their mouths full. Malon giggled softly to herself. She enjoyed the sight of so many at the table and it pleased her greatly to see them enjoying the food she had prepared.
After giving them a few minutes to take the edge off their hunger, Malon prompted, “So tell me what you’ve been up to since your last visit.”
“We’ve seen so much! And the battles we’ve fought!” Wind exclaimed enthusiastically, half standing from his chair and waving a breadstick like a sword.
Warriors placed a gentle hand on Wind’s shoulder, returning him to his seat. “Yes yes, and you’ve done your share of the fighting in those battles,” he said with a smile and light chuckle.
“We all have,” Four said before taking another bite.
“Sounds like there’s a lot to tell,” Malon encouraged with a gentle smile.
“More than we’ll be able to tell you tonight. But we should be here for a few days at least,” Time stated.
Malon nodded. “Then start from when you left and we’ll see how far we get before the end of the meal.”
Time nodded and began the tale. The others chimed in as they went along, each sharing their part of the story. Sometimes Malon laughed at the antics they got up to together and others she tried her best to hide all the concern she felt hearing about the dangerous things they’d faced. There was only one point where they each seemed to be reluctant to talk about their journey. She noticed many glances directed towards Twilight from the others. She cast a questioning look at Time. He gave a subtle shake of his head then inclined it slightly toward Twilight. Malon nodded in understanding. This part of the tale would have to come from him and she could wait ‘til he was ready.
When everyone had stuffed themselves, the boys insisted on clearing the table while Malon relaxed.
“At least let me brew some tea,” she offered, starting to stand.
“No need, we can handle that too,” Wild insisted, before disappearing into the kitchen with a pile of plates.
“Alright, you boys win. And thank you,” she acquiesced, smilingly affectionately at them all as she resettled in her chair.
Four soon came back with a tea tray and set it in front of Malon before returning to the kitchen with the others. Malon poured herself a cup and sat contentedly sipping it as she listened to the bustle from the other room. She chuckled to herself at the murmur of chatter from them.
When things quieted down in the kitchen, the boys wandered back to the table. Malon took that as her cue and picked up the tea tray. “Let’s move into the living room where it’s more comfortable and you can all relax while we chat some more.” She didn’t wait for any replies before carrying the tea tray into the living room and setting it on the coffee table.
The boys arrayed themselves about the room in varied positions on the various pieces of furniture. Some curled themselves in chairs or on the couch while a couple sprawled on the floor. Time perched on the arm of the chair that Malon had chosen and rested his arm about her shoulders.
The talk changed from their journey and turned to what they would be doing while they were visiting. Malon purposefully steered the conversations towards lighter topics that would be good before bedtime, such as telling them of things that had been going on on the ranch and some of the news her father brought back from his deliveries in the towns.
When everyone started yawning, Malon decided it was time to send them up to bed. “Alright everyone, I’ve had a long day as I’m sure you all have as well. Let’s get ourselves ready for bed.”
“Will you still come up and read us stories like last time?” Hyrule asked, an eager note in his voice.
She smiled lovelingly at the boys. “Of course. Now scoot along while I finish tidying up down here.”
There were smiles and nods as the boys left the living room and headed up to get ready for bed.
When Malon came upstairs, the boys were all camped in one room awaiting stories. Even Legend, who could be a grump and might try to argue that he didn’t need, like, or want any bedtime stories, was relaxed and waiting for Malon to start reading. She had brought a new book that her father had recently picked up for her in town. She settled herself in a comfortable chair and began reading. They were all enthralled until they began to one by one drift off to sleep.
Malon stopped reading after a few chapters. She got up and tucked in the ones already in their beds as the others sleepily shuffled to their own room and beds, Warriors carrying a fast asleep Wind slung over his shoulder. Then she went and made sure each of them was settled and tucked in as well. They each murmured their thanks and good nights.
Malon then made her way down to her bedroom where Time was waiting.
“They seemed to have enjoyed the story,” he commented with a wry smile.
“Yes, and I’m glad. It’s a new book and I wasn’t sure how they’d like it. I’ve only had time to read a little of it myself. I figured this way I could read more of it,” she replied with a slightly mischievous smile.
Time chuckled. “That seems a good use of storytime.”
Malon finished readying herself for bed, brushing her hair out before climbing into bed beside her husband. Time turned off the bedside lamp then turned to his wife. She nestled herself into his arms.
“Malon…” Time whispered tentatively.
“Yes, dear?” she murmured.
“I… I just wanted to apologize for being gone so much and so long. You know I…” Time stammered to say before Malon placed a finger to his lips.
“Shhh, you know that I understand. This is an important mission you’re on, for all of us. And you’ve always been honest with me about these things. I’ll still be here when you return from this journey, just like the others,” she smiled lovingly at him.
Time’s gaze was full of his love for her. “What did I ever do to deserve you?” he asked softly before placing a gentle kiss on the top of her head.
“Oh I wouldn’t go so far as ‘deserve’. You know it was my idea anyway,” she teased.
He chuckled. “Perhaps your right. But there is one other thing that I’m still sorry about,” he said, looking at her seriously.
“And what’s that?” she asked with a little more concern.
“I’m sorry that I haven’t give you a family yet,” Time said softly, laying his hand gently over Malon’s stomach.
She giggled with relief and love. “But you have.”
Time’s eyes widened in surprise. “Do you mean to say…?” But he couldn’t finish his question.
“Oh no, not that, not yet. I meant all the boys. Those young men are our family just as much as Dad is, and you brought them into our lives,” she explained with a smile, placing a gentle hand on his cheek.
Time smiled warmly at her. “I love you.”
“I love you too.” she replied softly.
“Speaking of your father, will we see him on this visit?” Time inquired as they shifted more comfortably for sleeping.
Malon yawned. “Dad should probably be back tomorrow evening sometime. Probably just in time for dinner and bed, if I know him,” she giggled sleepily.
Time let out a soft chuckle. “Sounds just like him.”
Malon gave a slight nod and another yawn. “Good night, dear,” she murmured softly.
“Good night,” Time replied softly, tipping her chin up for a good night kiss before they finally settled down to sleep.
Chapter 2: Chores
Summary:
The chain gets back into the swing of helping out around the farm.
Chapter Text
Everyone woke feeling refreshed in the morning. It was nice to wake up in a bed instead of camped out in a forest or field. It was also nice for those beds to be familiar and, in some ways, their own. Malon did her best to make them feel like this was their home, too. From her perspective, it was, not just for Time and Twilight, her husband and descendant, but for each of the other heroes who shared that spirit of courage.
Malon had woken earlier than the boys. With a soft kiss to Time’s forehead, she had slipped quietly out of bed so as not to wake him. She knew that their travels weren’t easy and that the strain of all the dangers they faced would have made them weary. So she moved about quietly, doing her morning chores, but also making sure that there would be a hearty breakfast waiting for them when they woke up.
It was hard work on the farm, especially when her father Talon was away on deliveries, but she enjoyed it. This was her life and home, and she was happy. She smiled to herself as she softly hummed while whipping up a giant batch of pancakes. Remembering how much the boys had eaten the last time they were here, she had quadrupled her recipe. She chuckled to herself at the memories and sighed happily to be able to have them all here again.
The first Link wandered down following his nose. “Mmmm… something smells good,” Hyrule murmured. “What’s for breakfast?”
“Oh, just the usual things,” Malon replied with a smile. “Go ahead and take a seat and dig in,” she said, gesturing with her spoon.
Hyrule didn’t have to be told twice.
Shortly after he had begun to dig in, the others began showing up, some still rubbing the sleep from their eyes.
Each commented appreciatively about the smells and spread before sitting down and digging in.
“It’s been too long since we were able to sit down to a fine meal like this,” Warriors complimented, filling his plate with sausage, eggs, and pancakes soon to be covered in syrup.
“I’ve missed maple syrup,” Wind added, stuffing a whole, maple syrup slathered pancake in his mouth.
“I’ve missed sitting at a table,” Sky joked with a chuckle.
The others laughed at this, heartily agreeing.
Time was the last to arrive. With a yawn and stretch, he entered the dining room. “Good morning, everyone. Is there any chance there’s any left for me?” he inquired good-naturedly.
“Of course there is,” Malon giggled.
“But not for long,” Four teased.
Malon shook her head, a half smile on her face. “I set some aside just in case the boys got a little overzealous,” she told Time, reaching for a full plate of pancakes.
Time kissed Malon on the cheek. “And that’s just one of the many reasons I love you,” he chuckled, taking the offered plate from Malon’s hand.
Time joined the others at the table and dug in. The conversation was light. After a good night’s sleep and with so much food before them, their moods were buoyant. Malon joined them after finishing one last batch of pancakes to bring with her to the table.
She let out another happy sigh.
“What’s the sigh for?” Time asked softly, leaning towards her.
“Just enjoying having my whole family here again… well except for Dad, but, as I said, he should be back tonight,” Malon replied with a smile.
Several of the others blushed a little. It had been a long time since they’d been part of a family, even the family they’d found with each other was still a brief time measured against all their adventures. The younger ones looked at Malon like a mom, a couple of the older ones did too. The oldest of them, such as Warriors, had begun to view her like a sister. Familial ties were nice. They hadn’t realized how much they’d missed that until their journey began and the feeling had become more poignant after their first visit to Lon Lon Ranch. Malon had done her utmost to make them welcome and at home. And whether it had been her intention or not, she had also made them feel loved. It was that comfortable love of family that many of them had never had or lost far too early. They treasured these moments. It also strengthened their resolve to see their quest through and make sure all of Hyrule, whatever era, was safe from this skulking threat they now faced.
When they finished eating, they were eager to get to work. Malon assigned them their chores and they filed outdoors. Then she cleaned up the dishes and finished her other household chores before, also, heading outdoors.
A quick survey of the ranch informed her that the boys were indeed hard at work. With a satisfied nod, she began her rounds of the fairy stations. She found Hyrule at the first one.
“There’s more than last time,” he commented as she crouched down beside him.
“Yes, I guess the word is getting around among the fairies about our quality sugar water,” she mused with light-hearted humor in her voice.
Hyrule laughed softly. “Well if it’s anything like the meals you cook us, I have no doubt it’s the finest around. Hopefully you won’t get overrun.”
Malon laughed at that. “Now that would be a sight, the ranch overrun by fairies. Cuccos I’ve seen, but fairies I can’t imagine.”
Hyrule gave her a quizzical look. “Your cuccos?”
She waved her hand. “You’ll have to ask my husband to tell you that story.” She covered her mouth, smothering some giggles.
“Oh well, then I’ll never hear the story,” he chuckled, a resigned note in his tone.
“He might surprise you,” she winked and then set about refreshing the dishes of sugar water.
Hyrule watched for a few more moments, then with a gentle good-bye to the fairies, he went back to the task he’d been working on.
Malon headed to the next fairy station. On her way she passed the cucco coop. Sky was there, apparently talking to the cuccos.
“I’m glad at least one of you gets along with my cuccos,” Malon commented with a smile.
“I love these little guys. I don’t understand why the others don’t seem to like them,” Sky replied.
Malon giggled knowingly. “Then I guess they haven’t shared any stories with you.”
“Stories?” Sky queried.
“Apparently they’ve had some run-ins with angry flocks. It seems quite humorous to me,” she explained, reaching out and giving the cucco in Sky’s arms a gentle caress.
Sky tilted his head thoughtfully then turned his gaze to the cucco in his arms. “I can’t imagine that of these little guys. Besides, what harm could they do?” He cooed at the bird affectionately and stroked its head.
“More than you’d expect, according to my husband,” Malon laughed. “So what’s your secret? How do you charm them into your arms like that?” she inquired in a playful tone.
Sky gave a soft laugh. “Well actually, they just remind me of the birds back home, only a bit smaller. I guess it’s the same no matter the size of the bird. You treat ‘em the right way and you’ll get along just fine.” He smiled brightly up at Malon.
She smiled back. “You’re quite right. Well, keep up the good work.” With a wave, she moved on.
Sky waved after her then returned his attention to the cuccos, the others of which were beginning to demand his attention.
Malon finished her rounds of the fairy stations, along her way having seen or heard the other boys hard at work about their chores. The day had flown by with only a brief pause in their work for a light midday meal.
Just as Malon was finishing up with the horses, she heard, “Ho, Malon my dear! I see you’re hard at work as usual. Too bad it’s not at supper yet.”
Malon turned with a happy exclamation, “Dad, you’re home early!” Then she put her fists to her hips in a mock-severe pose. “You didn’t shirk on your deliveries and bribe some of the local kids to do them for you, did you?”
Talon laughed. “Now would I do such a thing?” he asked, a mischievous twinkle in his eyes.
“You certainly would and have,” she laughed as she embraced her father.
“Ah, it’s good to be home. Now I can finally get some decent sleep,” Talon chuckled, hugging his daughter back.
“Oh, Dad,” Malon said, stepping back and holding him at arm’s length, “Link’s back.”
“That adventuresome son-in-law of mine is finally home for a bit? Good, been too long,” he grumbled amicably, a smile in his eyes.
“There are a few others here as well that I’d like you to meet,” Malon added.
“Others? Oh, fine, fine. You always were good at handling company,” Talon yawned, quickly losing interest in conversation. “When’s supper gonna be ready?” he asked mildly.
Malon shook her head affectionately. “I was just about to get it started.”
“Good good. Maybe I’ll take a little nap ‘til it’s ready. You’ll call me when it’s ready, of course?” He began shuffling towards the house.
“Of course, Dad. And you can meet them all at supper!” Malon called after him.
Talon waved sleepily in acknowledgement before he went inside.
Malon gave each of the horses one last pat then went inside. She washed her hands in the kitchen then set about preparing the meal.
As she worked, the boys came in as they finished their chores. She could hear them washing up. Then they slowly began to appear in the kitchen. Several offered to help, so she assigned them tasks. Preparations sped along and soon the table was set, laden, and crowded with hungry boys.
“Dad, dinner time!” Malon called from the dining room doorway before taking her seat.
Talon entered shortly after with a yawn. “Something smells delicious. I believe you’ve outdone yourself once again,” he said as he took his place at the table.
“Good evening, Talon. Good to see you again. I was sorry to miss you last time,” Time greeted Talon.
“Hullo, my boy, glad to see you home. Hope you’ll be staying for awhile,” Talon replied as he heaped food on his plate.
“For a few days at least,” Time responded.
“Good, good…” Talon mumbled. After eating a few bites, he finally took note of the others around the table. “Oh my, there are quite a number of you.” He squinted. “Relations of yours, lad?”
Time chuckled, “You could say that.”
“Dad, these are…” and Malon spent the next fifteen minutes trying to explain to Talon who they were and why they all had the same name.
“I see, I see. Family name,” Talon mumbled agreeably, still not completely understanding but not concerned about it.
The rest of the meal was spent amicably eating and chatting. The boys shared some tales of their adventures with Talon who took it all in his usual sleepy way. Malon enjoyed having her whole family at the table with her, reveling in this peaceful time.
After dinner, everyone once again helped clean up, except Talon who retired to the living room and promptly fell asleep. Malon went in and tucked a blanket around him, smiling affectionately at him. The boys were tired from their busy day, so headed quietly up to bed after finishing up in the kitchen. Malon gave a slight wave to indicate she’d be up shortly. She tidied a few things and checked on Talon one more time before she also headed upstairs.
The boys had once more gathered in one room for story time.
“We don’t have to work this hard on the road,” Warriors complained, but it was only half-hearted.
“That’s because our work is usually compacted into battles with monsters,” Time chuckled.
“I’m enjoying the simplicity of farmwork once again,” Twilight sighed contentedly.
“It is a nice change,” Sky agreed.
“I’m grateful that I can use Malon’s forge, it’ll give me the chance to tend to some of our gear,” Four added.
“I like the beds!” Wind laughed, flopping back on one.
“Hey, off my bed if you’re gonna be bouncing,” Legend grumbled but didn’t move to shove Wind off.
Wind just stuck his tongue out at Legend and grabbed a pillow, settling himself in.
Malon arrived amid the quiet chatter. They all seemed more relaxed than when they had arrived and that pleased her. The boys quieted as she sat and began to read.
A few chapters later, she was tucking them all into bed. Then she and Time returned to their room together.
“Another good day on the ranch,” Time sighed contentedly, slipping an arm around Malon.
“I find they often are. But more so when I have you home,” Malon said affectionately as she rested her hands on his chest and leaned up to give him a kiss on the cheek.
Time smiled, wrapping her in an embrace and tucking her head under his chin. He completely agreed with her.
After a moment more, they separated and readied themselves for bed. Then they settled into bed to savor another peaceful night together.
Chapter 3: Visitor
Summary:
An unexpected, though not unwelcome, visitor stops by Lon Lon Ranch.
Chapter Text
The next day dawned bright and clear. Everyone rose early, except Talon who was still asleep right where they’d left him the night before. Malon didn’t even bother trying to wake him. After years of trying without success, she no longer bothered. At the moment, she didn’t need the extra help, she had plenty. The boys helped with the morning outdoor chores, then helped with breakfast. Talon stumbled into the dining room when everything was ready and sat down to enjoy the meal with the others. Even after all these years, Malon was still impressed by how he never failed to appear for meals.
After having shared another excellent meal together, they cleaned up, then set about another day’s worth of chores.
As Malon was sweeping away some stray leaves and bits of hay near the entrance to the ranch, she caught sight of a rider approaching. She knew instantly who it was based on the horse. She raised her hand in greeting.
“Hello, Zelda,” she called with a wave.
Lullaby raised a hand in return greeting. “Greetings, Malon.”
“What brings you here today?” Malon inquired, pleased to see her.
“I had a little free time and decided I would use it to catch up with you,” Lullaby replied with a smile. “Oh, I didn’t realize you had company, Malon,” she said, noting the young men bustling around the ranch as she reined her royal horse to a stop in front of Malon.
Malon laughed. “Company or not, you’re always welcome, Zelda. And I’m surprised you don’t recognize any of them,” she commented with a mischievous twinkle in her eyes.
Lullaby was briefly puzzled, but Time walked up at just that moment.
“Hello, Zelda. Been awhile,” Time said with a soft smile as he slipped his arm around Malon’s waist.
Lullaby immediately dismounted her horse. “Link!? Oh my goodness! It’s been ages. I didn’t realize you were back. How have your journeys been going?” she blurted in a rush.
Malon chuckled softly. “I hope you don’t mind my sharing a bit with Zelda. It’s nice to have someone to talk to about it all from time to time,” she explained softly to Time.
He gave her a squeeze. “Of course I don’t mind. You taught me how important it is to have someone to share things with.” He smiled down at her before returning his attention to Lullaby. “Why don’t you come with us while we round up the others and then we can all talk inside. It’s about time for a break anyway,” Time said with a smile.
The three proceeded towards the house. Time gave a shout and wave of his arm, calling all the boys to attention. He indicated with a hand gesture that they were going inside. Faint nods of understanding could be seen.
Malon immediately bustled into the kitchen to prepare tea and a mid-morning snack. Lullaby and Time sat at the table catching up.
“It’s good to see you again, Zelda. How is running the kingdom going?” Time asked mildly, stretching out his legs as he relaxed in his chair.
“About as good as can be expected. At least we have peace, thanks to you. But someone always has a complaint. ‘He stole my cow.’ ‘She owes me a hundred rupees.’ ‘We need more guards.’ It never ends,” Lullaby gave a dramatic sigh, but she was smiling too.
Time chuckled. “Same old, same old then? Well at least it’s only that and not Ganondorf again. Or some other monster wanting to take over.”
Lullaby gave an exaggerated shudder. “Don’t even mention the name.” Then she giggled. “But, yes, the same old minutia of running a kingdom and caring for its citizenry.”
“So you’re saying there haven’t been any strange monster sightings?” Time asked, eyes narrowing.
Lullaby was puzzled. “No. Should there be? Is there something I should be keeping an eye out for?” slight alarm crept into her voice.
Just then the others began trickling into the house.
As some of them caught sight of Lullaby, they stopped in their tracks.
Legend, Wind, Twilight, and Four paused, recognizing the royal visage before them. Sky, Warriors, Wild, and Hyrule gave them puzzled looks as they sat down.
“Zelda?” “Tetra?” Four and Wind asked at the same time, then looked at one another.
“Sit down and I’ll explain,” Time said, waving his hand as if to draw them to the table.
They spent the next hour catching up, explaining things, and filling in the details Malon hadn’t heard yet.
Wind, Four, Legend, and Twilight got past their surprise at seeing someone almost exactly like the Zelda they knew.
“Probably an ancestor…” Wind mumbled.
“Strong resemblance in the royal lineage…” Twilight murmured.
Sky, Hyrule, and Wild now understood their reaction and could now note the similarities to their own Zeldas.
“I guess I can see it…” Sky muttered with a tilt of his head.
Warriors was accustomed to the oddities and likenesses found with reaching through time, so had not been at all shocked by Lullaby’s presence or appearance. He just nodded his understanding.
“So it would seem dark forces are at work again,” observed Lullaby thoughtfully. “There have been no strange happenings here yet, but I shall apprise my guards of the situation so that they can keep a watch out for such dangers.”
“It would seem the Postman is well traveled, so if you have need of us, send us a letter. We will do what we can to come if possible,” Time offered.
The others nodded their agreement.
“I hope it shall not come to that,” Lullaby declared.
“It would seem likely that it will not. So far we seem to arrive along with or ahead of the impending danger,” Warriors pointed out.
Lullaby gave a nod. “Should I then be concerned about your current presence here?”
“No, we chose to take a break. It would seem we’re allowed those occasionally,” Time chuckled and smiled.
Lullaby relaxed and returned his smile. “Then I hope your stay continues to be restful. It would seem you greatly need it. I am glad that I have had the chance to finally meet all of you. Malon often has good things to say.”
A few of the boys, Twilight especially, blushed lightly. Others, such as Wind, beamed with pride. It felt good to know that Malon spoke well of them. This was just the kind of morale boost they needed.
“We will do our best to live up to her high praise,” Wind declared emphatically.
Lullaby hid a soft giggle behind her hand. “I’m sure you will.” She smiled at Wind.
Wind grinned back at her.
“So, now that we’ve gotten all the seriousness out of the way, perhaps we can do something a little more relaxing,” Malon suggested.
“That would be wonderful. I didn’t expect to find more work when I came here but the information is good to have. Now let’s enjoy ourselves a bit,” Lullaby agreed.
The boys cheered heartily at the suggestion.
By now it was close to lunchtime, so Wild, Wind, and Four moved into the kitchen to prepare things. Warriors and Hyrule helped clean up the snack things so that the table would be clear. Sky, Twilight, and Legend set the table. Malon, Lullaby, and Time chatted a bit about old times.
Soon lunch was ready and everyone ate heartily. After clearing away the dishes and cleaning up once again, they went outside where they enjoyed a variety of things; a bit of horseracing, cucco catching (in which only Malon, Lullaby, and Sky participated), a small ocarina playing competition (with Wind conducting of course and Malon and Lullaby judging), and a footrace among the boys.
Everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves. These were just the kind of relaxing and fun activities that they all needed. Lullaby was sorry to leave at the end of the afternoon. They all gave her a hardy send-off when she mounted her horse and road off soon after dinner.
They wended their way back inside to prepare for bed. Talon had beaten them too it and was already snoring away in his room. Malon checked on him to make sure he was properly tucked in before attending to the boys. They were chatting quietly about how much fun they’d had and how long it’d been since they’d had such a peaceful, fun-filled day when Malon came in with her book. They quickly quieted and Malon read.
Once the boys were settled asleep or almost asleep in their beds, Malon went downstairs. Time was sitting reading a book. Malon settled beside him and pulled out her knitting. Slowly, as they sat there, Time shifted his position until his head was resting in Malon’s lap as she knit. He now had to hold his book up, but didn’t mind. They enjoyed the companionable silence.
Eventually Time sat up and stretched.
“I’m gonna head to bed,” he said and leaned over to give Malon a kiss on the cheek.
“I’ll be up in just a little bit. I wanna finish a few more rows of this,” she replied, returning his kiss on the cheek.
Time nodded and headed upstairs.
Just as Malon was finishing the last few stitches of her last row for the night, Twilight came downstairs. She looked up with some surprise.
“Why are you up, sweetheart? Is everything alright?” she asked in a motherly tone.
“Well, sorta. There’s been something I’ve been meaning to talk to you about and since I hadn’t been able to fall asleep, now seemed as good a time as any if you were still up,” Twilight explained a bit nervously.
Malon suspected this was the much hedged around topic that she had been waiting patiently to hear about. She nodded and motioned to him to sit down. Twilight took one of the chairs nearby and began his tale. Malon gasped when she heard about how hurt he’d been and shed a few tears hearing how the others had done all they could to get him back on his feet.
When Twilight’s tale was finished, Malon reached over and gently patted his hands which were clenched on his knees. “No wonder you looked so drained. I’m just so thankful you pulled through. You boys really go through a lot.”
“Yeah, I’m grateful for how much the others did for me. Traveler wore himself out and Champion gave me the pep-talk I needed to pull through. I’ll never forget that. Or all the support the others gave,” Twilight said, a slight hitch in his voice.
Malon nodded. “I’m glad you boys have each other through all this. I’d be worried sick if any one of you was out there alone facing these things. Not that I don’t worry, mind you, but it’s a might easier to bear.”
Twilight smiled at her. “It also helps to know we have a home to come back to where someone who cares about us is waiting,” he said softly.
Malon shed a few more tears, of happiness this time. She stood, went over, and hugged Twilight. He melted in her arms. It had been awhile and was sorely needed.
Malon laid a hand on his cheek. “Now you get on up to bed. You still need your rest,” she said, gently shooing him upstairs.
He laughed softly. “Yes, ma’am.”
Malon made sure Twilight was settled in bed before she went to her own room.
“That took longer than I was expecting,” Time said sleepily, having started to doze.
“Oh, that young rancher needed to talk for a bit,” Malon replied with a deceptive mildness as she readied herself for bed then climbed in beside Time.
“So he told you,” Time stated, a hint of trepidation in his voice.
“Yes, and I should feed you to the cuccos for letting him get so hurt. I warned you to take care of our boy,” Malon scolded Time, propped up on her elbow and wagging a finger at him. “But what you boys don’t go through. I swear I just want to ground all of you sometimes and make you stay right here where it’s safe. Not that that’s practical, but it gives me peace of mind to consider it,” she huffed, settling back down.
Time let out a nervous chuckle. “I don’t doubt you’d do just that if you could.” He gently pulled her into his arms, trying to soother her wrath.
Malon smiled and allowed him. “Well, since I won’t be keeping you here forever, no use staying upset with you. Let’s get our rest so that we can all have another good day tomorrow.”
Time nodded in agreement and they snuggled down to sleep.

Chapter Text
Time awoke early the next morning. The days on the farm had relaxed and rejuvenated him. However he still hadn’t risen as early as Malon. She had already left the bed and must’ve begun her chores. He smiled to himself, thinking about his wife. He decided he would take a leisurely shower before starting the day. The other boys could head out and start helping with the farm chores. He just wanted this morning to relax. He felt too good to start working again just yet.
He went down the hall to the bathroom. The closed doors of the other bedrooms indicated the others hadn’t awoken yet either. That was fine. If it got too late, Malon would rouse them all eventually… loudly of course.
Time stepped into the shower and began to whistle as he washed. It had been a long time since he’d felt this good, good enough to enjoy making music. His whistling soon turned to singing, and before long he was belting out one of his favorite songs, and didn’t care who heard him.
Hyrule thought he heard something and sleepily crawled out of bed. He then shuffled into the hallway, following the sound. When he reached the bathroom door, he paused. It took his sleep addled mind a few moments to process what he was hearing. Time was singing. He chuckled to himself. He’d never heard Time sing, or any of the others for that matter. Though how often did any of them have time for singing, or the heart for it. He sat himself down by the door and listened. Time didn’t sound too bad. Hyrule continued to listen then pulled his flute from his pocket and began to play along.
Sky mumbled in his sleep and rolled back and forth a couple of times. He was dreaming of flying with his Loftwing. But he kept hearing a whistle and was unable to discern whose call it was. It didn’t sound like Zelda’s or Groose’s or any of the others he knew for that matter. Also, it went on to long for a call to a Loftwing. Slowly Sky was pulled from the dream. He sat up in a daze and looked around. His mind began to piece together where he was, not Skyloft that was for sure. Then he remembered. And the whistling was still going on. He finally realized it was Hyrule’s flute and got up to see why he was playing. When he made his way to the hall, he finally heard the other sound, the sound of someone singing. He walked over to Hyrule and gave a questioning look. Hyrule indicated the bathroom with a slight tilt of his head but did not stop playing. Sky stood listening then a smile crept over his face. He sat down beside Hyrule and pulled out his harp, beginning to play as well.
The next to be awakened was Wind, the young conductor. His mind sharpened to the sound of the music faster than the previous two’s had and he hurried out to the hallway to see what was up. With a smiling look from Hyrule and a soft “Join us” from Sky, Wind pulled out his baton and began to conduct, not that the other two needed it, but it was part of the camaraderie fun.
Warriors and Legend appeared next. Legend let out a guffaw at hearing Time’s singing. Warriors gave him a nudge with his elbow, but couldn’t completely smother his own chuckling. With a motion from Wind’s baton, Warriors pulled out his ocarina and Legend, never one to be left out, pulled out his Conch Horn. The two joined the small band already playing.
If Time noticed any of this new instrumental accompaniment, he ignored it and continued to enjoy himself.
Malon came in the kitchen door from finishing some of her morning chores. She immediately heard the music, and with an exasperated sigh, went upstairs to find out what those silly boys were up to this time.
The sight that greeted her was nothing that she had expected. She couldn’t help smiling. But she stifled her giggles and put on a stern expression.
“And just what are you boys doin’?” she asked, fists settled on her hips.
Wind, Hyrule, Sky, Warriors, and Legend all immediately stopped playing. Wind glanced nervously over his shoulder and the others looked sheepishly up at Malon.
Just then Time emerged from the bathroom, looking refreshed and ready for the day. “Good morning, darling,” he said, still toweling his hair dry.
“Now don’t you distract me from finding out what these little gremlins were doing playing music out here in the hall,” she admonished, wagging a finger at Time.
Time looked around the towel and finally noted the others who were in the process of trying to sneak away. “Oh, I thought I heard some good accompaniment.” Time grinned boyishly.
Malon huffed and crossed her arms. “You boys.” She shook her head. “Go, get yourselves dressed. Breakfast will be read soon enough.”
“I’ll come help with that,” Time offered.
“Oh sure, and make quite a mess in the process. No thank you.” But Malon was smiling when she said it.
Wind, Warriors, Sky, Legend, and Hyrule scurried back to their rooms and quickly changed. Then they went downstairs to see if Malon would allow them to help with breakfast. The others were soon awake as well and making their way downstairs.
Another delicious breakfast was served, eaten, and cleaned up after. Then chores were once again handed out and promptly attended to.
While Time was out working in the field, he came across an old friend. “Hey there, baby!”
“Well hello there, Bonooru. Been awhile,” Time greeted, leaning on his spade. “How’s your brother Pierre?”
“Oh you know, still travelin’ around. Stops by now and then to hear the new tunes. So got any to share?” Bonooru asked, doing a little jig.
Time laughed. “Of course!” He pulled out his ocarina and played a few notes.
The scarecrow danced to the tune. Then he nodded, “Yes, yes, quite a good one, baby.”
“Hold on a minute. I’ll be right back.” Time dropped his spade and hurried off.
He returned a few minutes later with Legend, Wind, and Four.
“Here’s someone I want you to meet. Bonooru the Scarecrow. He’s a big fan of music. How about one of you play something for him?” Time suggested with a smirk.
“Ooh! I’ll go first!” Wind volunteered and conducted a brief tune on the winds.
Bonooru bounced back and forth in rhythm and then played the song back to Wind. “Yeah, yeah, that’s a good one, baby.”
“Wow!” Wind chuckled.
“Oh let me try this,” Legend said with a smirk, then played a tune on his conch horn.
Bonooru danced and repeated. “Another good one! Wowee!”
“My turn!” exclaimed Four. He trilled a quick tune on his ocarina.
Bonooru once again obliged by doing his part. “Oh yeah, baby! I like it.”
The four of them proceeded to take turns coming up with different tunes for Bonooru, some quite ridiculous. The time slipped by as they played. They were laughing and enjoying themselves when Malon came over.
“And what are you four doing?” she asked in a no-nonsense tone. “Are you goofing around because your chores are already finished?”
“I’m done!” Wind announced, raising his hand and bouncing on his toes.
The others didn’t answer as quickly and wouldn’t meet Malon’s gaze when she looked at them.
“Well in case the rest of you haven’t, I suggest you get to them,” she stated, giving each of them one last hard stare. She then went back to her own chores.
“Well, it seems we’ll have to share more songs with you another time, Bonooru,” Time said.
“No problem, baby! Anytime ya want to share with me. You guys play some great tunes,” Bonooru replied amicably.
Legend and Four left to get back to their chores. Wind followed Four to the forge. Time got back to his own work with Bonooru humming and dancing in his spot in the field nearby.
In the forge, Four had spent the past couple days making sure Malon’s horses were well shod, the farm tools were in good shape, and mending anything else that his smithing skills could mend. Now he had some time to work on the company’s gear. At the moment, he was working on Wild’s sword. It always seemed to need some work.
“How he does this to his weapons, I’ll never understand…” Four muttered to himself, hammering steadily on the heated blade.
“You know, it sounds kind of musical when you just sit and listen,” Wind commented from his seat on a nearby hay bale.
“Well you do want a steady rhythm as you work to help it turn out right,” Four responded thoughtfully.
Wind chuckled and pulled out his baton. He began conducting in time to Four’s hammer strokes. Four smiled and continued working.
Sky, who had been nearby finishing up with the cuccos, upon hearing the rhythmic hammering, came in to see how Four’s work was going.
Wind motioned with his baton for Sky to join them. Sky chuckled and sat down, pulling out his harp. He began to pluck a soft tune to accompany Four’s hammering.
Time, having finished in the field, was on his way to return his tools to their places when he ran into Warriors. The two walked back together and heard the music and hammer. They entered, smiles spreading across their faces. At a motion from Wind, they pulled out their ocarinas and joined the fun. The notes of the two ocarinas accentuating the hammer strokes.
At first Four had become a bit annoyed with the growing crowd and noise, sure that it would disturb his concentration. However, he soon found that the music seemed to be aiding him. He could feel the music wrapping around him and weaving itself with the rhythm of his hammer, each stroke becoming infused with some magic. He welcomed it and continued his work with clear purpose.
When Four finished, he held up the sword for the others to see. “Well I’m glad I was working on Champion’s sword. It seems to have received a magical boost from your music. So thank you. Hopefully this means it won’t break as easily as his other weapons.” He gave a half grin.
The others chuckled and nodded their agreement.
Time glanced outside. “Well, it seems we’ve all done good work for the morning. I’d say it’s time for lunch.”
More sounds of agreement were heard. They all proceeded back to the house together, meeting up with the rest along the way.
Malon was prepared when the hungry boys began to arrive for lunch. She had started a bit earlier than usual to get everything ready. Her hard work was rewarded with many compliments and no leftovers.
The boys helped clean up afterwards. Malon was also pleased to hear all the work was done for the day. This left some time for simply relaxing during the afternoon, a rare treat.
They each chose their own activities to pursue. Legend perused Malon’s bookshelves, choosing a book then a quiet corner to read in. Hyrule went out to visit the fairies again. Warriors decided to do some horseback riding. Wind and Four went to see if any Minish lived in the area. Wild went in the kitchen to do some leisurely cooking, mostly of desserts and sweets. Twilight decided to take a nap, Talon was already doing the same. Sky went to spend some more time with the cuccos, sitting with them, looking up at the sky, and playing his harp occasionally. Time and Malon settled at the dining room table and shared some tea and quiet talk.
It had turned out to be another good day. This peace was precious and they were all grateful for it. They had each learned on their journeys how to treasure such peaceful moments. And this time was especially meaningful. For a little while they could just enjoy a normal kind of life with the family they’d found. Even chores weren’t a burden when it was all of them working together like this. Malon’s praise of their efforts helped too.
Dinner was another wonderful success. The all ate heartily, talked, and laughed, sharing tales or jokes. Wild had outdone himself on the desserts, which were far too many for even the nine Links to eat them all. So they were stored away for the following day. Malon didn’t even bother trying to get up to do the dishes, the boys had gotten quite efficient at it. She suspected they were just eager for their bedtime ritual. She wasn’t complaining, it was nice not to wash and scrub once in awhile. She sipped her tea as she sat mulling over pleasant thoughts.
After all the clean up, they hurried upstairs to ready for bed. Malon found them all lounging about in each other’s beds, getting comfortable while waiting for her to arrive with the book. She had to admit it was an exciting book. She had to refrain from reading ahead after she finished reading to the boys each night. However, even though they were all on the edges of their seats when she started, they were often drifting off after a couple chapters. She could only smile at them laying sleepily in their beds. It filled her heart to have them all here and see them so relaxed and content.
Malon softly bade each of them good night then and went to her room. She and Time chatted for a bit as they settled in for sleep. She enjoyed having him home most of all. She hoped one day that he’d be able to stay for a nice stretch of several years. But she knew that couldn’t be rushed and she was willing to wait. He was worth all her patience.
Time may never have exactly said anything, but he knew it asked a lot of Malon at times when he had to leave on adventures. He knew she understood the reason and importance, but he still valued how patient, caring, and understanding she was about it. He thanked the goddesses each day for the woman he had been blessed with as his wife.
They were both happy and content when they snuggled together and finally drifted off to sleep.

Chapter 5: Dreams
Summary:
A couple of the boys have some bad dreams and Malon is there to help comfort them.
Chapter Text
We were walking along the beach once again, Marin and I. Evening was just coming on and the stars were beginning to wink on in the sky. It always puzzled me that none of the constellations were familiar. But I chose not to dwell on it, especially when I had her by my side.
“ Link, I really enjoy our walks together,” Marin commented as we walked hand-in-hand.
“I do too. This island can be so peaceful,” I replied, smiling softly at her .
“I’m sure your home has places just as peaceful,” she said confidently. “And you’re really going to take me there with you one day?” She couldn’t disguise her excitement.
“Of course. I made a promise after all.” I gave her a cocky grin. “ But are you sure you really want to leave this paradise?” I teased, making a sweeping gesture toward the rest of the island with my free hand.
“Oh, Link, yes!” she answered earnestly. “Really I could just hug you. It will be so wonderful to see other places. I always believed there was more out there across the sea .” She paused and gazed out over the darkening se a . “ It seems the Wind F ish has heard my prayers and will be granting me my wish,” she giggled, smiling up at me .
I couldn’t take my eyes off her when she got like that. She was so beautifully hopeful and eager for the wonders that lay ahead. I didn’t want to disappoint her. I had to figure out how to build a ship that we could use to sail to Hyrule.
“Oh when I get like this, I just feel like singing!” she exclaimed, clasping her hands together . “Will you accompany me with your ocarina?”
“Anytime you ask,” I replied with a smile, pulling out my ocarina and waving it slightly .
She nodded and began to sing her song. After a few notes, I joined in. The melody was haunting and touched my heart, as it always did.
Then suddenly everything went silent. I had closed my eyes as I played, but now they flew open. I looked around and saw that everything was beg i n ning to vanish.
“Link!” I heard her cry out.
I reached for her, but she, too, vanished before my eyes.
Legend sat bolt upright in bed. It was the middle of the night. As he slowly got his breathing under control and once again got his bearings, he muttered to himself, “Only a dream… always only a dream…” He rested his face in his hands and felt the dampness of tears, whether from his sleeping or waking, he didn’t know and didn’t care.
With a sigh, he quietly climbed out of bed and went downstairs. He looked around at the dark and peaceful house for a moment then slipped outside. He walked around the ranch slowly, taking in the peace of the place, trying to draw some of that peace into himself. He settled down on a rock and gazed up at the stars. He pulled his ocarina from his pocket and began to play. It was a familiar tune, one that had remained in his heart from the moment he’d heard it. It was her song, the one she’d taught him. He’d never forgotten it or her, just like he’d said.
“Perhaps one day…” he whispered, clutching his ocarina tightly to his heart.
Someone came up behind him. “Hope I’m not intruding,” came Malon’s gentle voice.
Legend was slightly startled. “No, not at all,” he quickly replied.
She settled on the ground beside him. “That was a lovely melody you were playing. What’s it called?” she inquired mildly.
Legend took a deep breath, as if to steady himself, before answering. “The Ballad of the Wind Fish.”
“I’ve never heard of such a song, not even my husband has mentioned anything by that name. Where did you learn it?” she asked, genuinely curious, her tone soft and gentle as she probed, hoping to get him to open up. She knew this one was often reticent about sharing his thoughts and feelings.
Legend got a far away look in his eyes as he lifted his gaze toward the sky. “From a girl on a small island very far away…” he answered softly.
Malon could tell from the tone in his voice that there was more to it than that, but didn’t want to press too hard. “Well it was beautiful. You play it well. I’m sure she must be proud of you.”
Legend looked startled once again. “Wh-what?”
“I only meant that the one who taught you must be very proud that you’ve learned to play it so well. A teacher is always happy to see their student excel,” Malon smiled reassuringly.
Legend nodded. “I hope so,” he whispered.
“Do you mind my asking her name?” Malon asked gently.
After a moment, Legend finally answered, “Marin…” He said no more and Malon accepted his silence.
Malon sat quietly with Legend for a bit longer then said, “Brrr, it’s a bit chilly out tonight.” She emphasized this by rubbing her arms as she stood. “How about we go back inside and I’ll heat up some milk to warm us and help us sleep?”
Legend nodded absently. “You go ahead. I’ll be there by the time it’s ready.” His gaze remained fixed on the stars.
Malon nodded and noted a tear glistening at the corner of his eye as she turned back toward the house. She made no comment and walked thoughtfully back. Once inside, she went to the kitchen to warm the milk, working quietly so as not to wake anyone else. She was just setting the mugs on the table when Legend silently came in the door.
He sat down at the table and Malon pushed a mug towards him.
“Thank you,” he said softly.
“You’re welcome. A nice warm mug of milk or cup of tea often works wonders for me when something’s bothering me. If you’d like to talk about it, I’m here to listen,” she gently offered as she sipped her milk.
Legend was silent a moment. “It was just a bad dream…” was all he would admit.
Malon’s gaze softened as she saw the pain etched in his features, but she wouldn’t press him. If he wanted to talk about it, he would, in his own time.
They sat in companionable silence as they drank their milk.
“Thanks again for the milk. I think I’ll be able to get back to sleep now,” Legend mumbled as he stood up then headed back to bed.
Malon was just tidying everything up, when another one of the boys appeared.
“Oh dear, I hope I didn’t wake you,” she apologized when she saw Sky.
“N-no, no. I… had a bad dream,” Sky said as he sat at he table.
Malon nodded and quickly moved to warm some more milk. She soon placed a mug in front of Sky and sat at the table with him. “Would you like to talk about it?” she prompted gently.
“It’s the same nightmare I’ve had on and off for quite some time. It’s about when Zelda… er, my Zelda from my era, not the Zelda you know, was taken from me...” Sky said and went on to describe the dream.
Zelda and I were flying together on our Loftwings as we often did, the blue sky all around us. Our birds called to one another. We chatted about the usual things of our lives; home, school, knighthood, and what we might do with our futures. Then suddenly a strong wind came up. Not anything like the kind of winds we were used to. There was something strange, almost evil, about this one. A funnel of darkness appeared, swirling before us. Our Loftwings struggled. Suddenly it pulled Zelda off her Loftwing and into its swirling depths, as if reaching out and grabbing her. Her Loftwing couldn’t reach her, could barely right itself and escape the storm. My Loftwing and I dove after her. He tried valiantly, but was no match for these malevolent winds. I fell from his back and dove for Zelda. My Loftwing cried out to me, but it was already faint behind me. I drew closer to her. I reached out my hand. She reached back. But before our fingers even touched, the winds flung us apart. There was a moment of darkness. When I could see my surroundings again, I found myself back on Skyloft, my Loftwing beside me. I looked around and called for her. There was no answer. I knew she was gone.
“I couldn’t reach her, couldn’t stop her from falling. Even though I did save her in the end, that moment of failure still comes back to haunt me,” Sky finished, hands clasping the warm mug tightly.
Malon nodded and reached over, laying a gently hand on his arm. “We all have moments of failure that linger in our minds and trouble us from time to time. And it sounds as if this is a hurdle you’ve already overcome. So perhaps it’s time to forgive yourself,” she said in a soothing and comforting tone.
Sky looked at her with a wide-eyed expression as if the idea hadn’t occurred to him before. “Forgive… Is that it… That simple…” he pondered softly.
Malon gave him a gentle smile. “Sometimes that’s all it is. We may not always realize when we haven’t forgiven ourselves. Did your Zelda ever blame you for it?”
“No, of course not!” Sky replied immediately.
Malon giggled softly and gave his arm a squeeze. “Then it seems to me, you have no reason to hold it against yourself. Things worked out in the end and all is well.”
Sky returned Malon’s smile. “You’re right.” He let out a deep sigh. “Perhaps I just needed to hear that. Thank you. And thank you for listening.”
“Of course. That’s what family is for,” she insisted.
“Family…” Sky whispered thoughtfully. “That’s still something I’m getting used to in some ways. It’s nice.” His smile brightened.
Malon pulled him into a hug and he gladly returned it. He wondered if this is what it was like having a mom. If it was, then moms were nice.
“Now you should get back to bed, young man. You need your sleep,” Malon said in a mock-serious tone.
Sky chuckled. “Yes, ma’am. Good night. And thank you again.” He rose and headed back to bed.
Malon smiled after him then made sure everything was cleaned up before she headed back to bed herself.
As she slipped into bed, Time rolled over and mumbled, “Where were you?” He slipped his arms around her waist, pulling her close.
She patted his hand. “Just had to take care of a couple of the boys,” she answered with a soft smile.
Time mumbled something unintelligible and fell back to sleep.
Malon smiled at her husband and closed her eyes, drifting back to sleep as well.
Chapter 6: Rain
Summary:
When it rains it pours. Chores still need to be done but there also will be time to send relaxing indoors.
Chapter Text
The next morning dawned with rain. They all knew they were due of course, having had several days of clear weather, but it didn’t make it any less disheartening to see. Also, they all suspected that they were going to get soaked trying to do the outdoor chores, which made them all a bit grumpy, aside from Talon who wasn’t bothered by it at all due to sleeping through it.
“Well, I guess we better get started. Doesn’t look like that rain will be letting up soon,” Malon stated, hands on hips.
Time put a hand on her shoulder. “You stay inside and make us some warm drinks. We’ll need them when we come back in.”
Malon nodded and hurried to the kitchen.
“Alright, boys, let’s go,” Time said with a sigh.
“Aye, aye!” Wind shouted enthusiastically and was about to run out the door.
Time grabbed the back of his shirt. “How about you stay inside and give Malon a hand?” he suggested.
Wind grinned and nodded, running off to the kitchen calling, “Malon, can I help with anything?”
Warriors chuckled. “Good call.”
“He’d be splashing in every puddle,” Time chuckled.
“And the rest of us won’t?” Four teased.
They all laughed as they headed out into the rain.
Malon had hot milk and tea ready when the others trooped back in from their first round of chores.
“Run and get some towels from upstairs,” Malon said to Wind when she saw how wet the others were.
Wind quickly ran off to comply.
As the boys shuffled in and sat at the table grabbing themselves hot drinks, Malon noted all the water that was being brought in with them. “Oh dear, there’s water getting everywhere,” she sighed.
She had just grabbed the mop when Wind, having returned and distributed towels, snatched it from her hand and said, “I’ve got this!” Then raced off and began mopping up all the puddles of water. He’d actually become quite skilled with a mop during his time on Tetra’s ship, having had to swab the deck so often.
The excess water was cleaned up in no time and Wind remained vigilant against the accumulation of water.
When the morning chores were finally done and soggy boots lined up by the door, they all sat gratefully down to the hot, delicious breakfast that Malon had prepared, with a bit of help from Wind. The good, warm food cheered them all somewhat, until thunder rumbled or lightning flashed, reminding them of the dreariness of the day and the chores that still lay ahead. However, Malon assured them they could wait awhile to see if the storm would subside a bit. They all welcomed this suggestion with great relief.
After breakfast, some ideas were thrown around on what to do while they waited for the rain to let up. No one idea was agreed upon, so they each went about their own activities. Legend picked up the book he’d started the day before and found a quiet corner to read in. Wind couldn’t sit still, so he helped Malon with some household chores. Sky sat and watched the rain. Wild, Hyrule, and Four gathered at the dining room table and discussed various aspects of weaponry. Twilight slipped out to the barn in wolf for to take a nap in the hay. And Time and Warriors took the time to start planning for when they’d have to eventually leave the ranch.
Unfortunately the rain didn’t stop or even slow down.
“Guess we’re just gonna have to face the rain,” Twilight commented, having returned from the barn.
“It would seem so,” Hyrule sighed.
“It can at least wait ‘til you’ve had your lunch. Come on, it’s almost ready,” Malon instructed, motioning them to the table where Wind was setting one last bowl of food.
Everyone gathered round the table and ate their fill. Having fortified their spirits with the hot meal, they once more braved the elements.
Malon and Wind once more picked up their duties inside. Malon kept the hot drinks coming and Wind kept the floor dry.
At one point Malon looked at the growing pile of wet towels and wondered, “Now where am I going to hang all of these?” She sighed. “I suppose I’ll make do somehow.”
When the chores were all finally done, Malon immediately shooed all the boys upstairs to get warm and dry. They needed little urging and went immediately upstairs.
Wind finished the final mopping and made sure all the excess water had been dumped from every boot before lining them up neatly.
“Here, let me help with that,” Wind called as he saw Malon hanging the wet towels.
They worked for a bit, then Malon paused. “I just don’t think there’s enough room,” she commented, crossing her arms over her chest thoughtfully.
“Oh I have an idea!” Wind ran up to his room and came back down with a length of rope. “We used to do something like this on Tetra’s ship,” he said as he began stringing the rope around making more space to hang things.
“Not bad. This will do nicely,” Malon praised him.
Wind beamed with pride and continued helping to hang towels.
“Will there be space for a few more things?” Warriors asked, coming down with a bundle of wet clothes.
“Absolutely!” Wind assured, snatching the clothes from Warriors and hanging them up.
The others followed soon after with their bundles of wet clothing which were immediately hung up.
The day remained dark and rainy. The storm didn’t abate even by bedtime and everyone was lulled to sleep by the sound of the falling rain.
The next day it was still raining, as a matter of fact it continued to rain for the next few days. Fortunately the system they had implemented seemed to be working well, so they made the best of things. With hot meals and drinks to bolster their spirits and temperatures between chores, everything got done. Although certain things couldn’t be done until the weather cleared, but that couldn’t be helped.
There was still plenty to do inside. With the rain continuing, it made it hard for things to dry properly, so Time, Legend, Hyrule, and Warriors helped dry things out with their fire magic. Though they had to be careful not to singe anything. A slight mishap with Warriors’s fire rod may have led to the untimely demise of a couple of Malon’s towels, but the others were kind enough not to tattle on him to Malon.
Malon took the time to spend some extra time with each of the boys.
She and Wild spent extra time in the kitchen together. Not only did they work together on making meals that would boosts everyone’s spirits during the rainy days, but they swapped recipes and just generally enjoyed each other’s company.
“This is one of my husband’s favorites,” Malon said, handing Wild a copy of the recipe.
Wild nodded, looked it over, then tucked it in his pouch.
When Malon sat down to work on her growing and often put off pile of mending, Twilight and Hyrule joined her. She showed them ways to improve their techniques and they helped her with the mending.
“And if you do it like this, the seam will be tight…” Malon was saying as she showed the two boys a seam she had just mended.
Hyrule and Twilight studied it appreciatively.
Sky was often sitting by the window watching the rain. At one point Malon came over and sat with him.
“It’s so different watching the rain fall here,” Sky sighed in fascinated contentment.
“How so?” Malon inquired.
“Well up in the sky, it doesn’t fall like this. It’s more like…” and he went on to describe to her what it was like to see and experience a storm in the sky and how fascinating it was to experience the difference here on the surface.
Malon smiled at his enthusiasm.
Twilight often took naps in the barn in wolf form. He enjoyed falling asleep to the sound of the rain drumming on the barn’s roof. When he would return to the house afterwards, Malon would great him with a warm hug. He liked that.
When Malon sat down to knit, Warriors joined her. It was something he had picked up at one point but didn’t often have time for. Malon gladly shared her yarn and needles. Warriors accepted gratefully and they often spent part of their rainy days knitting together.
“Oh, is that a new pattern? Looks different from what you started yesterday,” Malon once commented.
“Yes, it is.” Warriors replied.
“So what is this going to be?” she asked.
“You’ll see when it’s done,” he replied, hiding a small smile.
When he finished, it was a scarf like his own which he presented to Malon as gift for all her care and hospitality. She was quite touched.
Legend often kept to himself, reading books. But now and then when Malon joined him, he would talk with her about which of her books he’d been reading.
“I actually quite like how this one…” Legend was saying.
Malon nodded in agreement. “I also like…” and their small conversations would continue in a similar vein.
Malon enjoyed getting to connect with him a little.
Wind got restless being cooped up inside for so long. Time had to keep him from drawing on the sleeping Talon’s face, assuring Wind that it would upset Malon. Then after having explored the whole house from top to bottom at least twice, Malon had to keep finding new chores for him to help with. She appreciated his energy and enthusiasm, it was quite refreshing.
Malon and Four had time to sit and talk quietly of things. Four shared some stories of his grandfather who’d taught him his smithing craft. Malon marveled and appreciated, as well as thanked him for all the metalworking he’d done to mend things around the farm.
“It’s nice to have a home forge to work in again. I sometimes miss my grandfather’s,” Four said.
“That’s understandable. I’m glad I can oblige you with the use of ours,” Malon replied with a smile.
Time wasn’t lacking for his share of Malon’s attention. They found time to spend alone, either simply enjoying each other’s company or quietly discussing the ranch and plans for the future. It was just what they both needed during these rainy days.
This was how the rainy days came and went, filled with homey activities of life and family. Malon knew she would treasure this time she had had with each of them, just as they valued their time with her.
And then finally the rain did stop.
Chapter 7: Departure
Summary:
All good things must come to an end. The chain must return to their adventure.
Chapter Text
The morning dawned overcast but the rain had stopped during the night.
Time awoke with a heavy feeling upon him. When Malon rolled over and bid him good morning, he felt he should tell her what he was thinking.
“Malon, I have a feeling we’re going to have to get going soon. Today may be our last day here,” Time explained.
Malon was saddened by the news but understood. She gave a nod. “I understand. I’ll miss you, all of you. And I’ll pray to the goddesses to watch over you. I’m just so glad to have had all of you here for as long as I have,” she replied, giving him a hug.
Time hugged her tightly back.
They lingered a little extra in bed, just talking softly. When they began to hear the others waking up, they climbed out of bed and got ready for the day themselves.
The others had had a similar feeling to Time’s that it would soon be time to move on for now. So after a good breakfast, they spent the day doing all they could to leave the farm in the best shape they could for Malon. Fences were mended, leaks were patched, and any number of other small and large things. Their efforts did not go unnoticed by Malon.
“You boys don’t have to go to so much trouble, especially if you need to be preparin’ for another long journey,” she commented to them.
“Nonsense,” Warriors remarked, “it would be unseemly for us to do any less.”
The others nodded and murmured their agreement.
Malon was touched. “Well then thank you. I truly appreciate it.”
When they had finished around the farm, they set to packing their things. There were supplies to be gathered, personal items to be packed, and weapons and armor to be made ready to be equipped the next morning.
Malon helped them with gathering food and other provisions.
“You’re welcome to take all you need. There’s plenty,” she insisted.
“I’m surprised we haven’t eaten you out of house and home already,” Four laughed.
“One of the perks of having such a good farm, I can keep a very well stocked larder,” she responded, then added, “Besides, after your first visit, I made sure to be even more prepared should you all come again.” She smiled at each of them.
They each returned her smile. They appreciated knowing she’d been thinking of them. It made them even more glad that they’d been able to come for another visit.
After packing the food, they went upstairs to pack their things. As they each packed their clothes, they noticed where small holes or tattered edges had been mended. They knew it must have been Malon. There was something about seeing those stitches and patches that made them feel warm and loved. It was just one more token that they would take with them to sustain them on their journey.
They had everything in order before dinner and were able to relax and enjoy the meal.
“You know, I’m gonna miss havin’ you boys here to help with the washing up after meals,” Malon laughed.
“Well there won’t be nearly as many dirty dishes without us here,” Time pointed out with a smirk.
“True, but I’d take a mountain of dirty dishes any day to continue enjoying your company,” she replied with an affectionate smile.
They each murmured their regrets over having to leave.
Malon waved them off. “Don’t be. Just make sure to visit again as soon as you can.”
“To that, I think we can all heartily agree,” Time laughed.
There were nods of assent all around.
“Good.” Malon nodded with that decided.
The meal was finished, the dishes washed, and then it was time for bed.
Malon was able to finishing reading the book before the boys were nodding off. She tucked them in one last time and lingered for a moment, watching them sleep peacefully, before heading to bed herself.
Time was giving his things one last check when Malon came in.
“I wish you didn’t have to go, you know,” she said softly.
He moved over to her and enfolded her in his arms. “I know. Me too. And as much as I wish I could assure you we’ll be back soon, I can’t.”
“I know that too. Just do your best to stay safe,” she urged.
“We will,” Time promised.
“Good,” she replied in a decisive tone. “Now we both need our sleep, but you most of all. I’m sure it’s a long journey ahead of you.”
“It is, made all the longer knowing I’ll be way from you.” Time gently tilted Malon’s chin up and kissed her.
“It will just make your homecoming even sweeter,” she whispered with a soft smile.
Time nodded his agreement.
They readied themselves for bed then snuggled up together and slept.
The next morning dawned bright and clear, a good sign for the continuation of their journey. Malon would not hear of them leaving without a proper breakfast and they had no choice but to acquiesce. The meal was delicious and they were still offering their thanks as they shouldered their packs. She gave each of them a hug before they left the house.
Malon saw them to the gate of Lon Lon Ranch. She even managed to rouse Talon long enough to see them off. She waved and watched as they headed down the road. She couldn’t help smiling as Wind kept turning back and waving with both arms as he walked backwards.
Time turned back one last time and saw Malon still waving. He smiled and lifted his hand once more to wave a final time before they were out of sight.
“Back on the road again,” Warriors commented.
“Yes, and still a long one it seems,” Time replied.
“Well, my brothers, let’s make sure we get this old man home again by the end,” Warriors declared, resting a hand on Time’s shoulder. “Wouldn’t want to disappoint that lovely woman.”
The others cheered their agreement and this lightened the melancholy that had settled on them with their departure.
“Thank you,” Time whispered to Warriors.
Warriors nodded his acknowledgment.
And so the journey continued.
